Just what IS the penalty for those who run from police at high speed?

From what I gather, it's not NEARLY stiff enough.  People who run, at high speed, from the cops are endangering the public as significantly as if they discharged a firearm in public.  Indeed, the penalty for high-speed evasion should be comparable to those for committing armed robbery (e.g. MANDITORY jail time).

Maybe this would give criminals a little pause before running and putting lives at risk.  At the very least it would remove such blatant disregarders of life from society for a while.

Mandatory jail time should be imposed along with a stiff fine. And if innocent person gets killed by the person trying to elude the police, then they should be charged with murder, sued, and serve time in jail. The Police Dept. shouldn't be sued. The person running from the police has the opportunity to stop for the police.

Amen. Blaming the police for chasing a criminal is the dumbest thing I have ever heard of.

The penalty seems to be instant stardom on local media

The Rep in Daytona.. our State Senator, a GOP girl, Evelyn Lynn and Joyce Cusak a liberal DEM, feel the police should let them go... and not chase. No kidding.

These people are worthless. Now they see why they lost my company to Seminole County.

Anyone know what the current median sentance is for felony evasion? I really don't know (and not sure where to look it up online).

From everything I gather, it's not NEARLY stiff enough. Police seem to talk about it almost like it was someone running away on FOOT (e.g. annoying but not risking lives with a deadly weapon)

Indeed, police shouldn't be blamed. Running at high speed from the cops shouldn't be treated much differently from discharging a firearm in public.

TG, that's insane. I realize their argument about not endangering the public but letting them go is ultimately endangers the public just as much.

I have come up with several ideas for stopping such vehicles (in many situations at least) but there's a vast gulf between a fiesable idea and implementation....

Heir: Amen.

LOL... TG, did you make that an intentional pun? :-)

"Hier" or "Hiero", part of the origin of my pseudo, means "sarcred" or "holy".

So, "Hier Amen" would be perfectly apropos! LOL....

(but I still wonder what the penalty for felony evasion is... maybe I can find a website...)

Evasion of the police at high speeds should result in mandatory jail time and a hefty fine that they would not forget about anytime soon. and as for them hitting someone and hurting or killing they should be charged with aggrivated assult or murder if it fits. any damage they assess should be paid by them... and not the victims or the government... but yeah this is how i stand on this subject.!!!

On my business card, it says "Renaissance Man". That sums it up somewhat succinctly...
