I talked to an interesting man yesterday. He worked for the IMF for years and he did studies which revealed some interesting things about the recent  illegal alien problem which started after the Reagan-era violence problems in Central America.  (Recent, because this is a little different than what has always happened with border crossings--this problem was implanted in middle America).

Lots of the (first wave) illegals from Central America were actually ex-USAID employees who had to get out of there -- we gave them refugee status and later citizenship.  Those are the ones who started the businesses (lawn care companies, maid services, construction contractors, etc) and then brought the 2nd generation of people from their hometowns to work in those businesses.  They housed them --- many to one apartment -- and kept them submerged in their own culture, not able to mix, assimilate, learn English, etc.  Many were seasonal workers but most seem to be here year round now.

The problems we have now are that so many other illegals have jumped on that same bandwagon.  Ten years ago the average American did not have landscapers, a maid service, or a subprime mortgage.   Speaking of which ...

He also says that the IMF will not listen to him regarding the serious nature of the mortgage scandal, which he predicts will be 1.5 times worse than the S&L scandal.  So there you have it, the two problems are closely aligned.

What is all boils down to is exploitation.  Everyone seems to want to emulate the rich without having the budget to do so.

And you know what? Those people who got mortgages that they couldn't afford are paying the price for it now. And let's hope that the government doesn't bail them out. You make a bad financial decision, you need to go down with it.

Your last sentence is true and powerful. Excellent post. I agree.
I believe that if I can't afford an English speaking, licensed, child care or landscaping professional, I don't get one! period.
And it's not just the average Joe that hires these people trying to emulate the rich. I know for a fact, it is the rich themselves, who mostly hire such people. They have the money to hire a professional, yet choose to save a few more bucks on cheap undocumented labor. strange.
I suppose they get some sort of feeling of worthiness, by "helping" their fellow man in need, by providing them with a job. Financial obligations? Could be yet another motive. No need to report all your employees or provide them with any health benefits..etc..
It's a disgusting cycle that has those hiring the illegal, feeling like they live in a win-win situation at our expense. All the while thinking they are some good Samaritans, simply "helping out". Exploitation is right.

Thanks you two. Ddain, I do not want anyone's unaffordable dream house to go to foreclosure. I have two female friends who have each "scaled down" in recent months, to get out from under the looming misfortune. Both state that they have never been happier, that they are no longer attached to "things." Both are nice people. I didn't think they were particularly attached to "things" to begin with. Some people are attached to their dream houses. I hope those people find ways to hang on. I do get your point--they were over-reaching. True.

Dasvics, you of course bring up a good point. There always have been many people who hire helpers at home legally, who do the proper tax work, and even make them feel a real part of the family. This happens in other cultures even more than here. Somehow, though, there are those in every culture who will cut corners to save an almighty dollar (or dinar, or peso). I think I am angier at employers (the middle men--the ones who operate the service industries) than I am at the idiotic subscribers. I receive brochures in my mail every week telling me that I have no time to keep my house clean and that, in any case, I am incompetent to do so. It is up to me not to be an idiot....it is not rocket science !

Oh ! If anyone wants insight into these artifically created service industries, a good read is "Nickle and Dimed" by Barbara Erhenreich. You will never hire a maid service if you read that book.

Everyone is so affraid of the liberal in control. We out number them. By we I mean "WE THE PEOPLE" have to stand and be heard. I hear more talking about there is nothing that we can do. Or that no one listens to me. The funny thing is that we are still talking about the imigration marches by Illeagal imigrants. You want to be heard. Somebody pick a date and a place and I'll be there with bells on. Freedom of speech goes both ways. I just ask that we keep the racist fanatic at the back of the march so as to keep down the bad publicity. But he is still welcome to march. We all have the right to stand up and be counted.

Exactly ddain, it may be a bitter pill but we have to swallow it. Also, I plan to buy a house for $0.50 thanks to the market being flooded by foreclosures.

I looked at the ads today and I did not see a single house for .50. I have a feeling it is going to be all the bankers and their kin who benefit.

So disappointing. I guess I'll go vacuum.

As many houses that are going into foreclosure, they're aren't going for bargain basement prices. There might be plenty of houses available, but the banks aren't giving them away.

humm....not yet... maybe we'll get lucky and eventually they might have to drop prices even lower. Hey, a girl can always hope.

Now, back to my housecleaning. I be so proud of meself. I was able to sweep AND mop! without an illegal alien's assistance! woo hoo! I'm a gonna go celebrate :-)

No matter what the future holds, I don't think we'll ever see home prices near the amounts that they were at 11 years ago before the boom here. Houses will continue to go for double or even triple the price that they would have been sold at in the mid 90's.

You're right. And there's nothing wrong with that. The house value should go up, not stay the same, and should never go down.
That would suck.

The way the value shot up like that, was weird. It never goes up that much, that fast. ???
