For those of you who frequent community pools....do you check to see how often and how well it's cleaned?

Got any good stories?

I used to do pool service on commercial pools, never, ever get into a commercial pool or spa that smells like chlorine, that smell isn't chlorine, trust me.

A clean pool should be clear and have a sparkle to it, if you can't see the bottom because it is cloudy or has a green cast it may not have any sanitizer in it and is not safe.

A clean pool is all about the chemical balance, not the debris.

That chlorine smell? Are the Chloramines

Chlorine can combine with ammonia and nitrogen compounds in the water to form chloramines, sometimes called combined chlorine. By combining with ammonia and nitrogen, free chlorine in the water is disabled. Chloramines are 60 to 80 times less effective than free chlorine. Chloramines are formed any time ammonia and nitrogen are in the water. Some of the ammonia and nitrogen compounds are introduced into the water by swimmers and bathers in the form of perspiration, urine, saliva, sputum, fecal matter and other bodily fluids. An active swimmer sweats one pint per hour, while the average person sweats three pints per hour in a heated spa.

Chloramines smell bad. This is the smell most often associated with pools and spas in health clubs and YMCAs. Chloramines are eye and skin irritants, and they cloud the water.

Not to mention putting your health at risk if the chemicals are not properly maintained.

So.... The next time you think about getting into the spa at your health and fitness club, remember that little tidbit above!

Is there really a dye that could be put in a pool so when someone pees, the pee will change color????

I go to neighborhood pools and leave chewed up Baby Ruth bars in the pool. Then I go complain about it. What can I say.....I have a lot of time on my hands!

No Sig, that is a myth told to children to keep them from eliminating in the pool! You would not believe how many people call looking for that chemical! =)

Mom and dad used to have a sign in the planter next to the pool that said "Welcome to our ool, notice there is no 'P' in it, please keep it that way"

And no, don't drink the water! Yech! LOL! By the way after I did service for about six months and became a certified pool operator and then moved into the construction phase of the business. I now do something that it totally unrelated!

I'm a reporter for FOX 35 News. I moved here January 2006 from cold Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It's been an exciting new adventure. I still feel as if every weekend is a vacation. Beaches, theme parks, pools. It's all new to me. When friends from up north make wise cracks about the hurricanes I remind them of the 20 below temperatures they have to endure every winter. It's so cold reporters have to use markers instead of ballpoint pens when covering an outdoor story because the ink freezes. Ha. I'm happy to be here and excited to cover the news that matters most to you.
