The warming continues!  I still can't figure how some "scientists" claim that the earth has been cooling for the last 20 years??

Climate warming has increased the volume of summer meltwater on glaciers, which has weakened ice shelves, the scientists say. Sea ice, which protects ice shelves from ocean swell, has reduced also as a result of warming temperatures.

The Wilkins Ice Shelf began retreating in the 1990s. A major breakout occurred in 1998 when 1,000 square kilometers of ice was lost in a few months.

The Wilkins is one of a string of ice shelves that have collapsed in the West Antarctic Peninsula in the past 30 years. The Larsen B became the best known of these, disappearing in just one month in 2002.

The Prince Gustav Channel, Larsen Inlet, Larsen A, Wordie, Muller, and the Jones Ice Shelf collapses also underscore the unprecedented warming in this region of Antarctica.

Professor Vaughan of the British Antarctic Survey said, "Climate warming in the Antarctic Peninsula has pushed the limit of viability for ice shelves further south, setting some of them that used to be stable on a course of retreat and eventual loss. The Wilkins breakout won't have any effect on sea-level because it is floating already, but it is another indication of the impact that climate change is having on the region."

Antarctic Ice Shelf Collapse Blamed on Warming Climate

BOULDER, Colorado, March 26, 2008 (ENS) - An Antarctic ice shelf the size of Manhattan that has been in place for several hundred years is collapsing and falling into the sea because of rapid climate change in a fast-warming region of Antarctica,

Glenn, instead of global warming overall, couldn't the shape, size and location of the ozone layer and any holes in it play a part ? Over the years I've seen where the holes in the ozone layer have increased, decreased in size, and shifted position from year to year. How much of that is considered normal I don't know. Have you any comments on this ?

And yet, I am shocked that people are still unwilling to debate Global Warming from an objective position an allow evidence from both sides to be heard!

Global climate argument expects us to look at numbers from NOAA that can't even follow guidelines for position and collection of data, and we are expected to understand the climate and history of it from a 30 year window? Anyone that dismisses evidence as far back as we can obtain it is disingeneous and IMO suspect of pandering for selfish purposes.

Only a tiny bit further than 30 years, many of the same "experts" were warning us of the comming ice age!!

If you can even get past the domestic policy mandated by global enviromental nuts, they don't have a problem with China and India pumping it out with the antiquated technology that is cheap, and no regulation of industry. Then we complain about China's cheaper goods comming her?

Want to debate this topic? Lets just do that from ALL the facts, ALL the evidence then.

Glenn, there is much truth to what you say, however, even if we [USA] do our part to thwart the global warming problem, will it be enough?

What about China, India, Japan and all the other very high population nations? We are not the cop of the world and we cannot dictate how other countries conduct business. We have tried this before and just look at the consequences!

We couldn't even get other nations to change by imposing sanctions. Again, tried it and the ramifications....awful.

Also, Glenn...we always watch your weather and you are great, but that picture of you and your brother is scary! Put that gun down, man! Not that you don't have the right to bear arms...you do! And I am not against guns...we have one, too. What's troubling me is the image of that shirt and the gun! My hubby had a shirt just like it and the first time I saw Larry the Cable Guy, I burned it!

Oh, yeah. A guy I work with said you live in his neighborhood and you always get the best weather over there. LOL!

The problem is that people turn this issue into a political debate and false truths are thrown left or right to get votes and get money.

Another problem is a certain religion who belives the "End Times" are comming so whats the use of preserving the earth when they are leaving pretty soon? Well thats what they teach their kids anyway. (Jesus Camp)

I think most Christians believe in preserving the earth, to do otherwise would be sacrilegious. God gave us the earth to live on and as such it's our responsibility to keep it in the best condition possible. No one wants something returned to them in worse condition than it was when it was loaned out.

As for the arguments for global cooling and warming, the people pumping out fact's about global cooling need to release where they get their funding. Because I know quite a few scientists and engineers and none can even see where these crackpots are coming from. Their theory's when put into practice are unsubstantiated.

And here we go again.

Tell me, Glenn - how specifically does ANYTHING we do increase the temperature of the planet?

Algore says it's carbon emmissions (really looking forward to his defending that in a court of law, by the way). How does carbon increase the kinetic energy of air on the planet?

If you can't answer that, then you can't argue 'man made global warming.'

Which, of course, you can't

Well, let me see.... I'll first have to change that picture of me and the gun. I thought it was appropriate for the internet and blogging....I usually only wear that thing on a cold winters day down here. It has a good smell of autumn in it...so I'll keep it hanging in my closet for awhile.

The hard data that is used for climate research is solid for the last 100 years...after that it gets a little shaky. The nws folks and world wide weather depts. all use strict guielines for thermometer locations and height etc etc to keep the data "true". I agree that someone who has an agenda can manipulate the end result by changing the data sites used from year to year to skew the end result. That is why I question what I read and hear.

I believe the temp. increase is due to normal fluctuations in solar energy cycles....which I'm still learning about...and an enhancement due to the greenhouse effect. Since the early 1900's we've been pumping tons of emmissions into the atmosphere which trap the suns energy and cause the warming. Its not that humans are creating more heat...we are trapping more of the suns heat. Here is a brief overview from wikipedia (I don't think Al Gore funds that website)

Anthropogenic greenhouse effect
Main article: Global warming
CO2 production from increased industrial activity (fossil fuel burning) and other human activities such as cement production and tropical deforestation has increased the CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere. Measurements of carbon dioxide amounts from Mauna Loa observatory show that CO2 has increased from about 313

Disagree! The "strict guidelines for thermometer locations, height, etc. last year were exposed as almost ridiculous! Stations on West sides of brick buildings, on rooftops next to air conditioning vents, fenced off areas literally on the black asphault just baking away!

We even have recent reports that CO2 is NOT the culprit! Mankind even takes a seat behind, volcanic activity, solar radiation, titanic plate releases, forrest fires, etc.

wikipedia not the greatest sources of information either as it is not peir reviewed by any means.

I like what the founder of the Weather Channel has said recently! He calls if basically a complete hoax, and when I see attacks on anyone that even attempts to bring forth evidence against the debate, that shows me someone is defending an alternative agenda.

A few things here...]

For some informative, cooling off...try this website...

I think nit picking out every little warming fact or cooling fact is not going to get anyone, anywhere.

Personally, there is no evidence of warming not ending. By the way, NOAA came on the record the other day and said it has been the coolest year since 2001-2002.

I want to clarify the "warming not ending"

The Earth could very well be warming now and it will eventually cool off. There is no evidence supporting a continious warming trend.

I wanted to clarify what I meant.

If these "scientist" are so good, please explain what happened to the global cooling scare of the 70's??????

According to them just 30 years ago, Fla should now be under a foot of snow!!!

Yep.. Isn't it interesting that NOAA now shows the coolest year since 2001-2002 AFTER they were exposed for ridiculous readings from equipment all over the nation improperly stationed.....

We have Ice melting away and exposing mine enterances with equipment stacked at the opening... SOMEONE was working that mine before it covered with Ice long ago...

But some basic questions: What is the Earth's "normal" temp? and how do we derive it?

Polar caps on Mars increase and decrease... is that our fault too?

I just do not understand some things...

The temperatures that are observed in Florida this time of the year, are they not the same temperature values that were observed this time last year in lets say 1991, 1992, 1993? Are lower eighties a sudden increase for late March?

From Pittsburgh to Maine, the Northeast (With the exception of the Mid-Atlantic) has had some of biggest snowfall totals for the Winter season in several years. The snow has not dissapeared.

Why are the ice images always taken in the Spring and Summer?

I certainly think, whether you are supporting global warming claims or not, that if you are on television you should potray both sides of the issue. It is not right to just cut out passages from PRO Global Warming blogs.

But since fairness does not always happen and it takes others to bring fairness to the table, here are some...

"Count northern Vermont’s sugar maples among those wallowing in the winter blahs. Sugaring season across the state is dawdling, because continuous cold temperatures are keeping the sap from flowing out of maple trees and into the evaporators Vermont’s sugar makers use to create syrup."

“None of the models used by IPCC is initialized to the observed state and none of the climate states in the models corresponds even remotely to the current observed climate”.

A few months ago Florida's Orange crops were seriously threatned...Freeze Warnings, Frost Advisories, and Hard Freeze Warnings were issued...

Weather forecasters for the nation indeed said this cold snap was rare and not seen too often. Prices of orange juice increased slightly in the nation as the damage estimated were counted.

Contrary to media hype, the vast majority of Antarctica has cooled over the past 50 years and ice coverage has grown to record levels since satellite monitoring began in the 1979, according to peer-reviewed studies and scientists who study the area. The western penninsula is the only place warming is occuring.

Time to refute more of these ridiculous claims...

The full Wilkins 6,000 square mile ice shelf is just 0.39% of the current Antarctic ice cover (just 0.1% of the extent last September). A very small piece broke off as an iceberg (37 square miles). Then only a small portion of it around 160 square miles partially disintegrated late this February into early March. That represents just 2.67% of the full Wilkins ice sheet and 0.01% of the total Antarctic icecover (0.003% of its level last September), a little like an icicle falling from a snow and ice cover roof. No big deal (unless you are standing beneath it).

I think I temporarily put this raging inferno out by cooling it off with a good amout of icing.

Don't mess with my forecasts!! It's been an excting ride here in Central Florida in our wild world of weather. It's started with the storm of the century in 1993 and continues today.....
