I've been meaning to spout off about this for awhile. First, I should say I've never watched American Idol. Nor, any of those other knock-off three-judge-panel shows.

I was channel surfing last night and fell on FOX and they had a montage of all the past Idol winners in their auditions. And they all sounded alike. You know, that soulful, R&B sounding voice. Like they're in a gospel choir.

Now, I'm not saying I don't like R&B or gospel. My point is, why does America only reward that kind of singer? Can you imagine [...] Jagger of the Rolling Stones or Steve Tyler of Aerosmith on the show? Imagine for a moment that those singers were not famous. They're just starting out and they audition for American Idol. They'd be laughed off stage! I just picked 2 singers at random, you can fill in the blank with any established singer...Robert Plant? Prince?

Hasn't anyone noticed the lack of true original music on the radio or Top 20 today? It's all so derivitive. The bubble gum pop of the Kelly Clarksons, Paris Hiltons and Lindsay Lohans. Or the resampling of GOOD music by BAD rap artists who can't come up with an original note to save their grills. (it's a slang term, ask your kids!)

Need proof: How about the fact that these American Idol winners always release albums of cover songs or hire well known song writers to write their stuff?

Alright, give me your list: the good, bad and ugly. Name some artists on the radio/charts today that you like or don't like. Tell me why and whether you agree on my assessment of American Idol.

Okay, I feel better now.

I gotta say, I don't agree with your assessment of American Idol. I definitely don't think they all have a soulful, gospel sound. Look at Carrie Underwood. She's as far away from R&B as you can get. And if you recall, the second runner up that season was Bo Bice...a rocker. I think they have a pretty fair mix of musical style on the show. True, much of it is pop-like, but that's what they're looking for.

I do, however, agree with you on some of the horrible rap music out there today. I cannot believe some of these guys are rich and famous. I think I could even do what they do. It's not even singing. Granted, some of them are talented but they are few and far between.

I love all music, I really do. I was just talking to my co-worker, while listening to country, that I'll switch the radio back and forth between Hip Hop and Rock. The music today really is questionable though. Most of it just has a good beat and that's what makes it popular. I just saw Walk the Line for the first time last night and I loved the music. We don't really have that kind of stuff these days. I still listen to artists such as Billy Joel & Elton John. I guess I'm a fan of just about anything 80's. I know that's not necessarily classic music, but it's better than the crap they put on the radio these days. Thank god for XM!!

It is just music. If you don't like it, don't listen. Obviously someone likes it. This is why they are making millions of dollars. As far as American Idol goes, the people vote so Get over it and listen to what you want to listen to and stop wasting time complaining. Get a life and do something constructive with yourself.

Neshia, you hit the nail on the head. It's sad that artists who don't create their own music get paid millions. And yes, the people vote for the American Idol. That's my point! It's a sad commentary on the musical tastes of the public.

And no, I don't listen to them. Also..something constructive? Uh, do YOU play any instruments? Can YOU read music?

FoxLSA: Amen on the XM! What channels do you listen to? I love 80's music too but have a lot of 90's stuff on my IPod. That seems to be the last decade of original artisits before the invasion of the boy bands.

I listen to the 80s and 90s channels mostly. But I like some of the top 40 stuff on the channels in the twenties. I really switch around a lot. Like I said, I enjoy a little bit of everything.

They need to rename it to American Idiots. Its fits them better. What are some of these people thinking when they get up on that stage and act the way they do? You cant tell that you have no talent?

I very much disagree with the negative statements of American Idol. Yes, there are some with simular voices. Yes, the music-rap-that is out there is in a very negative light and full of horrible things. Music or not, the kids adopt that as an attitude. As an 80's child, I lived the 'We're Not Gonna Take It' and the "Fight for your right, to paaaaaaarty', (though lets make it clear, I did NOT do drugs folks) . Kids adopt music and the words as an attitude. Anyone who denies this doesnt have kids these days and lived under a rock in the era they grew up in.
That said, THe people who get up and get on that stage, talent or no, have a heck of amount of guts. Lets see y'all get up there that criticize. And the new AI, Taylor Hicks, is fantastic and brings the old soul thats been missing back in Music. He is a positive role model, and I see a trend starting in music with his individualism and not afraid to show it attitude.

Music today is so different from the creative years of the 60s/70s etc
they have computers that sample thier voices , computers that play the instruments-John Lennon must be looking down shaking his head..

sunnyrose: very well put. I didn't mean to say the contestants don't have talent, only that I wish there were more original artists. Hicks may have talent but then why can't he write his own songs?

As FloridaBrit says, there doesn't seem to be very much creativity anymore.

I'm sure FoxLSA would agree that the reason XM radio is so enjoyable is because it allows me to discover new and original artists.

American Idol is not for people who truely enjoy music. It is designed for people who need to be told what to like.Last season the commercials kept pimpiig the kids dressed as Gwar but only showed them on one brief montage`.Their scheme worked I wacthed all the try outs to see the kids as Gwar but alas its not the show for me.
