I recently read a blog entry on here and without calling the person out by name, I'd rather allow the person to feel free to come forward and defend their stance. Here is the blog entry in question -

"3. I would take away the tax exempt status of religion all churches; all religions would pay taxes on the billions of dollars they take in"

So basically, you are saying you want to place churches under state control? All religions under one state control as a matter of fact. This is one of the fundamental reasons the basic concept of "seperation of church and state" comes from.

So do you support the concept of "seperation of church and state"? If you so choose to answer this question, you will be given ample time to provide specific reasons for your response. This message will self-distruct at the next system purge.

I what these preachers who are robbing the people to account for the billions of dollars they take in and the lavish lifestyles that they lead. Recently the courts asked several of these pimp preachers to disclose their books and they are fighting it tooth and nail. Hell if you have to report income on money made at a yard sale then churches should pay taxes too. Talk easing the tax burden that what be a real tax cut taxing the revenue of the billion dollar industry of saving souls. I wonder if they tax the courts settlements the victims of sexual abuse from the clergy receive. As far as separation of church and state we have not had that in the last 8 years with these so-called bible thumping presidents. By the way why won’t Huckabee step down so we can support McCain? I support separation of church and state but “SHOW ME THE MONEY”.

If you impose that on one tax exempt entity you must impose it on all tax exempt entities. For example the donation s to Goodwill (talk about your highway robbery) Hospitals, Police departments, Fire departments, Habitat for humanity, and on and on and on. This would open a huge Pandora’s Box.

Personally, I can see that the church building/grounds where people gather to worship being tax exempt. However, all the other capitalist enterprises engaged in by the churches should be taxed. These are enterprises such as owning/operating convenience stores, land/building purchases for community affairs, land/buildings purchased as a "retreat" for the pastor and deacons, or whatever, and lets not forget Bingo (LOL). I believe that churches should pay taxes on anything other that the main meeting place for worship. Also, the pastor's who use church motor vehicles for driving to and from work, should pay the standard rate of mileage, the same as police officers do who drive their patrol vehicles to and from work. Just my personal opinion.

So I take it you want a state-run church Axe?

If a church can show where they are not making a profit off the people if the pators can be forth coming about their income and what they pay taxes on then those churches could maybe enjoy tax exempt entities. On second thought to answer your question I think churches should be done away with all together. There is alot of money being made without taxes being paid and it is not being used to help the needy.

"SHOW ME THE RECEIPTS"!

Most NC Churches ARE taxed now, I think, but origanally, it was meant to keep the Church out of the State (Old England), not vice-versa...ironic, isn't it?

JQPublix, how does paying taxes on income make a church "state-run"? I pay taxes on my income. I don't consider myself "state-run".

I agree with Axekick that church's MUST be held accountable for the money they bring in. At what point does a "charitable" church-run enterprise become a "for-profit" endeavour?

I am doing well Axe. I think that churches and other not for profit entities are required to provide the IRS with proof of how their monies are collected and spent. Not for profit institutions are scrutinized more closely than you might expect. Below is a link to the IRS tax requirements for churches if you want to muddle through the 28 page document.

Caddyboy, you are correct that churches are scrutinized more closely than some people think. They do have to have receipts for everything. At our church, once a year we have a meeting where all the memebers are given the budget that we have to approve, and everything is itemized so we know what is being spent where, including pastor's salaries etc. For the children's part that I am involved in, I have to have receipts for anything I want to be reimbursed for like teaching materials. If I don't keep receipts, I don't get reimbursed. The churches are held responsible to the IRS for all the spending and receiving. I don't know why people think that money that is given to the church is just used for whatever and they are not held accountable for how they spend it.

Well I know for a fact churches slip through the cracks or the IRS turns a death ear there is no way some of these churches can operate TV production companies, Book stores, Daycare centers, homes, land, vacation retreats that they rent out and be non profit no way is that possible. And they should pay tax on that money now if bush wanted to ease the burden on the tax payers collect taxes on these million dollar churches.

FarmTruck and Axe,

There is a distinction between a church employee paying taxes and the church itself. Church employees are required to pay individual taxes no matter what. What alarmed me was that Axe said churches should not be exempt from taxes because of it. A church is responsible also for that not to be an issue.

Its a personal accountability for a church to make sure the funds are being misused. Making a statement saying every church should not be given tax exemption is rather obvious given any DOI statement. So either we are going against the DOI and thus any establishment of the Constitution, or we aren't.

Cefalo Dollar, Joyce Myers, and 4 others have been asked by several senators to provide their churches financial records and all have refused they are all about to be indicted. These pastors run multi million dollar churches and have used their non-profit status to build empires and now congress wants them to show and prove there are no personal profits being made and they all have LAWYERED UP! It was not Jim Bakers adultery that brought down his empire it was the IRS. With pay offs failed business ventures where investors lost money non-profit right and lavish spending by the Bakers and other high ranking members of the church board.

The conservative platform has been pro-life, Taxes whether it’s cutting taxes or spending reductions, and religion. Here is the perfect opportunity to ease the tax burden on Americans yet they fight to keep pimp preachers in their designer suits and Mercedes Benz. Make these churches prove that they are using the money they take in for charity and not for profit. There is no argument you can make that will change my mind it is not an unreasonable request to see the financial records of the church and if they are found to be for profit organizations they should be made to pay taxes on that money! Ever see a church where the members give the pastor a love offering of a limousine now tell me is that right should donations be used to give pastor a gift like that?
That is my final opinion on this matter.

JQPublix, what I, and it seems Axekick, are saying, is that enough churches have failed to be personally accountable for the funds that they generate, and the means by which they generate them.

In my own church, a daycare program was once run. I know for a fact that a local church allowed members to take advantage of the church's facilities and utilities to basically run a small business out of. After much grumbling amongst the membership, they no longer operate there, but that is but one small example, with personal experience, within a local congregation, which shows how lines can be blurred, and things such as that can get out of hand.

The pastor leading the church is taxed based on his salary. The members of a church are taxed based on their salaries. Churches budget what they are given "AFTER TAXES BY THE MEMBERS" to take care of internal things like "daycare or child care".

I think both of you missed the long bus. j/k I rode the small one.

What you are talking about is double-taxing people. Its almost Marxist-like.
