The remaining 7 take the stage. Mariah Carey is their mentor.. This is going to be tough.. She has a 5 octave range. She's sold over 160 million albums worldwide. More hits than Elvis. Can you imagine any Idol hopefuls trying to sing her songs? Here we go...
Up first is David Archuleta. When You Believe - He's off to a good start. He's feeling it. I like it. He can stay another week. Randy said he was a little worried tonight.. boys singing girl's songs. If you can sing.. you can sing anything.. he said YOU can sing anything.. That was the bomb. Paula said it must be great for Mariah to hear your interpretation of the song.. You made her proud. Simon said he has to agree.. he thought it was very very good.
Carly Smithson - Without You - Do I like her better tonight because the face on her arm isn't looking at me? That's ridiculous. I don't care for her interpretation so far. She's hitting the notes well. Kinda shouting but well dressed tonight.. yes, it's a singing competition. Bad ending.. Randy said he liked that she challenged herself with this song. Didn't hit the lower range.. it was pretty good. Paula said she liked that she showed some vocal restraint. Making it your own. Simon said he didn't think she pulled it off. He thinks she's over thinking it. It was an OK version.
Syesha Mercado - Vanishing - I like her range and clear crisp voice. She can stay next week. Very nice ending. Randy said you picked the toughest song of the night vocally. He was afraid of her song choice but said she did a good job. A couple pitchy moments but good job all things considered. Paula said this week she's been extremely smart for picking a song that not many people know. Unbelievably magical. Simon said technically it was very good indeed. He wasn't sure of her song choice.
Brooke White - Hero - First note is off. This is really bad.. pitchy plus! Sounds like she's never even heard of Mariah. It's going to be tough for the judges to say something nice .. hope they don't make her cry. It's not improving at all. Oh my ears.. Randy said the bridge threw him vocally. He appreciated the singer song writer look? Paula said every ounce of her is totally authentic to who you are.. identifiable?? Unplugged version is a very brave thing to do. Sounded really good.. exception .. a few off notes. (A LOT) Simon said it was a bit like ordering a hamburger and only getting the bun. The part in the middle was missing. Didn't think her voice was strong enough to carry that song. (No kidding) (Bye bye Brooke.. please)
Kristy Lee Cook - Forever - I'm surprised Mariah said a lot of people don't know that song.. I loved that one. I think I have the CD with that track. This is a first for me.. I think I'm liking Kristy's take. (I do like Mariah's better..without a doubt.. no steel guitar in hers) She's doing well with it. I'll applaud her tonight. Randy said a couple of pitchy notes. You definitely started stepping up toward the end. Paula said it wasn't just the end. Paula was blown away. She liked the arrangement. A hit in the country western world. Simon interrupts with she didn't give him chills. A little bit whiny at times. It wasn't great.
David Cook - Always Be My Baby - (cool, I always sing this to my younger child.. heh.. which annoys her) David is once again putting his own spin on it.. He's making it his own at the end.. Randy said you're ready to make an album.. hot recording artist. He gave him a standing O. Most brilliant performance. Paula said that song could be in a movie soundtrack right now. You're it. You've got the whole package. Simon said it was like coming out of karaoke hell into a breath of fresh air.. original, daring.. stood out by a mile. Great potential artist. Someone who takes risks.
Jason Castro - I Don't Wanna Cry - I can see how he can win the hearts of the young girls... but he's a little pitchy. Nice where he sings.. I don't wanna cry. Didn't like the rest of it. Ending was good. Randy said he didn't really love it. Felt like he was at a weird beach luau. Paula would love to be at that luau all night long. Simon is agreeing with Paula. Wasn't the best vocal of the night. A cool version.
Ok, so I still would like to see Brooke go home this week. I wouldn't be disappointed if it Kristy Lee or Jason were voted off.
Who do you think will leave us tomorrow?
See you then!
