Relationships between politicians and their constituents are not entirely unlike romantic courtship; there are stages that need to be overcome before a successful union can emerge. First there’s euphoric infatuation, then comes the power struggle (as you’re confronted with the fact that another person’s values and ideals are seldom identical to your own), and finally, with the right amount of compromise and understanding, the stage is set for acceptance. With both lovers and politicians, that means initially oohing and ahhing at everything they do, and then, after a bit of time and examination, challenging them to a series of tests and ultimatums that will ultimately determine if the match is a viable one. If all goes well, the couple ultimately negotiates on what concessions will be made, and what needs to simply and tenderly be accepted.

Whether left, right, or center, we seem to be going through our rocky phase with both McCain and Obama these days. Each are getting pounced on, not just from their opponents, but among their own supporters.

In recent weeks, McCain has left many Republicans unsettled about his ideological bearings by toggling between reliably conservative issues like support for gun owners’ rights and an emphasis on centrist messages like his desire to tackle global warming and provide a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants. There are also those pointing to a character deficit, demonstrated by his allegedly "ruthless" dealings with his first wife, Carol, twenty-five years ago. (He was apparently dating Cindy McCain while still living with his first wife who became disabled in an accident, and even applied for a marriage license in preparation for his new wedding before his divorce had been finalized.) Once packaged as a selfless, courageous war hero with conservative ideals, McCain is now being accused of being selfish, immoral, calculating, and worst of all, improperly fit for his conservative suit.

Despite Obama’s exquisitely delivered messages and rock star status (he did beat the invincible Clinton and is planning to accept his party’s nomination in a 76,000 seat football stadium), he appears to be getting the brunt of it, charged by his disgruntled own of rushing to the center with such reckless abandon it’s enough to produce “whiplash,” doing a near about face when it comes to such issues as security wiretapping, gun control, the death penalty, campaign finance, and Iran and Iraq. In response, Obama just published an op-ed in the NY Times delineating his 2-year plan for troop withdrawals in Iraq, rebutting the notion that he has ever modified his position at all:

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/14/opinion/14obama.html
?_r=1&hp&oref=slogin

In the meantime, Newsweek reports Obama’s hurting -- losing some serious ground that’s brought his lead against McCain down to just 3 points (44-41), within the margin of error, and a far cry from the 15 point lead they’d attributed to the Chicago senator just 3 weeks ago.

So what are your gripes when it comes to this phase of the presidential mating game, and where do you think your heart and this election are ultimately headed?

ah, but the politician needs to seduce a majority of voters. an employee needs only to charm his boss. nevertheless, it's an at will relationship unless there is a marriage contract. governor gray davis' commitment to the people of californina was annulled. when my brother spoke to my father about his decision, my father responded by saying that is why they put erasers on pencils. who enters a love relationship with a contract of four years renewable for one additional four year span? i will ask my mom what she thinks. i'm certain she'd give me the right answer.

After the bashing that you just gave McCain, I'd say your statement that Obama "appears to be getting the brunt of it" is rather telling. Remember when reporters reported the news, and didn't interject their views into it? Obama based his whole candidacy on "cutting and running". But forgive me for stating the truth.

Sad isn't it that there really is a difference. People coming together try to make something of their lives in most cases. It's the whoring politician's who also wreck marriages, because the whoring politicians not only are many of them the worst scum on the planet ever, but they won't let people even survive anymore. I think there is my friend, a much greater distance then you propose in your posting, because unlike most people who are trying to make a decent existence, politician's are there to take it away and that is a great difference. They say "scum rises to the top" and so this is what we have. Perhaps you might be better comparing the politicians to garbage germs rather than couples. It's more scientifically accurate ;) !!!

It's no wonder why they call Presidential campaigns a political circus, isn't it? Leelila, you have brought us some very intelligent observations. Are you ready to see the "ringmaster" in action?

Hey, HappyG, lighten up. She reports the news and then she blogs. We are in the 21st century and I welcome blogging by those who know how to. This is great, as long as her reporting doesn't interject something that is one thing, like blogging is another. Because Rick Dickert surfs, does that mean he shouldn't be able to chomp on Mama's donuts in Van Nuys? Well in his case maybe it does do surfer boy in, but hey okay he flys in a chopper and he surfs...she reports and she blogs, ain't life grand?

esau -- love the comment about putting erasers on pencils. yes, i suppose almost all of these relationships stand to be renewed... or not.

happyg -- i'm sorry you perceived me as having given anyone a bashing. i actually wasn't offering up an opinion of any kind; just an observation. frankly, i'm one of those who would be happy to see either mccain or obama in the white house, and happen to think mccain is being unduly criticized for what happened with his first wife (after all, breakups are seldom very tidy, and it was almost thirty years ago). my only reason for stating that obama is getting the brunt is his slip in the polls.

sebar -- thanks for the defense, and the viewpoint. so i take it you believe the term "decent politician" to be a paradox?

mystere -- a circus is the appropriate word indeed... i'm ready!

This coming from a guy whom Leelila has considered "Mr. Right" for years...

It's hard to really say where I stand with either of the candidates at this time because of the flip-flopping. It wasn't that long ago when Barack Obama pledged to bring the soldiers home from Iraq when he was elected president. Now he's saying that he'll go with the word of the General who are there.

I think that's the biggest issue here...how can you pick a candidate when you really don't know where they stand, and when their views change when the wind does? I think you cast your vote with the guy who you think/hope will best represent what you think is what's best for the country.

Let me be really Jewish and answer a question with a question, because I know I'll get away with it... ;)

Do you take politician's as a Curry's Paradox, even though they are the most illogical group ever?

omg. So what? He fell in love with someone else HOW many years ago? Seriously, this is beyond lame.

Give me a break Leelila, its not like McCain refuses to pledge allegiance to this great country or deny criminals certain privileges, or supports the killing of almost fully developed babies, or leave them to die after surviving an abortion, or refuses to defend this great country from ruthless terrorists by trying to “negotiate” with them like Obama does.

geez. There are far more important issues to worry about you know.

McCain '08

I know this comment has nothing to do with this subject, but I love it!

PARIS - France has denied citizenship to a veiled Moroccan woman on the grounds that her "radical" practice of Islam is incompatible with basic French values such as equality of the sexes.

"She has adopted a radical practice of her religion, incompatible with essential values of the French community, particularly the principle of equality of the sexes," said a ruling by the Council of State handed down last month and sent to Reuters on Friday to confirm a report in Le Monde.
The woman's application for French nationality was rejected in 2005 on grounds of "insufficient assimilation". She appealed to the Council of State, which last month approved the rejection.

VIVA Le FRANCE!!!

Barack Obama spoke to the National Council of La Raza and in one sentence managed to do what most Hot Air readers would consider the impossible — he put distance between himself and John McCain on immigration. Calling the ICE terrorists, Obama made his position on border security and immigration enforcement plain. He thinks they’re fascist:

When communities are terrorized by ICE immigration raids, when nursing mothers are torn from their babies, when children come home from school to find their parents missing, when people are detained without access to legal counsel, when all that is happening, the system just isn’t working, and we need to change it.
So now the US government is a terrorist organization? Not only does this demonstrate his demagoguery on immigration, it also shows his cluelessness in the war on terrorists. If he can’t tell the difference between al-Qaeda and ICE, then not only should he not be President, but Illinois needs to answer for his selection as a Senator.

both candidates suck ..so whats the surprise ..once again Americans are force to choose between the lesser of two evils ..i cant stand either one ..but I'm going to have to vote for McCain because voting for Obama is like committing suicide ..4 more years of Bush sounds pretty good next to theses two buffoons..i for one am sick of this first African American crap ..who the hell cares??hes only half black anyway ..and I'm also tired of hearing about how McCain got shot down 40 years ago what the hell dose that have to do with our economy??this is the worst two candidates in the history of this country ..neither are believable between Obama's flip flopping being caught in lie after lie ..and McCain trying to read off a teleprompter sounding like a fifth grader doing a school play its annoying ..i wish they would hurry up and pick their vice presidential choices so it will draw attention away from those two idiots..thank God this isnt a marraige it would end in a divocre and no judge wouldnt be on my side..unless he was apointed by one of these two

I remember a history teacher once saying that both parties change there positions so much that they are exactly opposite of where they were 40 years ago.

Mc Cain won my heart with the torture thing. Obama lost me on the Planned Parenthood thing. What to do what to do as they both move more toward the center?

Well... I'm black so if they're going to be twins then I'll do what I do when I play roulette. After all... when it get's right down to it I think that Republicans and Democrates all look alike. Democrates like to use bombs and missles and Republicans like to put boots on the ground... which makes more sense to me but what the hey... eight years of "Oops! Sorry China was that your embassy?"

Anywho... I'm not afraid of Senator Obama being elected President but I would prefer Senator Mc Cain. Something about being a veteran makes me prefer a veteran as in the Army I found that we we're all green. Lite green to the front... dark green to the rear.

This is a sad commentary on our times. If you dare speak against Obama you are considered a racist. On the other hand being a conservative I feel left out totally as I have no favorite son in the game. I will use the value system to choose my candidate and stick with experience over youth. I've seen to many decades of war and terror to take chances with my countries future. McCain 08...

“Sen. Obama said this morning that he wants a foreign policy that is tough, smart and principled,” said Lieberman. “This afternoon I want to ask my colleague who I respect and like a couple of direct questions: Was it tough when Sen. Obama voted to order U.S. troops to retreat from Iraq on a fixed timeline regardless of the recommendations of our military commanders or conditions on the ground? Was it smart when Sen. Obama opposed the surge and predicted that it would fail to improve our security? … Was it tough and principled when Sen. Obama said he would be open to changing his plan on Iraq after going there and talking to General Petraeus, which I think was the right position, only to change that position hours later after being heatedly criticized by organizations like MoveOn.org? I say respectfully the answer to all those questions is, no.”

McCains achilles heal within his own base is the Illegals in the country. He should stay as far awway from them as possible, rethink his position on amnesty and join the majority of Americans. I think the Senate is too far removed from the real world to understand our feelings toward amnesty maybe they need to spend more time in our world and less time in Washington's fantasy land. If we can't enforce our laws with the Border Patrol we need to fortify that strip of land. I can hear the shouts of racist already but forget it, I work with and are friends with many legal Mexicans and many of them agree.
