I haven't owed a car since 1990 when the fun Porsche 914 (that was purchased used from a little old lady who worked at the savings and loan and who only drove it to the beach) decided that air was not sufficient coolant and decided it never wanted to be driven again. I drive a company car when I have to, but soon I want to purchase a car.

My best friend has helped me along and even test drove some for me...here are (I think) my top candidates.  I seem to want a goofy looking semi-boxy hatchback, with AWD.  Pretend price is no object.

Here are my top contenders, in some kind of order.

VW R-32 (top reason, AWD)

Scion X-D (top reasons, reasonably priced and fuel-efficient)

Scion X-A (2006 model used) (drawback, weak engine)

VW GTI or Golf

Toyota Matrix (can't quite make myself like it)

Dodge Caliber (losing ground fast)

Jeep Compass

BMW 1 series (2009 debut)

Suburu sounds like an obvious choice, doesn't  it???  I will research those soon.

Does anyone have anything bad to say about any of these vehicles?

Car selling is such a racket !

Thanks !

hi moogie, i recommend a toyota rav4. if you must have 4wd, such is available. the 2000 rav4 is cute nice looking and you could probably find a low mileage one if you focus your search!

Go to Galpin Car Rental on Sepulveda Blvd., just north of Roscoe Blvd.

Ask for Jeff (Mgr). Ask him for the "Dimitri" discount, and test drive a Ford Focus for a weekend. I think you'll fall in love with it. If you like it, Ask Jeff how you can purchase one of their rentals at a tremendously low price, before the rental hits the used car lot.

Jeff can work a deal for you. Also, check out the other cars on the lot. Jeff will tell you, I've rented just about everything they've ever had on their lot.

Oh thank you all. I have just about decided on Jeep Compass, Limited, 4x4. I will get the "Jeep Green" color even though the auto magazines say it looks best in black. I think Jeeps should be green.

Moogie get a big car with all the luxury features loaded. Don't worry about gasoline. Just check out the link at my HHO blog and you will understand real fast that cars can be run off of water. I will be converting my old historical Lincoln Towncar to this with my mechanic and will update everyone once it gets done.

Honda has been known to be quite reliable; even their Ridgeline pickup truck, which is a unit body and box will be a great candidate, and you can even get a shell from camper shell dealers...I've seen some that look very sharp with the shells on them. Also, there is a trunk within the box, where the spare tire is stored; kind of like a station wagon. Honda also has the Pilot, the CRV, and the Element. Honda's luxury line Acura also has an SUV: the MDX. All of these are nice vehicles, from what I've seen at the 2008 car show in Anaheim last October.

Moogie,

I'm also searching for a car now...I had a 1978 Honda Accord Hatchback that my dad bought brand new, and I blew the engine. Ironically, it was 30 years ago this month when he bought the car from Hardin Honda in Anaheim. He still drives at the age of 92, and I'm looking at a Honda Fit, which is a 4 door hatchback, as a car for him. It gets around 30 miles to the gallon average with a 5 speed stick, and close to that with an automatic. It starts around $13,950 MSRP.

Yes, that (the Honda Fit) is a cute car. I saw one in traffic today. It is very highly rated by Consumer Reports.

The past couple of months, since I started this line of thinking, I have seen the traffic change from "mostly SUV's" to mostly small new cars. I saw several Yaris today. The metal looks very thin on those. One looked as if an elbow had already been used on it to shut the door. I have seen a lot of XA Scions which I assume parents are borrowing or buying from their kids, or maybe its just kids who are home for the summer. VW's seem to be gaining on the Japanese cars, and I saw some Aveos and some other little cars. I saw a Smart car too. That looked silly. I'm not knocking it though, I'm sure it will look normal as soon as all those Hummers and Landcruisers are off the road.

Good luck w/ the car search, mystere, I am now awaiting the 2009 models. No XD Scion for 2009? I'm kinda disappointed !

Moogie,

Are you still looking for a car? I'm having a good time with the Fit (got it on Friday the 13th). It's really roomy inside too...seats 4 without a problem, but may be tight with 5 adults. The back seat area is roomier than most compacts (even the bigger Honda Civic). It's also similar to the Scions.

Yes I am awaiting the 2009 models. The Fit is cute, several young ones at the swimming pool have those. Is the mileage great??

I was born on a Friday the 13th. I think it very unlucky to be superstitious.
