Rock or Country? Round 4
Mar 31, 2008 | 7:46 PM PST
Category:
Music
Thanks to inspiration by IS, I have devised this game...
I will post snippets of various songs and you get to guess if it is a "rock" song or a "country" song.
Now,
a lot of songs cross over and could be called either, I am looking for:
would you find this in the rock or country section of the music
department of Wal-Mart or Target (they don't separate out
blues/bluegrass/rap/etc).
Some of you may want to step it up a
bit and guess the song/artist...we can do that later. I will delete any
of those types of posts before I announce it is OK to do that...(it is
only fair to the others)
Some may be easy, some may not...give it your best shot. There is no planned order to these, they are random in their placement.

Ignore the name and artist. My audio software did that and I didn't have time to fix it...

Has KZPS "Jumped The Shark"?

Yes, I know, not a literal use of the phrase, but you get the idea...
For those of you not familiar with the term "jump the shark", it stems from Happy Days in the waning seasons they had a episode where Fonzie jumped a shark on skis. This has come to symbolize the beginning of the end for something in the entertainment industry when it has outlived its lifespan.
I use the phrase today in reference to KZPS folding and running commercials again. They have been running some idiotic cell phone commercial for a couple of weeks now (not sure what company).
Redbeard did a decent job setting up the station to function without traditional commercials and playing an great combination of compatible music from the genres of classic rock and modern "Texas Country" (not really country, but that is what the industry calls it). I say "decent" job because they seemed to get stuck in ruts of one artist or another. First it was ZZ Top and SRV, then Springsteen and most recently, Johnny Cougar/Melonhead...er..uh camp.
Redbeard has forced me to tune out in the afternoons because of his idiotic diversion from music to politics, playing soundbites from artists that contradict themselves or are just clueless about this government and the Constitution.
Maybe KZPS hasn't "jumped the shark", just Redbeard has! I'll still listen to Bo & Jim as I always have, unless KZPS flips back to playlists of 20 songs.
Clear Channel (CC) management stated that they had no timeline for profitibility or ratings, but it looks like they have decided to give up on the "commercial free" format.

KZPS Making DFW Radio Better
May 22, 2007 | 9:26 AM PST

Even if you don't like the classic rock KZPS is playing, the other CR station in town seems to have improved its playlist since KZPS changed theirs. They even got rid of that crappy morning show.
I was listening to KZPS this AM when I started getting static (I think the batteries are low) so I flipped it over to the Bone and they were playing Kenny Wayne Sheppard and followed that with possibly the best Lindsay Buckingham/Fleetwood Mac song. They followed that with commercials, so I tuned back to KZPS.
This may well have been an anomoly and they only play these 2 songs once every 6 mo or something, but the fact that they have added them to their playlist is progress for the other CR station (KDBN) as well as DFW radio.
KZPS and Cowards

Well, it seems we have another (or more likely, renamed) coward participating on these blogs...He is going around his blogs deleting comments he is not intelligent enough refute (out of embarrassment I suppose) and then responding to pieces of the deleted comment that he mistakenly thinks he can refute.
KZPS is playing a better and wider selection of classic rock than they ever did as "the classic rock station". Obviously, this would make them a better CR station than before.
It is too bad we have cowards on here that are so weak mentally they feel the need to delete comments, just because they are incapable of letting anyone prove them wrong or let others have the freedom to make up their own mind.
24 Hours of KZPS

Yesterday was a great start for the new KZPS. They played a great mix. They played songs they should have been playing all along, but chose not to.
There are only a couple of changes I would make to the first day's playlist. I'd play more from today's outlaw country movement and avoid the mainstream artists like George Strait.
If anyone from CC or KZPS is watching...Stoney LaRue has more than one song. There is no reason for you to repeat any song for the first week or so. There are a lot more artists to chose from in the outlaw country movement like Reckless Kelly, Cross Canadian Ragweed, Jason Boland, Ray Wylie Hubbard, etc. and some of them really rock.
For anyone who hasn't checked it out yet, they are playing songs like Bob Seger, followed by Hank Williams Jr, followed by ZZ Top, followed by Waylon Jennings, followed by Molly Hatchet, followed by Stoney LaRue, etc. The rock songs are songs they probably haven't played in 3-4 years or played at 3AM when no one was listening.
This morning they seem to be playing 3 rock to 1 country and including crap that sounds like Sugar Ray and some more mainstream country like George Strait.
At this point, my fear is that this is all a scam to boos listenership for the current ratings period and then revert back to the 100 song rotation they have been playing for the last decade+....Only time will tell.
New Radio in DFW...

I was pleasantly surprised this morning to hear new sounds coming out of the radio from 92.5 KZPS.
They have flipped to a classic rock/outlaw country/americana station. I have been wanting a station like this around here since I heard one like it in Abilene a dozen years ago!

How many of you remember the redneck anthem hit by Jerry Jeff Walker called Up Against The Wall, Redneck Mothers?
Well, that tune was penned by Ray Wylie Hubbard, who also penned this little ditty, enjoy:

MONTEREY JACK WOKE UP IN HIS SHACK ON A'MONDAY'
MONTEREY JACK HAD A LITTLE BITTY SNACK OF SOME ELDERBERRY WINE
MONTEREY JACK WALKED DOWN THE TRACK
ALL THE WAY TO OL' HARLEY'S SHACK
STUCK HIS KNIFE IN OL' HARLEY'S BACK
AND THEY SAY THAT'S HOW OL' HARLEY DAVISON DIED
OL' JACK HOFF WAS GETTIN' OFF IN' A DOORWAY
OL' JACK HOFF WAS GETTIN' OFF WITH LITTLE SARA LEA
OL' JACK HOFF WAS GETTIN' OFF
WHEN HE MUMBLED STUMBLED AND STARTED TO COUGH
AND HIS VEIN WENT HARD AND HE WENT SOFT
AND THEY SAY THAT'S HOW OL' JACK HOFF O.G'D
(Spoken : You mean "O.D"
No . . . O.G
What's that man ?
That's when you O.D and say Oh Gee . . ! )
TOM McCANN WAS SITTIN' IN THE SAND BY THE OCEAN
TOM McCANN LOOKED INTO HIS HAND AND FOUND A JELLLY ROLL
TOM McCANN WAS FEELIN' GRAND
ALL THIE GIRLS WERE LICKIN HIS HAND
THEY SAY HE'S A HEEL BUT MAN OMAN
EVERYBODY KNOWS THAT TOM McCANN GOT SOUL
Words & Music by Shel Silverstein
If anyone cares, I went back and added music to the previously posted lyrics.
