I went to an Orlando pawn shop this afternoon and found a woman who was pawning a family heirloom (a necklace her mother had given her) just so she could have some cash to go grocery shopping. This is a working woman who's kids are both in daycare while she works retail. She says she used to be able to make ends meet, but with increasing gas prices and food, she's strapped.

She's not alone. The pawn shop owner told me he hears stories like this daily. Even more so now, from middle class working people.

Have any of you had to go this far just to make ends meet?

Too many what if's, what if they have a gas guzzler? what if they are living way above their means and dont want to trim the fat? what if they have an addiction and dont want to give it up? Hmmmm questions to ponder..

darn it signal .. you beat me LOL.

I am sick to death of the "braodcasting" of the new impoverished middle class. They are simply living beyond their means!!

Kill the cell phones ...
Sell that gas guzzler ...
Drop the satellite TV / cable ...
Mow your OWN lawns ...
Clean your own pool ...
etc etc etc

Bring back Wednesday spaghetti night only make it Thur / Fri too!! ...

And spend time with your spawn ... that's always free and its really all they ever wanted anyways .. not that XBOX 360 and all the games ... they want your time!!!

Kelly, what were you pawning? If you are strapped for cash I am sure you can get a parttime job somewhere LOL

I cannot see anyone selling heirlooms. OMG. i wouldn't even dream of it. I'd find another way to make ends meet. Marry a rich guy? Okay, maybe not....I agree with bchans

I was given jewelry appraised at over two hundred dollars by my family and even if I were in the streets, I would never pawn it. My mother already had to sell her personal coin collection for less than what it was worth and I am not going to resort to that.

Kelly been there done that. I am presently trying to recoup my parent's jewelry..and I must say..these people (owners of pawn shop that I have been dealing with HAVE BEEN ABSOLUTELY GREAT) Thank God there are still good business people one can work with. It was not easy to give up the jewelry..but one must do what's necessary to put food on your table. This coming from someone that can't get any other help because according to calculations we make too much money. I wish people would know how truly hard it is to live in today's world and along with trying to raise two children and a sick husband. NOT EASY AT ALL. Like I always say when one has faith..this too shall pass. I know find life is getting smoother around the edges..LOL You gotta laugh a little...don't worry be happy

and for those that continue to ADAMANTLY say people living above their MEANS.......#$% Dam it...that's not always the case...what about loss of employment; death; sickness..and not too mention THE SHYSTERS AND THE PIECES OF SHEIT APPRAISER that lie and worked together to make this housing economic A NIGHTMARE...please just because some of you have lived here all your lives and have been in your own homes for years and you weren't involved in the heist of 2005..stop being so judgmental......and know that your ignoring people's explanation and bashing is not the way to go. Someday, may God take care of you, and you don't lose a love one; you don't lose your jobs and find your lives just slipping away...it is not a pretty picture and I am trying to hold on with every bit of might I have and God's will...

Its like the statement that school board member said, give up the smokes (its healthier), give up the booze ( its healthier too) are all the hbo, cinimax channels really needed, does the kids really need X-Box or ps3, no not really. Reading is better for them or quality family time. There are many ways to get the extra money needed other than family heirlooms.

Well I think everyone is being a bit presumptuous that this lady drinks and smokes. I would say cutting back on the non essentials is the first key for sure.

The best ways are these. Don't eat out, on average this can save you upwards of $50.00 a month (seriously add it up!) Don't have two phones (I.E. Cell and Home Phone) this can save you from $40.00 to $80.00 a month. Cable TV is a luxury and can save you $50.00 to $150.00 a month! Car Pool with others from work and share the gas bill (This can vary but you'll cut your gas expenses for just commuting by at least half!) Last thing is go generic on products you can save 15 to 30% monthly on your grocery bill and hygiene products! There are a lot of other things people can do.

People should really be adding constructive things and realizing that if this women is in retail with 2 kids, she probably isn't paying to have her lawn mowed or pool cleaned. If she is then she's working in one very generous store. I worked as a regional manager for a couple stores and the average wage is $7.50 an hour. Yah... Imagine 40 hours a week on that salary.

Sageman I wasnt being presumptuous on that, it was only an example. However your ideas are very valid ones too. There are many ways to save money. The outrages electric bills for example, dont use the stove, bbq your dinner on a grill. Turn your water heater down to a lower temp. Line dry some of your cloths instead of a drier.
I started to shop for food again at Winn Dixie, they have a lot of buy one get one free deals.
It takes some thinking to find was to save or make extra money, but to sell something of value like a heirloom should only be a last resort if really necessary.

I'm with Candy, I've been there and done that, and it has never been because I am either LAZY or LIVING BEYOND MY MEANS. I have never been one to have an abundance of anything and we didn't own a tv for two years, and when my little girl was little we had what we needed but it was not without this mother's sacrifice. Country Folk are very proud and at times when I needed help no one knew. Yes, I have not only pawned things that were precious to me that I could never afford to buy back but I have lost everything I owned twice because I could not afford storage when I moved to a small place I could afford (becuase we could meet our NEEDS better) and sometimes I am saddened at all I have lost. But material things will never make your life perfect and now I have learned to be THANKFUL for things I could sell when I needed money to get me through another week.
I worked less than 16 hours a week and my husband's lawn care compnay slowed down to a crawl and then in Nov left him unemployed. He just found work a few weeks ago. He took on odd jobs just to keep a roof over our head, and I am proud that he was trying.

I'm a reporter for FOX 35 News. I moved here January 2006 from cold Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It's been an exciting new adventure. I still feel as if every weekend is a vacation. Beaches, theme parks, pools. It's all new to me. When friends from up north make wise cracks about the hurricanes I remind them of the 20 below temperatures they have to endure every winter. It's so cold reporters have to use markers instead of ballpoint pens when covering an outdoor story because the ink freezes. Ha. I'm happy to be here and excited to cover the news that matters most to you.
