This is the straw that breaks the camel's back.

During Military funeral services the American flag is folded into a triangle. It is folded 11 times to make the triangle. Each of the folds has a symbolic meaning the last of which represents God.  Here is what breaks the camel's back,..... guess what it is yet.

THE GOVERNMENT HAS NOW BANNED IT!

in a manner of speaking. The ceremony can still be preformed, just by a family member or somebody else, not a member of the military (not sure to what extent).

If they are going to make a big fuss about this, they can at least give the option to the family of what the meaning of the last fold is.

When I heard this story, I saw the flagged folded at my grandpa's funeral, I wondered just what kind of foul comment he would have had for the people who led to this. From what I understand it was the complaint of 1 person.

I'm with you on this, big time.
The complaint of one person, seem to be the trend. Where was this? When was the legislation passed? Details please.
That trend need to stop, this is obsurd!!!

I thought it was the majority rules. I never heard of such ridiculous stuff. Why does it seem like the majority has no say anymore?

Are you sure this is banned? Nationwide? I'm a little curious as to how such a major ceremonial and honorable tradition could be scrapped so quickly.....and quietly.

I was attending a Veterans funeral less then a Month ago; the Army’s Honor Guards were there and performed TAPS that had everyone crying! They folded the flag in the traditional manner with no changes. I myself a retired veteran of more than twenty years have never heard of this ceremony changing in any way. I’m sure if it was, it would have made the media by now. Yet you never know these days. Perhaps the ceremony you speak of was a special request due to religious beliefs or lack of?

The missing part of the story, is that recently many K.I.A. in Iraq are Non-Christians who have served their country honorably and do not wish to have a "Christian" funeral.

Regardless of your opinions on non-Christians, they are serving and dying in Iraq, and their wishes should be honored.

There have been several Pagans, Wiccans, Atheists, Muslims, and other non-Christians who have died in the foolish immoral, and preemptive invasion and occupation of Iraq, they should get the type of burial they choose, it's the least we could do (the best is to get them out of there NOW!), but if a Christian wants to be buried the traditional way, they should be allowed to be burried that way.

Who ever said the last fold was Christian. It is Jewish.

I can't seem to find any major news sources that have information on it, but a number of smaller sources like college and local news stations have reported on it. I originally saw it a ch. 19. But I haven't a story on their website. Hopefully some larger news will report on this. 19 is also where I got the Jewish thing. So that may not be 100% accurate.

Not sure how or why folding a flag is Jewish or Christian?

Don't really care about this!

I do know that there have been a number of non christians who have demanded Pagan and Atheist burial markers, and the Pentagon rejected it, but were later forced to change the policy due to angry parents/friends/etc. to do the right thing and honor them.

The Atheist grave marker is the symbol of an atom. I think the Pagan grave marker is the symbol of 3 swirls, or something like that.

Flag Folding
As an Army and Navy custom, the flag is lowered daily at the last note of retreat. Special care should be taken that no part of the flag touches the ground. The Flag is then carefully folded into the shape of a tri-cornered hat, emblematic of the hats worn by colonial soldiers during the war for Independence. In the folding, the red and white stripes are finally wrapped into the blue, as the light of day vanishes into the darkness of night.

This custom of special folding is reserved for the United States Flag alone.

How to fold the Flag

Step 1

To properly fold the Flag, begin by holding it waist-high with another person so that its surface is parallel to the ground.

Step 2

Fold the lower half of the stripe section lengthwise over the field of stars, holding the bottom and top edges securely.

Step 3

Fold the flag again lengthwise with the blue field on the outside.

Step 4

Make a triangular fold by bringing the striped corner of the folded edge to meet the open (top) edge of the flag.

Step 5

Turn the outer (end) point inward, parallel to the open edge, to form a second triangle.

Step 6

The triangular folding is continued until the entire length of the flag is folded in this manner.

Step 7

When the flag is completely folded, only a triangular blue field of stars should be visible.

Flag Folding Ceremony

The flag folding ceremony described by the Uniformed Services is a dramatic and uplifting way to honor the flag on special days, like Memorial Day or Veterans Day, and is sometimes used at retirement ceremonies.
Here is a typical sequence of the reading:

(Begin reading as Honor Guard or Flag Detail is coming forward).

The flag folding ceremony represents the same religious principles on which our country was originally founded. The portion of the flag denoting honor is the canton of blue containing the stars representing the states our veterans served in uniform. The canton field of blue dresses from left to right and is inverted when draped as a pall on a casket of a veteran who has served our country in uniform.

In the Armed Forces of the United States, at the ceremony of retreat the flag is lowered, folded in a triangle fold and kept under watch throughout the night as a tribute to our nation's honored dead. The next morning it is brought out and, at the ceremony of reveille, run aloft as a symbol of our belief in the resurrection of the body.

(Wait for the Honor Guard or Flag Detail to unravel and fold the flag into a quarter fold--resume reading when Honor Guard is standing ready.)

The first fold of our flag is a symbol of life.

The second fold is a symbol of our belief in the eternal life.

The third fold is made in honor and remembrance of the veteran departing our ranks who gave a portion of life for th

The third fold is made in honor and remembrance of the veteran departing our ranks who gave a portion of life for the defense of our country to attain a peace throughout the world.

The fourth fold represents our weaker nature, for as American citizens trusting in God, it is to Him we turn in times of peace as well as in times of war for His divine guidance.

The fifth fold is a tribute to our country, for in the words of Stephen Decatur, "Our country, in dealing with other countries, may she always be right; but it is still our country, right or wrong."

The sixth fold is for where our hearts lie. It is with our heart that we pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

The seventh fold is a tribute to our Armed Forces, for it is through the Armed Forces that we protect our country and our flag against all her enemies, whether they be found within or without the boundaries of our republic.

The eighth fold is a tribute to the one who entered in to the valley of the shadow of death, that we might see the light of day, and to honor mother, for whom it flies on mother's day.

The ninth fold is a tribute to womanhood; for it has been through their faith, love, loyalty and devotion that the character of the men and women who have made this country great have been molded.

The tenth fold is a tribute to father, for he, too, has given his sons and daughters for the defense of our country since they were first born.

The eleventh fold, in the eyes of a Hebrew citizen, represents the lower portion of the seal of King David and King Solomon, and glorifies, in their eyes, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

The twelfth fold, in the eyes of a Christian citizen, represents an emblem of eternity and glorifies, in their eyes, God the Father, the Son, and Holy Ghost.

When the flag is completely folded, the stars are uppermost, reminding us of our national motto, "In God we Trust."

(Wait for the Honor Guard or Flag Detail to inspect the flag--after the inspection, resume reading.)

After the flag is completely folded and tucked in, it takes on the appearance of a cocked hat, ever reminding us of the soldiers who served under General George Washington and the sailors and marines who served under Captain John Paul Jones who were followed by their comrades and shipmates in the Armed Forces of the United States, preserving for us the rights, privileges, and freedoms we enjoy today.

You want to call me out on this? I too spent many years serving our country. You obiously spent at least a portion of life living this way also.

This is a sacred vow that has give many families a certain security after they have lost a loved one in a war. Did you really serve? I have my doubts.

so basicaly the folding may not be completly christian but it is in the judao / abrihamic form. (christian, jewish, muslim). i agree with gorbash that we are not all in these forms of religion. there are many non judeos in iraq. not everyone believes in eternal life and the teachings of hebrews.there were other civilizations at the time of the "chosen ones"
they just are not as historicalized as the hebrews and the hebrew "truth" marketing via the romans. when you are given the choice to be this or die you tend to choose this or your not around to teach the other

As we all can see, there are twelve folds in accordance with our national ceremonial flag folding not 11. in addition as per this post, claiming 11 folds removing the eleventh step would only leave 10 folds as proclaimed in this post. I called the VA. And Dept of the Navy ceremonial honor guard east 9th street federal bldg regarding this posts claim. I was informed that no such changes have been made and only congress can change such tradition pending the president approval or veto. As of today and yesterday this tradition has not changed and our Dept of the Navy has no information or plans for any changes in the future as of today.

I did not write this post, I only responded to it. As for your comment about my retirement, You served, I rwetired I don't expect silly people to respect what I accomplished in twenty years of service. I fought for your freedom so you can beleive in faith. Not so I can be forced there is is only your religion

In addition If you notice, the folding of the flag has something for everyone. Only you would be so vein to think that the flag folding ceremony would be designed to be catered just for you. Those eleven steps are for you to choose from. Do you really think the military will have a different ceremony for every belief? WOW!

Also, what branch did you serve in? I’m confused as per your reply. I can’t remember swearing in to service over a ceremonial burial flag? I also can’t remember swearing in to god? I did swear an oath to my country and president of the United States. And anyone who served or recently retired or quit, knows that the military does not require or ask anyone to swear ant kind of oath to God! Now I question your service in the military for not knowing these basic things.

Where are the "rights" for those that are offended by the removal of God! Christmas is no longer allowed to be called that but we are pushed to celebrate Halloween, one of the most evil times of the year there is. As a Christian I am highly offended, Can you hear me, I'm HIGHLY OFFENDED by the celebration of Halloween while I'm supposed to be quiet and not talk to anyone about Christmas! Enough already! It this doesn't prove there is a spiritual war going on then nothing will. Your either going to stand for good or evil. Our soldiers are fighting for our freedom to choose, not to be controlled by the same government that sent them there! Again, I'm offended, but is anybody listening? Maybe more need to speak up!
