LIARS' ROUND-UP

ON SECURITY, FACTS MATTER

By Ralph Peters

THE facts about your security are being torn to shreds by activist liars. And they think that you're too stupid to know the difference.

Let's lay out the worst current examples of media make-believe and election-year truth-trashing:

Whopper No. 1: America is less safe today than it was on Sept. 10, 2001. Oh, really? Where's the evidence? The Clinton years saw New York City attacked and Americans slaughtered by terrorists around the globe. Nothing was done to protect us.

And the true end of the Clinton era came on 9/11.

A record to be proud of.

Countless aspects of the Bush-Cheney administration deserve merciless criticism. But fair is fair: Since 9/11, we haven't suffered a single successful terrorist attack on our homeland. Not one.

Explain to me, please, how this shows we're less safe. What factual measurement applies, other than the absence of attacks?

God knows, the terrorists desperately wanted to strike our homeland. And they couldn't. Are we supposed to believe that was an accident?

Whopper No. 2: Al Qaeda is stronger than ever. Al Qaeda just suffered a strategic defeat in Iraq that may prove decisive. It can't launch attacks beyond its regional lairs. The cowardly Osama bin Laden can't show his face (remember his Clinton-era pep rallies?).

Yes, terrorists can still murder innocents on their home court. I personally prefer that to them killing Americans in Manhattan and Washington. Even in Iraq, al Qaeda's been beaten down to violent-fugitive status.

By what objective measurement is al Qaeda stronger today than it was when it had an entire country for its base and its tentacles reached all the way to Florida and the Midwest?

Whopper No. 3: Success in Iraq is an illusion - the surge failed. Folks, this is something only a New York Times columnist could believe.

Every single significant indicator, from Iraqi government progress through the performance of Iraqi security forces to the plummeting level of violence, has changed for the better - remarkably so.

If current trend-lines continue, it may not be long before Baghdad is safer for Iraqi citizens than the Washington-Baltimore metroplex is for US citizens. Iraq's government is working, its economy is booming - and its military has driven the concentrations of terrorists and militia from every one of Iraq's major cities.

And our troops are coming home. Where's the failure?

Whopper No. 4: Iran is stronger than ever. Tell that to the Iraqis, who've rejected Iranian meddling in their affairs, who've smashed the Iran-backed Shia militias and who didn't take long to figure out that Tehran's foreign policy was imperialist and anti-Arab.

The people of Iraq don't intend to trade Saddam for Ahmadinejad. Iran has lost in Iraq. At this point, all the Iranians can do is to kill a handful of innocent Iraqis now and then. Think that wins them friends and influence?

Whopper No. 5: The US-European relationship is a disaster. In fact, Washington and the major European capitals have built new, sturdier bridges to replace old ones that badly needed burning.

The Europeans grudgingly figured out that they need us - as we need them. The big break in 2003 cleared a lot of bad air (there was no break with Europe's young democracies). Relations today are sounder than they were in the fiddle-while-Rome-burns Clinton era.

Oh, and NATO has become a serious military alliance - fighting in Afghanistan, patrolling the high seas and conducting special operations against terrorists. The Germans announced this week that they're sending another thousand troops to Afghanistan. France is re-engaging with NATO's military side. Where's the disaster, mon ami?

Whopper No. 6: As president, Barack Obama would bring positive change to our foreign policy - and John McCain's too old to get it.

Hmm: Take a gander at Obama's senior foreign-policy advisers: Madeleine Albright (71), Warren Christopher (82), Anthony Lake (69), Lee Hamilton (77), Richard Clarke (57) . . .

If you added up their ages and fed the number into a time-machine, you'd land in Europe in the middle of the Black Death.

More important: These are the people whose watch saw the first attack on the World Trade Center, Mogadishu, Rwanda, the Srebrenica massacre, a pass for the Russians on Chechnya, the Khobar Towers bombing, the attacks on our embassies in Africa, the near-sinking of the USS Cole - oh, and the US bombing of the Chinese embassy in Belgrade.

Their legacy climaxed on 9/11.

You couldn't assemble a team in Washington with more strategic failures to its credit.

Whopper No. 7: Our troops are all coming home as psychos victimized by their participation in military atrocities.

Tell it to the Marines.

"Tell it to the Marines" Comes from a speech given by Franklin D Roosevelt. In this Speach he tore into all the people that were bad-mouthing our WWII efforts.

It became common to say "Tell it to the Marines" when you were telling someone they were full of Shi* on a statement or viewpoint of their's and added an implication that they were too cowardly to "Tell it to the Marines".

Every Generation has sayings that seem to make no sense to those not of that Generation. The best I can come to explaining it is that NO ONE would dare tell a Marine of that time such crap. Kinda like it it is today. You see people talking bad but you never see one of these idiots take a swing at a Marine or really go out of their way to anger one.

Used in this post "Tell it to the Marines" mean that the statement above it is trash

Great post LQQKING ! The Marines also have to deploy in all sorts of places worldwide, because the " Peace In Our Time " crowd haven't learned a single thing. However this misguided and ignorant of fact approach would mostly likely have ended long ago, if all the politicians had to hit the beaches and deploy first. I believe most of them and their opinions would meet their end on " someone " elses bayonet !

Statement 1: The independent study found both the Clinton Administration and the Bush Administration at fault for 9-11. The intelligence was there about what was happening prior to 9-11 and neither administration acted on it. Records show that the military under the Clinton administration attacked terrorist camps frequently as to the fervor compared to the day. Well it's just ignorant and asinine to compare the two era's or lay blame at anyones feat. This was an American tragedy where all of America's Politicians were should be held responsible! People had been citing it was going to happen for YEARS and neither party acted on any solutions.

Statement 2: Al-qaeda may be weaker in Europe and America but they are still very strong in the middle east and growing at an alarming rate in Asia. The growth of Al-qaeda in countries where it had no inroads before 2003 has been linked to anti-american sentiment fermented by the Bush administration. Also, no one in the intelligence community would ever dream of not considering Al-qaeda a threat to the mainland states. In fact most are just holding their breath for another attack. As for this guy being happy that any innocent dies, well this begs the question as to his character.

Statement 3: Uhmm... He would feel safer in Baghdad than Washington-Baltimore Metroplex because of the Surge? Hey knock yourself out, I hope the New York Post plans this guys vacation to Baghdad and he can take some nice leisurely walks outside the Green Zone. Other than that statement, I was going to agree the surge did work and did receive undue critic

and did receive undue criticism.

Statement 4: I would have to agree that Iran is not as strong as it once was but it is still a major threat. It has made strong inroads into Iraq and Afghanistan in recent months and continues to do so. To be so naive as to think that simple bigotry will influence the role Iran plays in Iraq is the art of ignoring the geo-political process of the region.

Statement 5: What news is this guy listening too? We are at an all time low popularity wise, the lowest since the Nixon era. If you think because they are coalescing with us in regards to sending troops to Afghanistan then let me remind you, thats a NATO operation, not an American one. They are simply doing their part to fulfill their obligation's to America, please don't read to much into that. It has nothing to do with our friendship at all. Though I will add most Europeans like Americans, they dislike American Political policy.

Statement 6: These all happened in areas where Human Intelligence was sketchy and political influence from both sides kept us from acting. Yet because it was political deficient to act, it is put on the Clinton Administration. We also saw the softening of Libya the liberation of Sarajevo and a lot of other actions unstated here.

Statement 7: I think this reiterates how out of touch this guy is with reality. I know what the statement means but after researching this issue for a blog I can tell you it's a valid concern. Both the

...Both the Army and Marine Corp. are dishonorably discharging service men and women who step up for help dealing with Post Traumatic Stress disorder. It's so bad that an internal probe was started to see just how deep this epidemic went. That all the troops are being traumatized, well that's sketchy at best.

O.k., someone please take off this guy's rose colored glasses. I'm not going to say that the Clinton Administration did was done due to both public and political pressure. The actions we are taking today would have never been deemed acceptable by the public prior to 9-11. If anything that horrible tragedy opened some peoples eyes. This guy obviously wasn't one of them though.

Correction last paragraph....

I'm not going to say that the Clinton Administration did everything right, but a lot of what was done was due to both public and political pressure.

I'm a pretty normal guy. A conservative and a bit old fashioned. Ready to change my mind if presented with verifiable facts to justify doing so...............A U.S. Navy veteran of the Viet Nam Era ( No In-Country Service ) I find my mind tends toward practical Solutions. My reason for posting is to call attention to the things I think are important.I normally read between 7-9 news sources a day so I rarely will compose my own items preferring to take advantage of the enormous availability of public sources. If you do not care to read the LOOOOOOONG Posts then by all means don't do so . There's not much annoys me as much as an unsubstantiated accusation or an unverified claim.............. If your only argument consists of a pocket full of I wishes and a basket full of it ought to be's or If your strategy is to change the subject or make personal attacks because of your inability to argue the merits. Please do everyone a favor and sit down and shut up, or post to the entertainment blog where such tactics belong...................
...............I would urge you to remember that The politicians work for you......................
..... I believe that the campaign contribution system is nothing less then Legalized Bribery. It is after all, An elected Official accepting Cash from a citizen (although I must concede that every one of the politicians will swear to you that people do it expecting no payback. wink, wink, nod, nod) Good Governance from our employees will only be achieved when Politicians fear for their continued employment more than they lust after Campaign Contributions
