Okay, read this article from the AP and pay close attention to the LAST paragraph:

TULSA, Okla. (AP) -- Hundreds gathered in Tulsa, Oklahoma to watch as a crane hauled a 1957 Plymouth Belvedere from a gaping hole in the city's courthouse lawn.

The car spent the last half-century snug in an underground concrete vault that was built to withstand a nuclear attack.

A-bombs aside, the crypt was certainly not waterproof. Event organizers had to pump out several feet of water before unearthing the car.

The Belvedere went underground in 1957 in celebration of Oklahoma's 50 years of statehood.

Also buried with the car were ten gallons of gas -- so future revelers could start 'er up, in case internal combustion engines became obsolete by 2007. That attempt will be made this evening.

The typical contents of a woman's handbag were stashed in the glove compartment, which include lipstick, gum and a bottle of tranquilizers.

Really?! A bottle of tranquilizers were "typical" for women to carry around in 1957?

That's odd? Why was it typical to need tranquilizers? Hmm. Now I would believe it with people these days but back then stress and stuff I wouldn't think was that bad. Not sure.

Believe it or no, I just called my Mother and she said the doctors back then dispensed tranquilizers for everything. Every woman had them and they used them on a regular bases, like vitamins..I guess time where tougher then we thought.

Actually, I think I remember hearing something once about treating women in the 1800s. Everything from PMS to menopause was misunderstood and there were all kinds of elixirs. In fact, I think cocaine was first used to treat what doctors called "hysterics" in women. I guess when you think about our culture in the 1950's it kind of fits the mold.

That's not surprising being that my great grandmother always had her snuff box as so many women did back then as well. Of course women had to go through allot and always had to find better ways of dealing with things. I guess you can say that women have come a very long way with comparison from back then and are more content and equal now on which they are today!

I believe I heard this somewhere..that valium was commonly taken by housewives during that period.

You know the old days....when women stayed home with the kids. (which now nobody can afford).

I think it was a good idea to keep them from going insane with the kids all day..everyday.

I remember when my wallet used to contain different woman's phone #'s.

Now all it contains are the basics.

Valium was the apple of choice in the 50's. I remember the bottle in the kitchen cubbard of my mom's kitchen. It was given to her by the Navy Doctors to help ease heartburn of all things. In the evening it was a Valium and Martini cocktail that ALL the ladies enjoyed before dinner.

Heck didn't you ever wonder why Beaver Cleavers mom always wore high heals, pearls and a dress to clean the house??? She was M..E..L..L..O ! LOL
