Clarity in a world of chaos

OK, I know 635 is under construction (After 10 years, it always seems to be). I don't like drivign 635, but never really feel "unsafe" out there.  Tuesday night, in the rain, was different.

I was just east of Garland on 635 towards Dallas. It was raining lightly, and traffic was moving kinda slow 40 - 45 MPH.  As I drove I thought to myself, "Are my headlights on?" I checked, and sure enough- they were on. I guess the  reflective material on the stripes of the road has worn off- because I couldn't see more than 3-4 stripes ahead of me.

I figured it was a just a 635 thing, but- when I exited onto 75,  guess what? I couldn't see those stripes much better. Instead of 3 - 4 stripes, I was at 5 or 6.

While I don't expect to see as clearly as one can on a clear/dry night, in the rain- that was ridiculous.  I don't know if the paint has lost it's reflectivity, if there are no reflectors left, or both.  Nighttime visibility on 635 was very poor.  I have 20/15 vision- so I know it's not my eyesight. I know anyone with eyesight worse than mine- were really enduring a Maalox moment.

Perhaps we need to go back to yellow stripes instead of white- or, maybe we just need freshly painted white lines on 635, whenever they finsih doing those HOV lanes.  At least from Mesquite to Irving... It would be very easy to wander into someone else's lane.

I've been here 10 years, and have driven 635 countless times, as well as the Tollway, George Bush, 183, 114, 121, 820, I-35E, 1-35W, 380 and 720.  I've never seen non-foggy roadway visibility that low.

Does anyone else agree, or is it just me?

I do agree. I was on I-75 S when the deluge hit and couldn't see squat!

By the way, 635 is bad as far as construction is concerned, but Atlanta has been like that for 30 years.

It's not you. 635 has always had bad stripes on it.

What is the deal with 75 and the black and white stripes on it? I can't see black stripes at night.

For those among us (like me!) who have not been here all that long (just three years), that failure to properly lane the highways is an invitation to disaster....and, just as you pointed out, it's almost a given that you'll "wander" into the wrong lane....even at slow "under control" speed.

We never had those reflectorized markings up North....they wouldn't last two weeks with snowplows, sand and salt...so, it was with pleasure that I first saw them in Texas on SOME highways. The new 7 lane configuration of FM1709 in Keller is beautifully marked. That makes for much quicker, easier and safer adjustment to what was just four lanes.

The black is designed to make the white stripe show up better against the light concrete in the daytime. The white stripe if not too old should show up fine at night if you know of an area that does not you can call your local Txdot and they will check it out but in a heavy rain brand new stripe won't reflect very good.

If every city was marked and lighted (overhead road signs, too!) the way North Richland Hills is, we'd all be in 7th Heaven. Man, they do a nice job there.

The construction over on I-30 going towards Grand Prairie is really bad. There's this really weird S-curve that turns in sharply and there's almost no stripes or road beads.

Gotta be on your toes on these North Texas freeways.

while i driving in california , many years back, i was surprized at how , it seemed , that every road had those reflective little bumps . even backwood county roads had enough relecter bumps that they practically lit up the road,,,, how safe

My fear is that LBJ won't be striped properly until the construction is complete in Garland and Mesquite. Keep that in mind for the next 18 months when rough weather strikes again...like today, tomorrow and on the 4th of July.

It will if you would pull a Saul Garza on Txdot! LOL
