Harsh Times

To Our Soldiers and Families

Today, President Bush announced his decision to return to twelve-month deployments in the CENTCOM theater for active Army units.  The President’s decision reflects the improved security situation in Iraq, one made possible by your unwavering commitment and willingness to sacrifice, as well as the recognition of the impact of extended deployments on Army Families and our readiness.  Today’s policy change will help reduce that strain as we continue to
grow the Army and restore balance.

The Army will reduce “Boots On the Ground” time to no more than twelve months for all active
component Soldiers deploying to the CENTCOM area of operations after 1 August 2008.  Soldiers deploying prior to 1 August will complete their scheduled deployments.

The return to twelve-month deployments does not change the Army’s dwell time policy.  This policy is intended to give units
time to properly reset and allow Soldiers, Families, and friends to reconnect.

You have chosen a most noble profession.  With your Families standing with you in support, you have borne the increased stress and burden of this war for our Army and our Nation.  A grateful Army and Nation thank you.

       Sincerely,

Kenneth O. Preston,

Sergeant Major of the Army

George W. Casey, Jr.,

General, United States Army,

Chief of Staff

Pete Geren,

Secretary of the Army

To our "Boots on the Ground":

To accurately express my gratitude for your sacrifice in words, I'm afraid, would be an exercise in futility. As a true patriot and one who is well versed in the history of our military especially since WW II, I can truely appreciate your sacrifice and that of the men and women who have served before you.

I had decided as early as junior high school to join the Marines and make them a 20-year career. Unfortunately, a fire-cracker and the liberal, traitorous, son-of-a-b*tch Jimmy Carter put an end to that goal promptly. I loathe that bastard to this day as he meets with our enemies.

Since then I have kept up hope that somehow, someday, I would be able to serve, to have the honor of wearing the uniform. My friends tell me I am a Marine at heart. Even some Marines I have met and engaged in conversation at the Applebees I frequent have paid me the same, most welcome compliment. And to this very day, given the opportunity, I would leave without hesitation, complete the required training, and honorably serve alongside any of you in Afganistan or Iraq. Well, at 47 years young, I think only the President could grant me that wish and the chances of that are slim and none.

So I guess I'll have to settle for the occassional meeting with one of you, the conversation and admiration over drinks and a meal, and the sincere hope that the next time a home-grown terrorist a$$hole decides to show his ugly face of evil, I'll be there.

Be careful guys. See you at Applebees!
