Today we reported on a story about new Collin County Community College campus that will offer bachelor’s and master’s degrees.  In talking to students, it’s clear many of them are very stressed out about the cost of college.  It’s interesting how families have different values about helping students out with the expense of college.  Some students have their parents pay the whole bill for them, others are on their own.

What do you think a parent’s responsibility is when it comes to helping with college costs?  Do you think parents are doing more or less to help today than they did ten or twenty years ago?

My nephew is 13 and his college has been paid for for 2 years now. His parents enrolled in the Texas Tomorrow plan when it was introduced. This doesn't answer your question, but at his age, he had no way of paying for it.

To answer you question, I think it should be 60/40. Some kids who go to college on mom and dad's dime, seem to think it is a party and don't do what they can to do well. I think anytime someone has to pay for something, they appreciate it more and work harder for whatever it is.

I know someone who has a daughter who has started college 3 times and has finished yet all being paid for by mom and dad. After the first time she quit, she would be paying for it herself if she were my child.

We are proud to have three (!!!!!!) kid in college. All work-the older two have their own apartments. We paid into a Texas Tomorrow Fund for years for their tuition. Now that the money has run out for the older two, they are taking out loans on their own. It has taken them longer to graduate, for which the State of Texas penalizes many working students. But I ask you, with the precipitous rise in tuition and fees-the FEES being the most insidious part of the mix-how are families supposed to be able to afford it without getting seriously in debt. I have friends with kids the same age who pay for their children's living expenses AND school. I am proud that our kids have taken on this responsibility. When they graduate, their loans will be minimal. And the older two both have good GPA's. I think they have learned more about life by working while attending. My youngest is at Brookhaven, but will transfer to UNT next year. Too many parents simply write out checks without considering the sweat equity that should be required. My kids don't party, they don't get in the stupid situations that so many college kids do. There's a great deal to be said for having the kids shoulder some responsibility.
