Tonight my story for FOX11 at 10pm and MY 13 News at 11pm is about the person who you've seen to the left of the disgraced New York Governor Eliot Spitzer. Its his wife. Her name is Silda. And, like her husband, standing in front of cameras in this kind of situation -- a sex scandal -- can't be easy.
I was at a store before going to work and I heard someone say he felt badly for her .. "how tough it must be?"
So, again we have a situation where we think about Tammy Wynette's blockbuster country hit "Stand by your Man!" Should she? Should she be part of the public picture when he resigns? How do you feel? We're looking for answers as we hit the streets for tonight's story.
Looking forward to reading some of your responses.

Well Mister Hal. All I can say is she got stiffed and it wasn't the moral way to have been treated in life. I have always believed that if you have someone that loves you, you should show them the greatest respect and for every day you are here, but what can I say about today's world, and that is just me I suppose. Perhaps I am just to common sense old fashioned!

Interesting comments tonight all the way around. Maybe the most striking was from UCLA's Juliet Williams that when your married to a politician in many ways the spouse has to think about their public image too which is why every time we see a sex scandal involving a politician in trouble the wife is right by his side.

Hal,

I think we should all look at ourselves when we see what happens next to the Spitzers. We should be asking ourselves are we doing what is right in God's sight? If we are not, it's time to change our ways. Meantime, let's hope that there is a healing in the Spitzer family.

When the Clintons were going through their similar type of little scandal, Silda Spitzer was quoted as saying that if this ever happened to her, she would "be outta there..." I hear that they are presently sleeping in separate beds and barely on speaking terms. Now is a great time for her to be looking for new digs, as the housing market is at an all time low. Happy house-hunting, Silda!

I don't see why she has to guard Spitzer's public image unless she does have plans to stay with him. There could be any number of reasons she would stay.

First of all, there are minor children involved. Many people would argue for an intact family (but how intact can it be when dad is off with another woman and spending the family money in that way).

Secondly, she may be so burned she does not want to even consider a new life alone, and can't imagine every trusting another man.

Another point--might be that they had already made their peace about this in private and are just tolerating each other as friends and roommates. I don't think so, though, she looks like she has been to hell and back.

I guess the family will be vacating the Governor's Mansion, maybe they will go separate ways then. I sorta hope so. We women need an example.

Moogie,

Be very careful of what you hope for; it's not always a good thing. I have had some friends who have had a cheating spouse, and have divorced the spouse; they have gone through a ringer of an ordeal while going through it. I would never wish such a thing on anyone after seeing several of my friends go through a divorce. If you really want an example, look at the folks who have stayed married for many years with both the husband and wife staying faithful to each other: our governor Arnold and Maria, Nancy Reagan, Betty Ford, former President Jimmy Carter and his wife, Mitt Romney and his wife...just a few good examples of those who stayed faithful and committed.

Moogie, I chose to respond to you specifically since you said that you women need an example, but my reply also goes out to all who are thinking along either the same or a similar line. I still stand by what I said earlier, in that I hope the Spitzers get some help, and get healed. What happened is very tragic and painful. While it's true that Silda Spitzer has the moral grounds for a divorce, it would be probably better for her in the long run to get emotionally healed first before she decides what to do next: to forgive and stay married, or to forgive while getting divorced. I would also hope that Elliot Spitzer gets help, learns a lesson from this, gets healed, and changes his ways.

Take care now.

Yes, there is a lot to be said for healing and thinking time. I agree with you about the loving couples, but there are many bitter and toxic couples. I've watched two of my best friends in the past four years discover that they had spent the past 30 years with cheaters. A death would have been emotionally less taxing. They are both out of the toxic environments now and far happier. So, in short, if the relationship has been a nuturing one and the cheating was an exception, fine, stay together if they like.

i wouldn't be singing "stand by your man", more like "hit the road, jack" after he's been jumping on that trampolina.
