GALVESTON  --  The Texas Department of State Health Services has issued a warning telling people to limit the amount of fish they eat from Galveston Bay. The warning comes after a two-year study showed elevated levels of toxins in the fish.

This advisory focuses mainly on Chocolate Bay, East Bay, West Bay, Trinity Bay and contiguous waters. Spotted Seatrout and catfish are the major concerns but other species such as red drum, black drum and flounder were said to be safe to eat.

The study showed increased levels of dioxins and polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs, in the two fish.

Adults are asked to limit their consumption of the two fish to no more than one 8-ounce meal a month. Women who are nursing or pregnant and children should not eat the two fish at all.

Long term affects of these toxins can be cancer and reproductive, immune system, developmental and liver problems. There is even a chance of skin rashes, liver damage, and weight loss.

This advisory does not prevent people from catching or possessing these fish. The state says the contaminated fish do not pose a threat to other recreational uses of the bay such as swimming or other contact recreational activities.

Wow...so much for what makes me happy.  I love to fish and speckled trout are one of my fav catches/dishes.  Now, it seems that we can't enjoy that simple pleasure anymore.  And the bad thing for me is that I just fried up a mess of the yummy buggers a 3 weeks ago.  Now I have to wonder if I have injured my entire family with a fish dinner!

I guess I'd better really get into freshwater fishing now!

All that nasty stuff dumped in the Houston ship channel makes it into the Gulf.

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality produces a report on what's on the channel. After looking at the list of toxic chemicals in that water, it makes me not want to go anywhere near the channel or Galveston Bay. But I eventually get over that feeling.

Most of the dioxin is from the priority superfund site located at SW corner of the San Jacinto River where it meets the Hosuton Ship Channel. That site consists of a number of old pits where waste was dumped in the 60's (before the EPA or TCEQ existed). This site was recently discovered as it has been inundated for more than 25 years (subsidence at work). The French Limited and Sikes (upstream) contained dioxins but was cleaned up years ago but the dioxin levels persisted so the EPA and associates went looking for why that was happening and found these pits. There is a report available on this on the EPA website http://www.epa.gov/superfund/sites/npl/nar1773.htm .
Hopefully, a clean up of this site will greatly help the fish populations in the river, channel, and bays.

WHAT? you everyone just discovered this?
come on that water is nasty as has been for years....
Galveston has one of the worst beaches ever.
I quit swimming in that water after I saw Peter Benchleys movie Jaws. Though it is not just the shark scare at the time, the water was filthy even then...LOL.
Though it is a shame isnt it?

Where's greenpeace when you need them?

Offshore fishing is my hubby's fav hobby as well. Thats really too bad, you can still catch 'em though, just throw them back to live out their lives in the disgusting environment we've created for them. What about the gulf shrimp they sell at the grocery store, are those affected too? I wonder sometimes why certian things are on sale....
