I'd like to get the blogging community's feed-back on this.

St. louis COunty Residents are forced to pay a $12  a month recycling fee on their trash bill even if they never recycle.

Is it just me or does it seem unfair when taxpayers are already having a tough enough time with the existing taxes and fees.  Why have to pay for something they're not even using.

I think it's great that some people want to recycle. That's their right. But what about those who don't want the hassle. They're paying a fee and getting absolutely nothing in return. WHat happens to the money the county gets for doing nothing at all..

I've gotten a number of calls on this issue from irrate homeowers..To date I haven't done anything on it..I'm considering doing something now..and questioning St. Louis County Executive Charlie Dooley.

What do you guys think.

Elliott

I think it's hogwash! What it does is creates more accounts via this monopoly thus more revenues for County.

Twelve bucks a month to recycle - what a ripoff! Most municipalities that get trash hauling contracts get weekly trash pickup for around $10 per month and they get the OPTION for recycling at $4 per month on a 3 month basis.

It's not right to have the decision makers force mandatory recycling down our throats. Oh, wait a minute, it's not forcing us to recycle just to PAY THE BILL!

I understand the reasoning behind one trash hauler picking up trash in a city. It causes less wear and tear on roadways, creates a more service oriented business-city relationship and should save customers about 50% per month.

But recycling - what a waste! Does recycling even help? A box of cereal usually states its from recycled paper products - well, why isn't that price cheaper then?

Stop the monopoly - stop gouging your citizens. Remember, your job Mr. Dooley is an elected position!

i live in hermann, and we buisness owners, whether large are small have to pay a power demand charge, that no one seems to know what it is, but my total shop is as big as my livingroom and kitchen, and my last dlectic bill was 168... the power demand charge was 83, half the bill, plus i can get all my trash at the shop in one trash bag a week, at home i have atleast 3 trash bags a week, its 11 dollars for trash pick up at home and its 20 dollars for trash pick up at the shop, for them to pick up one bag... idk, its crazy

I wonder if people made the same argument when laws were passed preventing people from burning their trash? "Why should I have to pay to have my trash hauled away when I've been burning it in my back yard for years??" Hmm.

Actually, I never felt compelled to recycle, but this is REALLY EASY. I can't figure what all the fuss is--my trash bill doesn't appear to be that different than it was before we had recycling. In my neighborhood, it means a big decrease in the trash truck parade, which I like a lot. Since we got our big recycling can (which, c'mon folks, is NOT hard to wheel to the street--def not as hard as all those small trash cans you used to use), we have a LOT LOT LOT less trash in the regular can. Once a week is going to be plenty often for regular trash pickup.

I think this is a whole lot of hooha over nothing. TONS of bigger problems out there. Let's suck it up and move on, guys.

If those garbage companies can bid low enough and guarantee savings for each family then sign them up. I don't agree with forcing people to recycle since it still hasn't been proven as cost effective and environmentally sound. I have seen it on our bill as an option and you have to sign up for at least six months at a time.

Elliott - while you're looking at this mess, take a look at campaign contributions made by the contractors who got the hauling agreements to Dooley and to the County Council members that voted for this scam. You'll probably have to match names of individual donors to these companies as the gifts will be in the names of individuals and not the hauling companies themselves.

I think you'll find a direct correlation to donations and elected officials.

Get rid of the filth. Dooley is an elected official and if you don't like him, vote him out.

As for contributions, yeah they go far and deep. Wasn't this a RFP project and all bids were evaluated then one company approved?

A monopolized trash hauling contract isn't the worst case scenario. You have to guarantee all residents that they are saving lots of money per year on the contract.

As for forced recycling, that's nonsense. Recycling should be only an option.

Hey Elliot - there is forced recycling in O'Fallon, MO too!! Now, what I believe would be fair is to rebate back 50% of the recycling fee to the residents & businesses. Instead, greedy O'Fallon takes it ALL. By ALL, I mean not only do they charge for recycling, they also reap the profits from the recycling. And PLEEEZE, don't tell me that they keep those profits to pay for the trucks, fuel, salaries etc. What a bunch of CRAP!!!! And this is supposed to be looked upon as we're being good citizens? Give me a break. You ought to check out their books - seems that no one has been able to find exactly where this money goes. Or maybe I just haven't heard, but it sure is a rip-off.

Elliott- I think this is a great idea. I am for recycling! If you don't then you should pay. Think of our children's futures. What we do today will make it better for tomorrow. If you are to lazy to recycle tuff! That just shows how selfish people are!

Mr mincooper what does recycling really do for us? It doesn't prevent trees from being cut down there are thousands rolled over each day. It does not lower our products prices because it cost the company less money to manufacture box. Those profits go to executives. Does recycling really amount to anything more that political bs?

I am totally for recycling. What I have issue with is that it is forced and the city/county receive the benefits and it doesn't make its way back to the initial contributors! Now, those who don't recycle, then they should be assessed a non-recycling fee as they are contributing to the landfill.

I have recycled for years and I will continue but I don't use the curb service and hate that I pay for it. I put my can of regular garbage (is there irregular garbage?) once every two weeks. With four kids that should give you some idea of what doesn't go in the trash.

I just don't think it has motivated anyone to recycle, I think it is just taking money from residents.

Execoser999-it does a lot. Look at where we are and were we were. More and more companies are using less trees to produce magazines and catalogs. More and more companies are putting their catalogs online. I work for a retailer and am seeing more and more people turn down a bag or refuse a catalog. It is a process that takes time and it is making changes, if we don't force society to reconize this, then one day there will not be anything left for future generations to use.

My position is easy recycling may be a great and noble thing. If you want to do that fine.
But don't force everyone else to pay for a service they're not using. What happens to all the extra money the county gets for doing nothing? Who gets that? The county could end up with a potential windfall from this deal.
I think you get folks to recycle by selling the idea on it's merits, not forcing them.

Recycling should be free and people should be charged by weight for the amount of trash they generate. I don't generate much trash because I recycle almost everything. Why should I have to pay the same trash hauling price for one bag as another family for 3 trash cans as well as a bunch of other junk.
