I've heard quite a bit about the money the contractor. It might be easy to think that the owner should keep the money but I think the "King Solomon" approach might be better. Each side gets half. After all the homeowner wouldn't have the money if not for the contractor, but the contractor wouldn't have found it if the homeowner didn't hire them.

I have to disagree.
The contractor was hired and paid to apparently take down a wall. He did the job, and got paid. What was found in the wall has nothing to do with the contractor. In my opinion the homeowner was very generous to offer 10%.
Just goes to show--- no good deed goes unpunished!

Agree! Why should he get paid twice? Everything in someone’s home belongs to them. It just like a stranger walking in your house and found your money lying around and they take, saying I found it.

I think she showed her appreciation by giving him a 10% finder’s fee, he should have been happy that she thought enough to give him that. He let his greed overrule his common sense and the backlash could hurt his business.

Who would want someone with this mentality working in their home?

I don't recall hearing if the money was placed by the ancestors of the owners or not, but I'll assume it wasn't their ancestors that put it there. In which it really their money either. They just happened to own the house. The owner has no real claim to it. Since it was a symbiotic relationship that led to the money it should be split 50/50. They both have "laws" on their side in this. But I think both are being greedy.

When you purchase property, everything on that property belongs to you. If the contractor would've found black mold in the walls would he have split the repair bills - oh I guess that's when it would be the homeowners property.

I'm quite sure that there are many laws that cover this situation it just depends upon the interpretation. However I Must agree with gyro_Jumper. If the contractor is entitled to half, then I believe it would open up a flood gate. Can you imagine service people comming into your home claiming to find things and demanding that they recieve half the value. For instance Plumbers that find expensive jewelry in drains, and appliance repairmen that find expensive jewelry in dryers. The house belonged to the women, and so does the money. The contractor got paid for his service, and should be grateful that she offered a finders fee. He's just being plain GREEDY.

Legally the home owner should get the money because that would open the flood gates. But morally, that money was never either of theirs. The true owners are likely dead, so unless you can track down the ancestors the home owner and contractor who found it should split it.

If he would have found black mold in the walls, he would have charged the homeowner full price to have it cleaned up, not split the price because he found it. Same goes for something found that is good instead of bad.

Money belongs to owner, period. Contractor should have taken the finders fee that the owner offered.

Everything in that house belongs to the owner of the property. If the contractor takes anything from the home then it is considered theft. He is there to do a job; no more, no less.

He has no business of maiking claim. I hope he looses work for this jackass move.
