Music
The amazing music of Andrew Lloyd Webber. I hope the Idols are up for this! There's a LOT of emotion tied to his music. Genius. (I saw Katharine McPhee sitting behind him in the audience.)
Syesha Mercado is up first tonight. One Rock N Roll Too Many - Sultry and sassy. Good stage presence. I like it. Randy said this may surprise you but tonight, this is your element.. best performance to date right there. You could be a huge Broadway Star. Paula said she wasn't surprised because this is a big part of her love. You brought the house down right at the very beginning. Simon said.. Syesha, that was very sexy. One of your strongest performances so far. Lots of personality.
Jason Castro - Memory - This isn't working for me.. at all. Jason usually sings with emotion. He's pitchy.. BAD and doesn't "get it". This could even send him home.. yikes.. b4 Brooke even unless she's pitiful. Randy said vocally for him it was a little bit of a train wreck. Too big of a song. Paula said everyone's so used to hearing this song by a female balladeer. Sounds like a pop ballad. Simon said it felt to him like the longest 2 minutes of his life. Came over as a young guy forced by his mom and dad to sing a song he didn't want to sing. It's not your style of music. It was a struggle.
Brooke White - Where Do We Go From Here - I'm not liking this. I'm trying not to be biased but .. it's weak. This is torture for me. Lyrically challenged, too. Randy said for him this wasn't great. At least she listened to Andrew Lloyd Webber that you have to believe what you're singing.. Vocally, it was a little tough. Paula said you must never start and stop. You didn't overact. (What's Paula saying.. eyes glazing over) Simon said the trouble is.. it completely threw you... voice straining. This is a tricky one. You'll be very disappointed when you watch this back. (I would highly recommend she doesn't do this.) She's got those.. I'm about to cry eyes again.. gawd..
David Archuleta - Think of Me - (Phantom of the Opera) At first I was thinking of the show tune and how much I love it.. then I really loved David's version. Bravo, David. It could be a hit today! Nice.. very nice... Randy said you put your own personality into it.. dude.. it was the bomb.. This boy's the one to beat. Paula said it was absolutely perfect. Turned it into a pop ballad. Simon said he thought it was pleasant .. one of the weakest performance. (Oh, so wrong, Simon.. it WAS memorable)
Carly Smithson - Superstar - The energy suits Carly. She'll get another week. Randy said he doesn't know if it was her best performance.. but it was definitely good. The outfit was kinda fly. Paula said it too high of a range for her but loved what she did with the chorus. Simon said other than it got a little bit shouty in the middle, it was actually one of his best performances of the night.
David Cook - Music of the Night - Raw, sophisticated passion is what we're looking for. We're off to a good start. David has the sensitivity in his voice. Standing ovation even b4 he finishes the song. He achieved the goals that Andrew was looking for. Not thrilled with the ending.. should have kept it softer. Randy said dude that was an amazing vocal performance.. Molten hot. Paula said this song just proved more and more that you are so well rounded as a performer. It was fantastic. Simon said you made the most of the song.. Too rounded off.
Ok.. here's my bottom 3.. Jason Castro.. Brooke White and Carly Smithson. Running out of three to chose from soon. It's winding down.
I've wanted Brook to leave for so long, that I will have to chose her but it's really a toss up here between her and Jason.
What did you think? Who's going home tomorrow night?
