The first leg of the "war on terror" was begun in Afghanistan.   That war is almost seven years old.  Osama has not been caught.  The Taliban is resurging.

One of the dead in the recent upsurge in violence is identified as Staff Sgt. Edgar A. Heredia, 28, of Houston.  He was assigned to 2nd Marine Special Operations Battalion, U.S. Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command.  SSgt Heredia was killed in an ambush in Farah province on May 26th, according to DefenseLink.

I have blogged my brains out since May of 2006 (not here until more recently)  on the medical treatment which our veterans deserve and do not receive.  My concern has been that our military and Veterans Affairs will again go into denial about the existence of PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder), about Gulf War syndrome, and other as-yet-unknown physical and mental disorders which will surface due to many being deployed once, twice, and three times to our two ongoing war zones.

Since that time, news has broken about the criminally bad conditions at Walter Reed (which was pressed into service at a time it had been slated to close).  On a more optimistic note, the "Fallen Heroes Fund" has opened its $50 million rehab facility in Texas (what a shame we taxpayers have not funded one or two in each state--the budget for two weeks of the war would pay for them!)

Now the question has hit home.  In the same ambush in which SSgt Heredia was killed, three or more Marines received traumatic injuries.  One of them is my cousin, who was hit from above by fire (the bullet traveled beneath his body armor and exited his lower back).  He (being a medic) continued to administer care to one in his unit who had sustained a leg injury.  As a Humvee approached them to carry them to safety, its driver stood up to spray ammo widely to shield the group from further gunfire.  That driver was shot in the head.  There may have been more injuries.  More details will emerge as the days go by.

All three of the injured Marines I have described are being cared for at Bethesda Naval.  All three appear to be making good progress, but we must not forget them or any of our injured and maimed....please.

I'm really sorry about what happened to your your brave cousin. May God bless him, and see him safely and successfully through to recovery.

Thank you for your kind words. He received his Purple Heart from the Prez himself. I am sure that would have been meaningful...if he had been conscious...well, we continue to wait and hope, not only for him, but for all in similar circumstances.

Hey Moogie, I am so sorry.
You’re right, we shouldn’t forget what so many brave men and women have sacrificed for all of us.
I hope that your cousin gets all the Medical attention he needs. Our troops deserve the best, anything but the absolute best Medical treatment, simply isn’t good enough.

Thanks Dasvics. I hope your husband won't be deployed. I know everyone wants to serve but these troops are really being strained past all endurance. It defies common sense. My cousin served two tours in Iraq, then was sent to Afghanistan. He wanted to go. He is a role model of strength, loyalty, and valor. That doesn't mean others don't deserve the same fine care that he is receiving around the clock. They all do. Everyone serves to the best of his or her ability.

Take care and lets hope we don't get into yet another war before the election.

I agree with you Moogie, everyone should have access to the best medical attention possible, but I would gladly give up my turn for any one of our troops. Because they endure what most of us don’t, and probably never will, they really deserve the best.

“He is a role model of strength, loyalty, and valor.”

Ditto. I’ve no doubts he is.
We’ll keep him in our prayers. I don’t often pray, but my son does at dinner, I’ll mention your cousin to him. (My kids are better people than I could ever be :-)

I’m not looking forward to my husband serving abroad. Trust me. I agree with JayNGram who said that we should be sending better trained troops, but if he has to go, he will. I just hope that he gets all the necessary training and equipment he needs to succeed.

dasvics,
Last July when my son was deployed he was sent to Mississipi to acclimate to the heat and for some training, then to somewhere in Maryland for unspecified training. (He couldn't tell me) After getting their shots they were allowed to come home for about 5 days. During that time, he never disclosed what the additional training was, but assured me that it was far superior to any training he received when he was in the regular Army. The only thing that bothered me was that when I told him that they should level any province in which the "innocents" wouldn't turn in the "bad guys", he told me "we're better than that". He's right, I'm wrong. But I couldn't be prouder. May the God Lord protect our brave protectors as they try to spread freedom and equality throughout this world.

There has Got to be a new law... anyone with Hate USA opinions on Afghanistan need to go there before yapping. When you see the GIRLS who go to school and the fear not in the air again for just walking outside or wanting an education. every US and Nato member that made that happen are heroes and have rewards from above that you cant even see now.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts. My cousin regained consciousness today and had visits from most of his immediate family. His questions were first about his buddies. He was told the truth. He is of course very sluggish and does not realize most of what has happened, and does not realize the passage of time since June 26th.

His buddy with the head wound is also gaining ground. The buddy with the leg wound is already on another floor and almost ready to start rehab. Everyone is amazed at the ground they have gained in the past couple of days.

Thank you for your thoughts and prayers.

your cousin as well as every man and women serving over in Iraq and around this globe deserves nothing but our undying gratitude..it sickens me that anyone talks against them when they are just doing the job they were asked of ...more then any of these cowards who sit and talk bad about situations they no nothing about ..it takes more guts to be a soldier than any other job ..they themselves might not like what they are doing but they do it sometimes under the worst situations and they do it because they are told to do it and they do it til they are told to stop..and they ask for nothing in return ..the least any of us can do is say thank you and we support you and you are always in our thoughts and prayers because they should be ..even if you don't like whats going on in the world today the only reason you can say so is because of the American fighting men and women ..GOD bless them all

craftyguy, thank you. Thank goodness I do not hear of people denigrating our military members in the ways that they did after Vietnam. Of course there are those special cases involving criminal conduct (or allegations of such) but those accusations are directed at individuals and not at the military as a whole. On the whole I think people are much more adult and knowledgeable about this war than about Viet Nam. That includes our service members.

I think that we (our society) ask questions much more responsibly now than it did during the Vietnam era. Then, it was all or nothing. Jane Fonda or the Green Berets. Now, its all us. They are all us. Our service members are fighting to protect all of us, on our good days, bad hair days, stupid days, and all the rest of the ingredients that make our chaotic American soup.

Al, you are the best.

Update: good progress continues, but sleep is now elusive for our cousin at Bethesda Naval. Moogie, who is "extended family" will be able to visit before long.

That is good news Moogie, thank God. We've been keeping him in our prayers. I don't know if you believe in that, but I hope you're not offended. We're hoping that your cousin makes a full recovery and please let him know that there are people who care and greatly value his service to our country. Thanks for the update Moogie. Take care.

Thanks dasvics and everyone. Sure I believe in prayer, and my cousin does, too.

Update--Post traumatic stress, disorientation. He does know he's at Bethesda, though. He doesn't know what happened.
