Hi Everyone,

So as I was driving into work today I heard on the radio a clip from Ellen's Degeneres' show, where she talked about the nightmare that she is living. It turns out that Ellen and her girlfriend, Portia de Rossi, adopted Iggy (a Brussels Griffon mix) from Mutts and Moms, a dog adoption agency here in Los Angeles. But things didn't work out as Ellen planned -- her cats didn't get along with Iggy -- so she gave the pooch to her hairdresser, who has two kids, including 12-year-old Ruby.

The kids fell in love with their new little friend. They provided a loving home for a little guy who otherwise would have ended up back in the adoption agency. But things changed dramatically for Iggy, two days ago Mutts and Moms called Ellen to check on the pup she in turn told them the truth about the dogs new home. Then last night, a rep from the agency came to the hairdresser's home, claiming Ellen violated the contract by not informing the agency of the hand-off. The rep demanded to take the dog away. Ellen' s position -- yeah, she should have notified the agency, but she found a loving home and isn't that what counts? The agency rep stuck to her guns and removed the dog with cops present. Ruby is heartbroken; reduced to tears.

Ellen says, "I kept saying, 'If you want to be mad at me, be mad at me, but don't take it out on the family. Don't take it out on the dog.'"

Now I would love what you think about this story. I have volunteered at shelters in the past and many of these little creatures are never fortunate enough to be adopted into a home where they could experience a happy life.

Was it fair for Mutts and Mom's to remove Iggy? Not knowing if he will be taken care off at a new home? Did they act this way because Ellen is a celebrity? Please share your thoughts....

This agency is in the wrong. How dare they do this? First of all legally the new owners did not have to turn over the dog unless the police had a warrant. There is no way I would have complied. What is the phone number for this agency? They need to be called.

I understand that the “mutts for moms” people wanted to make sure that Iggy was in a good home. However, I have found from personal experience, that some of the “pet adoption” people are not the most balanced, level headed people that I have run into. Some of them are down right off their rocker. Sometimes they have control issues of their own that are counter productive to the cause of helping animals. Once, many years ago, when my son was 9 years old, he and I went to our local pet store to buy pet supplies for our pets. We happened to go on a day when they were having a cat adoption event. My son and I were waiting at the cash register to pay when one of the cat adoption ladies came out of the back room yelling across the store to the other ladies “I need some f_ _king help in the back! I have a cat sh-ing and puking back there!” This woman was at least 45, beyond old enough to know that her language at a public pet store, filled with kids, on a weekend, was very inappropriate. I know she was frustrated with “the mess at hand” but her attitude did not help the cats either. As she passed by me and my son continuing to spew her toxic verbiage, I said “Excuse me but I don’t think your language is appropriate for the kids in this store, I would appreciate it if you could control it.” She turned around and said “I don’t give a f_ _ k what you think!” I said

I said “Wow that was really mature” she raised her hand to slap me and the young man who had been in line behind me, and was now behind her, grabbed her hand stopping it and told her that she was not going to be hitting anyone. I gave my son the keys and told him to go wait in the car while I called the police. The police came, they said that since she did not actually hit me that they were not going to make a report but they did make her apologize to me and leave the store. The young man that stopped her from hitting me grew up to be a local police officer (a good one). And I was left thinking that some of those adoption people have control issues. The point is the doggies and kitties need good homes… Iggy being one of those in need, the ‘mutts for moms” need to re-evaluate their position and realize that they took Iggy out of a good home because the individual person dealing with his case is stuck on following the contract, not at what might be best for the dog. Sounds like a control issue to me, I wonder if it was the same lady that I dealt with in the pet store. Let Ellen say sorry I forgot to inform you and give Iggy back to the family that wants him. Stupid adoption people need to think past their own issues and help the animals.

Karen, I think they might have done this because of Ellen being a celebrity. The agency could have at least made an appointment to interview the new family instead of making a huge issue out of this. Control issues, probably true. They are obviously not thinking about the puppies welfare.

I think everyone should bombard this place with calls and e-mails. The "mutts for moms" might have wanted publicity, but probably just opened themselves up for investigations and maybe even lawsuits!

Why would Muts and Mom's agency care what happened to the dog as long as it has a good home?

Ellen's crying episode looked pretty pathetic on television. Way too hyperemotional for the situation.

I will be calling to complain. Beepbeep they do this because they want to make sure the dog is going to a good home. However they very easily could have screened the new owners instead of these strong arm tactics. If it had been me there is no way I would have given up the dog. This shelter is going to realize just how bad this is making them look.

- Ellen D. You signed a contract, your an adult, grow up!
- What America needs is one good famine and we would get realistic about pets real fast!
- I think the way Usonians are about animals is one of the reasons people in other countries hate us. They watch there babies die of starvation and we are building hotels for pets!
-Don't get me wrong, I'm crazy about the miracle of the domesticated animal, but I try always to remember they "are" animals.
- As far as Ellen Ds performance. I think it was a shtick to get nasty letters going to the pet center.
What a B!

Joy you are a cold person. Your logic escapes me. Because people are starving in other countries we should not have pets? We should not complain about an injustice because worse things are happening elsewhere? That is like saying do not give me a speeding ticket because across town there was a murder.

Do me a favor and never have a pet. You obviously are incapable of compassion and understanding.

i think ellen made a big deal over the whole situtation, but i agree the dog should have been taken away. she breeched the contract. but i think the new family should talk to the agency, and be given the chance to adopt the pet. i know it's a big hassle to everyone, but rules are rules. i hope the iggy does get the chance to be reunited with his new family.

About 15 years ago a very good friend of mine was looking to adopt a puppy. She had reciently lost her golden retriver at 13 years of age. There was an adoption service in the Encino area that we both went to and my friend found a puppy she wanted to adopt. She signed the application form and the adoption service came to check her out. This friend of mine was a horse trainer at the LA Equestrian center, has had dogs and horses her whole life. She also has a BA in animal science. They refused her. They never said "why" but we both suspected it was because she lived in an apartment and her roommates were a gay couple.
That pissed me off. She was a wonderful choice and they turned her down for there own "political" reasons. So... I adopted the dog. I was married with a big back yard. I also had kids, all under 14 at the time (four total). Then I gave the dog to her. The application said I was never to give the dog to anyone else without notification to the organization, if I did I would be fined several hundred dollars. I was also required to let them know if the dog had died. My attitude was "bite me". Over the years I have seen that same story over and over. Many qualified people have been turned down for silly reasons. Many dogs have lost the oppertunity to live in loving and safe home because of BS that some of these organizations insist on sticking to.
I feel that Ellens response was genuine and heart felt. I think that these organizations should have some monitering.
By the way, "Sadie" had a wonderful life with my friend, she went to the Equestrian center every day w

Centauri65, Well said. I completely agree with you.

Joy1, Do you have such little “joy” in your life that you are unable to care for others? It looks to me that it is you that is the “B”, not Ellen. Your shtick is old crusty and reeks of a dead soul. Are you that crazy cat adoption lady I ran into so many years ago?

Frewdiddy, You did a good thing for both the dog and your friend. Thanks for doing it. As I said earlier “Stupid adoption people need to think past their own issues and help the animals.”

Beep Beep, Ellen is a woman who is deeply hurt by what has happened… due to her mistake of not “informing” the mutt & moms. Ellen did take the responsibility to find a good home for Iggy when it did not work out for her, her cat(s) and the dog at her house. That is more than a lot of people do. She is a real person, with real feelings. Just because she was so distraught that she was unable to perform her “happy dance” for you does not mean that she was "hyperemotional". It means she let down her guard and told how she felt, and she felt very deeply... not just for the dog but for the family and the children that are hurt due to this situation. Ellen is a good person with a big heart. Are you one of those guys who can’t understand when a woman cries?
In most of your other posts I agree with you… but not on this statement you made.
The mutts & moms people care what happens because they don’t want the dog to end up on the street or in a spca where it might be killed. I get that part, but as you said “if the dog is in a good home” why are they doing this? It seems to be misguided at best. The adoption people need to take a deep look at the harm they are causing, their policies and re-write their contract, and for Gods sake, give Iggy back to the home he was loved in. Many dogs never get the chance to be in a home where they are loved and this adoption place took him out of a good home just to flex their controlling power at a celebrity. Again I say…“Stupid adoption people need to think past their own issues and help the animals.”

I've had plenty of experience with hyperemotional women.

They're ususally crying on the way out the door.

beepbeep,
Looks like you shouldn't worry so much about the ones you have not made cry... worry more about the ones who cry because of you, and the diseases you might have picked up from all your "bird plucking". Ever hear of the bird flu? :)
