Iraq party: Punish U.S. soldier who shot at Quran

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Iraq's most powerful Sunni Arab political party on Monday said a U.S. soldier's desecration of the Quran, the Muslim holy book, requires the "severest of punishments," not just an apology and a military reassignment.

Maj. Gen. Jeffery Hammond apologizes after a U.S. soldier admitted using the Quran for target practice.

The Iraqi Islamic Party, the movement of Iraqi Vice President Tariq al-Hashimi, condemned what it said was a "blatant assault on the sanctities of Muslims all over the world."

****************

I'm sure Muslims would love to do the punishment themselves.  It would probably be somwhere on the lines of picking out his eyes, or chopping off his head.  Sorry bozos, he's not Muslim, and he's not applicable to your barbaric Sharia Law.  In the end he shot a book.  I don't care that it was the 'holy' Quran, and frankly, neither does America when compared to what they want to do to him.  A loss in rank and reassignment is more than enough punishment according to the laws that he is applicable to.

It seems these people have a one track mind. Pay no attention to the opportunity they've all been given... to govern themselves.  No, they do not deserve to, nor are they capable to.  Turning them into a democracy is futile.  They need an Islamic state that is U.S. friendly, like Saudi or Jordan.  This is how they live.  We shouldn't try to modify that culture, no matter how insane it is.

I think the guy should be given a medal and sent home. This is the type of people who Obama wants to talk with and no pre-conditions.

You bring up a lot of valid points, MHP.

I hear many liberals calling for severe punishments for this soldier. He made an error in judgement, true, and he should be made to take responsibility for that error.

My recommendation would be no dessert tonight. I mean, the book calls for the murder of us all. How "holy" can it be?

I remember an "artist" who made a fountain once, it was an angel urinating on a Bible. Unless I'm mistaken, this "art" was publically funded (meaning the liberals made the US taxpayers, most of whom are Christian, pay for it). I am not at all surprised to hear the same group of liberals calling for the sniper's head.

You are spot-on with your asessment of the political future of the region, dude. The Arabs have been operating in a largely unchanged culture for 5,000 years. I think it is arrogance of the highest order to think that we can change their culture at all.

I liken it to Obama's arrogance, believing that HE can talk some sense into the terrorists, when three centuries' worth of statesmen and diplomats have failed.
B. Hussein must actually believe that he is Jesus Christ.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to pick up a quran on my way to the practice range. I'm also out of toilet paper, so I'll need another quran for that. I also need something to line the bottom of the birdcage...

Another PR problem for the military. No, this isn't a war on Islam. Or is it?

Politics aside...Just religious views..I wonder how the US would take it if the Iraqi soldiers were using the Bible for target practice? Yes you are correct in saying their ways are not our ways, but non-the-less..It is their religion, like it or not, believe it or not. That is that way it is.And when we are "occupying" an Islamic state, we still have to respect their ways, just as we expect them to respect our ways...We don't go into Saudi Arabia and target their religion..Why do it in another country..Target practice? C'mon...Weren't there any other more appropriate targets around like......Never mind. I won't go there..

Here ya go, LII. More FACTS for you, courtesy of the Quran:

"Muhammad is God's apostle. Those who follow him are ruthless to the unbelievers but merciful to one another." (Surah 48:29)

"Believers, take neither Jews nor Christians for your friends." (Surah 5:51)

"Believers, make war on the infidels who dwell around you. Deal firmly with them." (Surah 9:121)

"Prophet make war on the unbelievers and the hypocrites and deal rigorously with them. Hell shall be their home." (Surah 9:73)

"Fight against such as those to whom the Scriptures were given [Jews and Christians]...until they pay tribute out of hand and are utterly subdued." (Surah 9:27)

"...make war on the leaders of unbelief...Make war on them: God will chastise them at your hands and humble them. He will grant you victory over them..." (Surah 9:12)

"Seek out your enemies relentlessly." (Surah 4:103)

"Seek out your enemies relentlessley." I know Bush is trying to brainwash me into fearing these fanatics, but he didn't write the quran, did he?

Ask ANY practicing Muslim if he/she prays for the extermination of every non-Muslim on Earth.

If they tell you they don't, they're lying.

Their religious leaders spout more hate than Obama's lifelong spiritual advisors.

But that still does NOT give ANYONE the right to disrespect their book like that...I would hate WHOMEVER shot up the Bible...Is that saying I am wrong too?

HMMMM..I wonder if that is their attitude also??????

Of course they carry that attitude.

The difference is, in their culture, the hatred and murder of people that are different from you is encouraged, even preached in church.

In their culture, it is ok to dislike the people who want to kill you.

In ours, we are bullied into loving everybody. Kum-By-Yah.

I LOVE the Muslims. Now if you'll excuse me, my neice just turned 12 and we have to go to the church to cut off her clitoris, which is the Arab way. Yay, diversity!

Plus it would add a great new color to the night sky... I don't think he did anything wrong. Slightly childish maybe, but deserving of a loss in rank? Please! These are the same people who burn our flag on national tv every possible opportunity. Plus, as many have stated, it is a book condemning all non-muslims to death! If the bible said to kill all non-christians, I would see no problem with putting a few 7 mm rounds through it either. The excuse of "That's just their religion" doesn't cut it on this one. They want us to respect them, then how about doing something worth respect. Like getting their military capable of being responsible for it's own country.

GJ, that clitoris thing.... Almost died!

I think the punishment he got was just. Going any further would be wrong. What he did was wrong not because you or I don't put any stock into the Quran, but because what he did was symbolic and retroactive of what we're trying to do over there.

For one to get respect one has to earn it. Saddam had one item right that those people seem to understand. pure unadulterated force.
