GRAYWOLF's Brain Farts

by GRAYWOLF from Lala Land

Last Post 13 days Ago

I was walking out to my vehicle the other day after work and passed this truck with a sticker in the back window that stated:

"If you like your freedom, thank a vet."

That got me to thinking....

"when was the last time our military defended our freedom?"

Iraq II?  ...No, overthrow of a sovereign nation

Afghanistan? ...No, that wasn't about defending our freedom as much as it was (at least billed as) a police action to bring UbL to justice. it ended up being little more than an overthrow of a sovereign nation.

Bosnia?...No, overthrow of a sovereign nation.

Iraq I?...No, fighting someone else's battle

Panama?...No, overthrow of a sovereign nation

Grenada?...No, overthrow of a sovereign nation

Iran?...No, this was a failed attempt to extract hostages

Viet Nam?...No, fighting someone else's battle

Korea?...No, fighting someone else's battle.

WWII?...No, it was retaliation for a provoked attack on Pearl Harbor for the purpose of getting into the European war.

WWI?...No, this was a trade dispute.

Spanish-American?...No that was for Cuba

Civil War?...No, that was for states rights.

Mexican-American?...No, that was a land issue.

War of 1812?...No, this was a trade dispute.

The Revolution? ...Yes, this was for our freedom from British rule.

Well, I don't know anyone that participated in the US Revolution....Not that is alive...

There is an argument to be made that having a powerful standing military is a deterrent to attacks on our freedom from outside forces, but it has done nothing to protect us from attacks on our freedom from within our own government!

Very interesting observation, GW.

And - I agree completely that the threat to our "freedoms" comes from within our own government.

I am wondering how long it will be before someone comments on this (without reading what I actually wrote) and accuse me of hating the US or our military, etc...

IS, did you see the new Rock or Country board?

Not long, I am sure. I don't know diddly about previous wars - not even who they were against. But - I trust your facts. I am NOT a history person.

No - haven't seen it yet - just got on, actually. Headed there now!

I don't know all the details. i had to look at Wiki to find the reasons given for various conflicts. I knew that The Revolutionary War, WWI, WWII and anything since WWII were to for our freedom, but I wasn't sure about some of the others in between...

Great post! Hope those who see it actually read it before making comments.

if you like your freedom , thank the universal lottery system ( sometimes mis-labeled as god ) for just being born where you were born , there is some kind of sick bingo game going on somewhere that when your number is called then you are born in America or you are born in a ditch in the sewers of India , but it's not a pick you make on your own

My Granddad (WWI), Dad (WWII), I (Vietnam), my older Son (Dessert Storm) and my younger Son (Iraqi Freedom) take this opportunity to thank you very much for your kind words.

Obviously, none of us has ever contributed a single thing to our nation and her people.

Thanks to you and your family, KK

IMO without our soldiers we would not be here. What would our life be like if we had never been to war to help others? Would God still bestow blessings on us? By 'going' to war it keeps the war from coming here. Read the Bible, there will never be peace in this world.

God bless our soldiers :)

confused

I know that in school, they always teach that each and everyone of these wars had some kind of impact on our nation. Some was good, some was bad, but, it meant something for someone.

I think this is a great post....but, now I'm confused.......

I think TM is correct, though.

"Obviously, none of us has ever contributed a single thing to our nation and her people."

KK, That is not what I said.

Luv, I didn't say they didn't have an impact, just that they weren't fought for OUR freedom.

"IMO without our soldiers we would not be here."

I agree. Wherever "here" is...

"What would our life be like if we had never been to war to help others?"

A lot more peaceful and secure.

"Would God still bestow blessings on us?"

At least as much as now...

"By 'going' to war it keeps the war from coming here."

Not hardly...meddling in other countries' private affairs is what brings war here. Remember 9/11/1?

That one last sentence of yours, I agree with.

I have always said that.

But, it has always been this way. Other countries helping out other countries.

How could i forget 9-11? It changed the entire dynamics of my family. 9-11 is what has taken my son to Iraq and to Afghanistan and what will probably take him back again. Our soldiers are trying to destroy what they know will destroy us if not for them.

personally i don't agree with your views but i'm certain that many people do.

Luv, "helping" is too vague of a term...There are politicians that would have us believe that we are "helping" other countries by telling them how to run their government, when they didn't ask us, or that overthrowing sovereign nations is "helping" them.

There is no reason for our government to meddle with other countries. If individuals (separately or through charities) and/or private businesses want to help, that is fine, our government needs to stay out of it. That is what creates the hatred that festers into events like Sept 11,2001.

"Our soldiers are trying to destroy what they know will destroy us if not for them."

The ones searching for UbL, yes. Iraq was no threat to us. UbL would not be trying to destroy us if not for our government.

These comments are getting off the subject. This blog is not about the soldiers. They are just doing their jobs. This blog is about the politicization of our military.

The politicians bs'ing us into believing we are interfering in other countries' affairs to "defend our freedom" when it is nothing more than a political pi$$ing contest that is costing the lives of the soldiers.

If left unchecked, things like extremism, genocide and terrorism will most certainly effect our freedoms, so respectfully, I must disagree with your view.

On the subject of our soldiers, I must also disagree with you. My son, who just recently finished his 3rd tour in the Middle Eastern theater and he is at this very moment trying to have his present orders superceeded so that he can do yet another tour in Afganastan. He does so with full knowledge of what he is in for and his reasons are quite clear to him. It has nothing to do with the political pi$$ing contest that I am sure is quite real. It has only to do with standing by his fellow Marines' side and fighting to free ALL people from the evil of terrorism, oppression and brutality. In effect, keeping it from ever reaching us to steal our freedom.

You seem to feel that our soldiers are mindless beings controlled solely by our government, when in fact they are brave and forethinking individuals that understand the implications of leaving such atrocities unchecked; thereby maintaining and protecting our freedoms.

"things like extremism, genocide and terrorism will most certainly effect our freedoms,"

Not quite. Terrorism did not affect our freedoms, but the government's idiotic power grab that followed, most certainly did.

"On the subject of our soldiers, I must also disagree with you."

You didn't disagree with me on anything with regard to our soldiers...Except for the apparent mistaken notion that we would have been attacked if we didn't go out and interfere with the sovereignty of other nations.

"brave and forethinking individuals that understand the implications of leaving such atrocities unchecked;"

So, you are saying they believe what ever they are told to believe?

We were under no threat from Iraq, including our freedoms... Therefore, they can not be fighting for our freedom, since our freedom wasn't in jeopardy.

Let me get this straight.....you think that if we sit idly by within our own little borders, never interfering in anyone else's business, that the atrocities that take place everyday in our big wide world could never have touched us here at home. If we had stayed out of the majority of the conflicts listed above that our freedom in our own country would not have ever been threatened, or as I am understanding you to say, was never threatened?

I like to play devil's advocate. You will often find me using Socratic irony, just for fun. Comments to posts aren't necessarily my position on a subject. I like to try to make people think of the other side of the issue. Don't read anything into my statements. If I didn't state it, I probably didn't mean it that way!
