If we have evidence that a foreign country is responsible for the deaths of 170 Americans, what should our response be? Bush was quick to go to war in Iraq with faulty intelligence; but now that we have evidence against Iran, we do nothing?!

From Fox News:

Iran has been training Iraqi fighters in Iran on the assembly of deadly roadside bombs known as EFPs, the U.S. military spokesman said on Wednesday.

"We know that they are being in fact manufactured and smuggled into this country, and we know that training does go on in Iran for people to learn how to assemble them and how to employ them. We know that training has gone on as recently as this past month from detainees debriefs," Maj. Gen. William Caldwell, the U.S. military spokesman, said at a weekly briefing.

EFP stands for explosively formed penetrator, deadly roadside bombs that hurl a fist-size lump of molten copper capable of piercing armor.

In January, U.S. officials said at least 170 U.S. soldiers had been killed by EFPs.

Caldwell also said on Wednesday that the U.S. military had evidence that Iranian intelligence agents were active in Iraq in funding, training and arming Shiite militia fighters.

"We also know that training still is being conducted in Iran for insurgent elements from Iraq. We know that as recent as last week from debriefing personnel," he said.

"The do receive training on how to assemble and employ EFPs," Caldwell said, adding that fighters also were trained in how to carry out complex attacks that used explosives followed by assaults with rocket-propelled grenades and small arms.

"There has been training on specialized weapons that are used here in Iraq. And then we do know they receive also training on general tactics in terms of how to take and employ and work what we call a more complex kind of attack where we see multiple types of engagements being used from an explosion to small arms fire to being done in multiple places," Caldwell said.

The general would not say specifically which arm of the Iranian government was doing the training but called the trainers "surrogates" of Iran's intelligence agency.

Caldwell opened the briefing by showing photographs of what he said were Iranian-made mortar rounds, RPG rounds and rockets that were found in Iraq.

I feel what you are saying. Trust me. But it just is not feasible at this point to do anything about Iran. We can complain and [...] to the UN and ask for sanctions and assistance, but we have more than a full plate taking on two third world countries with no formed militia or armed services, and we have the assistance of both nations ruling governments... if we cannot even handle that without facing economic ruin and staring defeat in those wars in the face, how the hell are we going to take on Iran. Simply put, the days of the US being a Superpower are apparently over. We may still be a major force in the world, but if we can't even take care of Iraq and Afganistan, how could we ever take on a China, a Russia, or even North Korea? We couldnt even defeat the North Koreans 54 years ago WITH the UN backing us! I say lets focus on Afganistan, decrease our presence in Iraq, let the Sunni and the Shia duke it out. Its a civil war over there... we cannot stop that now. The Shitte's are in power and the Sunni want that power back. There is no point putting our boys in the middle of another countries civil war. We accomplished all of our goals in Iraq. They have no WMD programs in Iraq anymore, Saddam is out of power, and we established a government. Let the Iraqis duke it out, and if Iran pesters, let them. That is what sovereign nations do. If we had a right to enter Iraq, why doesnt Iran? We had no problem with the Iraqi and Iranians goign to war decades ago? Why not now? Arm the Sunni Iraqis to defend themselfs, let them fight their own civil war. Neither Iraq nor Iran poses t

the US a threat. Let them fight a few years, let the US recover finaincially, get some new leadership in the military, formulate a new strategy, then return if we feel it is necessary. And while we do that, focus on Afganistan and win that war. There is no reason for that war to be in its 5th year. No Reason. That country didn't even know how to operate a machine gun until 25 years ago. Finish that up, and by then perhaps we can deal with Iran or Iraq. We owe the Iraqs no more of a debt.

Walrus-

That's kind of my point. Bush talked tough about the "axis of evil" and "either you're with us or you're against us". But when it comes to N.Korea or Iran, all of a sudden he wants to try diplomacy. And the reason, as you state, is because we simply CAN'T do anything about it. We've squandered money, material and lives in Iraq and now we're impotent.
The reason Chavez, Kim Job Il and Ahmadinejad are so uppity is because they know we have our pants down.
If we had never gone into Iraq we'd be in a much stronger position to confront REAL threats. Hell, Saddam probably would've even HELPED us against Iran!

Hawk-

Yes, you're right, Afghan fighters held off the Soviets. That was a big fear before the US went in. But look what happened, we swept through and ousted the Taliban in a matter of weeks. The tactics and politics were different. But then we took our eyes off the ball and diverted resources to Iraq and that's why we're still battling resurgent insurgents in Afghanistan.

HEY SHOCKEYE!

Russia or the US went back and forth from #1 and #2, neither of us was really a #1 or a #2, Russia just eventually got a leader that was tired of the Cold War and bailed out, it wasn't a matter of who would win the cold war, but who could last longer. And the reason Afganistan held off Russia is what I was refering to when I said they could not even shoot a machine gun 30 years ago. WE went into afganistan and set up the Taliban practically, sold them weapons, taught them how to defeat Russian tactics, and helped finance their war. Afganistan would have been a Soviet state had we not done that, and in all honesty, if the Russians had taken Afganistan they may have not bowed out of the Cold War and we might have had entirely different problems today. Please don't say I am ignorant of facts, I understand that they had a war against Russia. But you don't seem to understand we were fighting there through Proxy... like Iran was fighting against Israel by proxy a year ago... or how China was fighting against the US through proxy in Vietnam, or how Iran is fighting us now through the Iraqi Shittes. Thats what large nations do when they don't want all out war between large powers. Its called modern warfare. You should read a book on it sometime.

Fox, you totally get it, I'm glad most people don't seem to fall into the trap Hawkeye has, you totally understand the big picture. If we had finished up in Afganistan we would be out by now. But we didn't, and we allowed the Taliban to travel across the middle east asking for collections, and now they are back with enough capitol and freshs upplies to draw this war out for a long time if we do not divert mroe troops to that area. There is nothing more we can do in Iraq, we're wasting our time there when we have bigger fish to fry. We can say we "won" simply because we met our objectives. Then we can really win in Afganistan, allow our boys to recoop... but no. Bush is extending their tours of duty by another 3 months, he's sending troops back out there that just got home. I remember when he was elected people said, the troops are going to love Bush as President, he'll do so much for them while all Clinton did was shrink its size. I call Shinanagins! Since he came into power we have had troops who are on their 4th and 5th tours overseas, and now those tours will be longer. And the entire time we are constantly losing troops. How is that going to increase morale? Honestly, I don't think Bush is a horrendous president, I think we've had worse. But sometimes... the decisions he makes... you'd almost think he wants to destroy this nation... like he wants to be the President who bankrupts the US economy and drops us from Superpower status... Personally. i do not want to end up like Russia in the 1990s. But Bush keeps pushing us to that end. HA! Wouldnt that be Ironic if the Tali

Taliban's wars with Superpowers brought down two of them... LOL. Honestly, if things don't improve I'm gonna pack me and my girls up and move to Europe... Europes about the only region that seems on the up n up... But I know doing that would mean the terrorists and Hawkeye would win and be happy.

Seriously though, at what point do you jump ship? Or do you go down with the ship? I just don't want my girls to see riots in the streets, armies marching on DC, martial law, or any of the other things that happened to Russia following the collapse of the Soviet Union.

First THIS;

"Russia or the US went back and forth from #1 and #2, neither of us was really a #1 or a #2, Russia just eventually got a leader that was tired of the Cold War and bailed out, it wasn't a matter of who would win the cold war"

And THEN THIS;

"I just don't want my girls to see riots in the streets, armies marching on DC, martial law, or any of the other things that happened to Russia following the collapse of the Soviet Union."

I KNOW that few pay any attention to you anymore but I find it fascinating that YOU can contradict yourself ON THE SAME PAGE and think that NOBODY'LL notice...

Personally,,YOU give yourself WAY too much credit. ( BIG surprise ) I couldn't care less WHERE you move to..YOU want to go live in a TERRORIST ridden Europe,,,by ALL means go..

First time you bad mouth one of those countries, though, YOU may be in for a surprise...

How did I contradict myself. I jsut talked about 80s Russia and then 90s russia. Obviously you cannot read or you know nothing of the end of the cold war. Mikhail Gorbachev was the leader of the Soviet Union in the late 80s. He had numerous negotiations with Raegan which lead to his end of the great experiment in the Soviet Union (i.e. Socialism) As a result of these actions he was kidnapped and held prisoner in one of his villas for the better part of 2 years. Finally in 1991 Communism actually fell, the BErlin wall well, the steel curtain dissolved and Eastern Europe ebcame independant nations. IN the aftermath of this there were riots in the streets, the economy completely crashed (not that they ever had much of one, they were dependant on UN aid to feed some of their citizens), devout communists were up in arms. It was total mayhem. The Russian Mob took over, corruption became so rampant in the military that the US was afraid their nuclear warheads would be sold to the wrong person. It was mayhem. So as I said. During the cold war we both went back and forth as #1 and #2. Until 1969 we were #2 in my opinion. Landing a man on the moon gave us #1 for awhile, but then Vietnam brought us back to #2, Then Afganistan brought the Russians back to #2... and then finally Mikhail Gorbachev called it quits. He did not have to, it jsut so happened that he came to power and he was tired of socialism in his country. It has takena long time but finally a middle class is emerging in Russia, their economy is stablizing... Putin is a untrustworth piece of ex KGB scum, but at least the n

What surprises me is that Britain isn't attacking Iran after the whole hostage thing with their navy. I seems as though the president of Iran, Mahmoud Imanutjob (that is how Jay Leno said it) wants to go to war with the west. It doesn't seem to matter to him if it's us or Britain or any other western nation.

Yea Europe is the place for you Wally , no Terrorist attacks ever happen there ! Try France there policy of openly supporting Islamic extremists has really really worked out well for them !
I especially liked your other post showing how we really lost WW-II the better decision would have been to “not get involved” . Only be pre-deciding that we “can't win” can we meet the goals that America has set for itself .
More of you need to start helping Wally , with his two daughters and having to work “so hard” just to get by, he only has 18 hours a day to convince America that they must not fight. We need everyone to commit to “the idea” that “We Can't Win” and use everything at your disposal to try and make this happen!

he doesnt want to go to war with the west. He released the prisoners as an act of peace. They violated his waterspace, the british didnt even put up a fight. They had guns, they had a british ship on the other side of the broder that just sat and watched the entire thing. The brits were trying to provoke a war and it didnt work because Iran did the right thing.

Crypto I never said there were no terror attacks in Europe... I said their government and economy are not collapsing due to incompetant leadership in an unjust war. I never said we lost WWII, we won. If it wasnt for WWII we'd never have become a superpower. I'm not saying not fight. I'm saying there is no point to fight in Iraq if we cannot do it properly and for the right reasons. I'm not anti-war, I'm anti the Iraq War. We're there for no reason. And we're losing trillions of dollars due to it.
