I know a lot of people say golf is boring…even though I play golf I can understand how some might see it as an uneventful sport. But, on Sunday afternoon I was working with engineer Ed Almonte, who doesn’t follow golf. But there he was, glued to the television on our dinner break watching. OK, It wasn’t just another tournament…it was the U-S Open. It came down to the 72nd hole and Tiger sunk a clutch putt to force a sudden death playoff.

On Monday, it was Tiger Woods vs. Rocco Mediate and even if you don’t follow golf it was entertaining. After 18 holes they were still tied… but in the end Tiger won the 14th major of his career.

It was probably the two most entertaining days of golf I’ve ever seen. Mediate never backed down, erasing a 3-shot lead on the back-9 on Monday to give himself a chance to win. He even had a putt to win it all, and even though he pulled it a tad, it wasn’t short.

If you saw it, you know what I’m talking about. If you didn’t watch and think golf is boring, maybe give it a try next time. You may be surprised.

Hit ‘em straight!

It was fantastic - I watched the whole thing and it was dramatic and entertaining. But I am a golfer and a golf fan. I question how entertaining it was for the fringe fan.

The true drama of the tournament was on Saturday and Sunday, watching Tiger wince after every long shot, looking like his leg might fall off, yet somehow deliver an amazing charge to the top of the leaderboard. Any other golfer probably would not have finished the tournament and certainly wouldn't have been able to contend. Yet, here was Tiger on Saturday not only hanging around, but seizing the lead with two eagles and a birdie in his last 6 holes. Sunday was a slow build up to the 18th and became most dramatic and entertaining when Tiger birdied to tie, but then...
.... pltttthhhhhhh (that's the air deflating out of the balloon). Boo to the U.S. Open for being too pompous to switch to a sudden death playoff like every other tournament has. Talk about anticlimactic?!
- Monday's 18-hole playoff was sort of dramatic, but probably only because Tiger was involved. If Lee Westwood and Robert Karlsson were playing an 18-hole playoff today (while everyone had to go back to work), believe me, nobody would have watched or cared. BUT, if those guys played sudden death yesterday, while everyone was already invested in the viewing experience, it still would have been somewhat entertaining for the casual fan, even if Tiger wasn't involved. (continued...)

(...continued) Did you see Tiger with his little girl after he won today? How much more dramatic and entertaining would that have been yesterday at the end of the night ON FATHER'S DAY, after everyone had watched the ups and downs for four straight hours leading up to the dramatic conclusion?? A full 18 holes??? Ridiculous.
What if the Lakers & Celtics were tied at the end of regulation last night and instead of playing overtime, they came back today at 9am and played a full 48-minute game to settle it?? Makes no sense in today's world. Same goes for the U.S. Open.

the bald one watches golf sometimes.

the blonde one always leaves when he does.

I like to watch the ball fly.

and I'd love to claw up one of those "greens"

that could be fun.
