Yeah it's that time again! I've been sick since Saturday night, and feeling much healthier today. The best new years gift is Jillian's return to morning tv. I'm starting a list of the mistakes I made during the past year. It'll will take about a week to organize my thoughts. Watching ABC Good Morning America today. They have a video clip of a chimpanzee climbing a tree and grabbing a fruit which he then shares with a lady chimp he is courting. Followed by a guest--Author Anne Kreamer who spoke of surprising lessons after letting her hair go gray. She mentioned how male congressmen look age apropriate yet women in congress color their hair. in her book she writes of when she interviewed hairdressers at George's Four Seasons, one of the salons that cater to DC's broadcast-news personalities and politicians. "Most women," the owner's son and colleague, Sertac Ozturk, told me, "you can tell when they think they looked their best. It's usually their late thirties -- and nothing has changed for them since then, not their color, their cut, or their clothes." after I'd quit dyeing, when I felt my hair looked particularly hideous, I had lunch with a fiftysomething male friend whom I hadn't seen in some time -- and he told me that I looked like a movie star. he gave me a precious glimmer of hope to think that my gray hair could still be attractive to men, at least men of a certain age.

on Marthas Vineyard, she says, more of the women over fifty have gray hair than not. Even though the majority of the people on the island in August live elsewhere full-time, the overwhelm

overwhelming sense on the Vineyard is that fussing too strenuously with one's external, physical self is shallow, almost sinful.
Not long after the trip to Martha's Vineyard, I met Carmen Dell'Orefie. Carmen is today's only well-known white-haired model. She did her first cover shoot for Vogue in 1947 at age sixteen. She quit coloring her hair in 1973, at forty-two. Carmen seems to have wisdom. "It took me half my life to begin to know myself and the second half of my life to be true to what I know of myself -- which is that I'm authentically screwy." Carmen staggered me with her energy and joie de vivre. On the day we spoke, she wore jeans, a crisp white shirt, little makeup, and her white hair pulled back into a ponytail. Carmen became another talismanic ideal -- if only I could be half as self-aware as she at seventy-six, I would be a happy woman. Happy New Year.

Marv ! How great to hear from you--where have you been? I share the grey-hair philosophy. I got a few grey hairs a few years back, and a lot more in the past year, and I have earned every one of them ! I love grey on women and men. Feel better -- Happy New Year.

i am reading an interesting book about a woman named Nancy Lancaster. born in Virgina in the 1890s, her aunts married well and the family was of the upper crust. nancy married an englishman named Tree and for a period while in her twenties was living on manner houses in the fox hunting regions of england. while she was decorating one estate known as Kelmarsh, she favored no color or "elephant's breath". wanting to know what elephant's breath might be, i found a link to the Landscape Heritage Plan at UC Berkeley in a reference to the desired color of trash containers-- elephant's breath. http://www.cp.berkeley.edu/lhp/about/index.htmlIt would be interesting to learn more about this Landscape plan. Perhaps someone other than huell howser can investigate and can create a televisable program. yes that would be interesting.

Is that your wish for the new year, Al? Did you buy a motorbike yet?

Moogie! I was pondering whether I want to ride a motorcycle. I'll probably ponder until I die! yet I do not want to die on a motorcycle. Christopher Reeve probably would not have ridden a horse had he known where he'd end up. So you like the kawasaki 1000? I read about it in Popular Mechanics. It is a fine machine! I am surprised no one has responded with praise for the Honda motorcycles. Sure I would be interested in learning more about the Landscape heritage plan at UC Berkeley. I was listening to the Today show on Sunday morning. I am disappointed by the script-- which seems to use the standard way of phrasing sentences that maybe all NBC News groups use. It seems so familiar that it annoys me. I am certain I hear the same expressions too often for it to be anything other than repetitive dialogue. Anyone who knows the facts about news writing please respond. I'm also happy Jillian is on tv again.

Hi beepbeep! Happy New Year, all good things to you!

Yes, Al, that kawasaki is good looking, but how about that motoguzzi??? Who knew? I don't know if its the bike, or just the scenery. My sister is a honda partisan, but she doesn't blog (yet). I am also suprised at the lack of harley partisans. This week I heard of another bike, a Vegas. I haven't seen one.

The first three words were nice. I was going to say the rest sounds idiotic, but then I noticed your name.

By the way, Ramadan starts today.
