Have you ever wanted to fly?
Maybe try hang-gliding, or sky-diving?
Not me. I’m a chicken when it comes to that stuff. So, imagine my trepidation when I found out I was doing a story on a new trapeze school at the Santa Monica Pier.
The school, which started in New York and has been gaining popularity there, was about to open its Santa Monica wing. So they sent out a press release, and in it they say “And your reporter can try it, too!”
That’s all my assignment editor needed to see. Next thing I knew, I was down at the pier shaking in my shoes.
Now, if you saw my package last week, you’ll notice I was screaming as they nudged me off the platform. I know, it sounded way overblown, but like I said, I’m a chicken when it comes to that stuff. I had a safety harness and a net below, but all I could think was “what if the harness breaks” and then “and what if the net fails”.
Of course, that’s not going to happen, but I hated every minute of it. At the same time, I loved every minute of it once I was on land and able to think back on it.
Even though I was only 22 feet up in the air, it seemed higher, and the thrill of flying through the air (hardly with the greatest of ease) was almost enough to ease my fears.
But I’m a scaredy cat, what can I say. I took a lot of good-natured ribbing from a lot of people at work. That’s okay; I ended up having a blast!
Tell me about some the crazy things you’ve done.
Talk to ya later,

JY

i think cheerleaders making pyramids is risky and i don't grasp why schools allow it. the balance beam seems dangerous for gymnasts. i can't think of anything that i have done which was risky. i have no interest in skydiving or bungee jumping or cliff diving or swimming in the ocean because of fear i might drown. a trip into outer space would be interesting. i would consider taking that risk.

Yamamoto-san!

That was a bold move for you. I hope you can look back years from now, and teach your future children how to conquer any fears they might have, by using this as an example. I also recall another bold move you took a few years ago in Las Vegas...I won't say it in public, but I'm sure some of the readers remember the incident when Mark Thompson came on camera and told everyone what happened...I won't say what it was on the blog...it's up to you.

I did participate in one crazy antic that a buddy of mine decided to do on a whim: We were youth leaders at a church, working with Jr. High Kids. 1 night, only 3 boys showed up, and one of the leaders had to stay home and sleep, so that he could be up by 3AM. So my buddy decided to newspaper the guy's new van...we went to his apartment with ice cream to butter him up. While we were having ice cream, my buddy got the spare key and unlocked the van. When we got out, it was 11:55 PM. I saw someone across the way looking out of her window, and told my partner, who said I was just being scared. A few minutes later, a police chopper started flying over us with its night sun. We quickly made it look like we were just loading the van, then we took off quickly! Anaheim PD was patrolling the neighborhood while we were in the middle of this! Go figure! And at that time, I was only 24.

Oh yes, Jane, can you here the yells of BAKA-YARO flying into my face, had I been caught and arrested? The typical response from Nisei and Kibei parents, if you know what I mean. For anyone who is wondering what it means, it means "idiot-boy".
