Cho...the VIrgina Tech Campus massacre gunman....is the media giving him too much recognition for his actions? Is showing his video, and pictures on television justified in the name of braodcast journalism?  Are we glorifying this guy because there is video and pics of him to show...is it right?  Do you want to see it?  And if so, why should you?  Is there anything to gain from it?  Could we be inadvertently encouraging another "Cho" out there to create his own massacre?  WHAT DO YOU THINK?? Today, without saying names...a LAPD officer and I discussed the case...he brought up an interersting point...he wonders why the country does not focus on the real issue behind these types of killings...and that is---mental health!  If Cho was a mental health patient, where was the healthcare system to catch him? Shouldn't they be involved in the "solution"?? Again, whatdo you think...patiently waiting... EE. :)

Ok...you can stop waiting since I'll start this thing off.

I'm interested in simply seeing the video due to curiosity. I wanted to know what made this dude tick and why he did what he did and that's why I found the video interesting.

But I think that nobody really figured that this kid was ill enough mentally to do something like this. I mean, how often do you walk away from someone and honestly think that they're capable of being a mass murderer? It's tough to arrest someone before a crime is committed.

I don't think there is anything that can be done to prevent this sort of thing. Tightening gun laws wouldn't have saved lives here, he met all of the qualifications required to buy a gun. So the sad thing is that I don't foresee any law, or any situation that could have prevented this.

Yes I'm interested in seeing it! I'm just nosey like that. Like ddain I want to know what made this dude tick too. I think that the pictures and video playing over and over was a little too much. I just kept watching because I felt like maybe they were going to give more information.

I think if the girls who accused him of stalking pressed charges against him, the outcome may have been different. Because he would have been in the system. Maybe they would have kept an eye on him, maybe he would have been evaluated and maybe now he would have been in a mental institution.

Bottom line is we have to step up, be proactive and press charges against these people. Let the DA decide which cases to through out. (Sorry for rambling) =)

i have to agree totally with my buddy ddain. for some reason he just always seems to read my mind.

the only difference is that i already knew why he did this before seeing the actual video. he was picked on and tormented by bullies his whole life for being a little different. no one understood him as a person, and he felt cut off from the world.

the only way i could see this from ever happening is if everyone was a little nicer to one another. sometimes it's the little things that mean so much to a person. i don't think this kid had many moments in his life like that. personally, i don't think of this cho as a bad person, just misunderstood. a person that need a few good friends by his side. maybe that would have made a difference.

i'm glad that you got my e-mail, and i'm blushing too about the "life" part. i ment it as a friendship, maybe even more (a guy could only dream, can't he?).

well this was a good topic to pick. i'm sure most have a opinion about this whole mess. at least your keeping your record straight on going from a serious topic to a lighter one and back.

Ciao Amore,

It is terribly sad that this tragedy happened. I don't think the victims' families appreciate that the video is being aired. I think that it adds salt to the wound. It should, however, be shared with school psychologists, law enforcement, and other mental healthcare professionals to study and understand signs and symptoms to prevent something like this happening again.

Ci vediamo,

Jean-Emmanuel

I AGREE WITH DDAIN, JUST CURIOUS. AND LIKE MEANMYGIRLS, I KEPT HOPING THEY WOULD GIVE A LITTLE MORE INFO. NO ABOUT THE PHYSCHO THAT DID IT, BUT THE FAMILIES. AND MORESO, WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED FOR 2 HOURS AFTER HE ALREADY KILLED TWO PEOPLE. I TRULY BELIEVE IN THE DEPTH OF MY SOUL THAT IF THE CORRECT ACTIONS HAD BEEN TAKEN, THOSE OTHER 31 PEOPLE WOULD BE WITH US TODAY??? I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW MORE ABOUT THE TIME LINE. I AM PRETTY SURE THAT THERE WAS A 911 CALL MADE AFTER THE FIRST SHOOTING, WASNT THERE??? IM LOST, SICKENED, AND VERY ANGRY.

AS FAR A GUN LAWS????????? PLEASE!!! GUNS DONT KILL PEOPLE, PEOPLE KILL PEOPLE. WE SHOULDNT WORRY SO MUCH ABOUT GUN LAWS AND FOCUS MORE ON WHO IS IN OUR COUNTRY????? AND WHY??? TRY GETTING ACROSS THE CANADIAN BORDER FOR A QUICK VISIT. WONT HAPPEN

I think that enough has been said about what transpired. I'm tired of seeing footage of the officers running to the buildings arms drawn. This could be the spark to light the fire. What I mean is that this continuing coverage could only give ideas to bullied students out there watching. I work at a high school doing security and I am very attentive to the students with behavior problems. My background of previous employment trained me well. I work with the kids to help them not put them down. This is my approach and it works great.

i think to much coverage does cause a risk of a copycat , people want to get famous , don't ask me why , the death of all those people is just so heartbreaking , i just can;t for the life of me understand how someone can do such a evil thing , it sickens me and being a mother to four kids and three are teenagers that is my worst fear wene i send them off to school each morning , will this happen at there school , these days anything is possible , there wwere warning signs and no one did anything about it , he was harassing young woman , his writing were disturbing , when a red flag goes up everyone should listen ,in school you now have to learn not just reading , writing , and arithmatic , you have to know survival skills to know what to do if a tragedy comes knocking at your school someday , we have our troops fighting the war with iraq , who are we gonna get to fight the war on violence right here at home , on our streets , in our schools ......breaks my heart :(

I think you finally found an angle on this crazy guy's actions that is defensible and responsible...talk the issues and do not show the video or the pictures that the media have grabbed onto for sensationalism...it is indefensible for these articles to be used to feed minor curiosity . Instead , let's use our brains and seek out ways to benefit society as reporters and news networks. Not to reward a killer's actions by providing an outlet for his manifesto and rantings..We all have the obligation to ourselves and to society to find ways to learn from this horrible loss of life...

Hello all...

Ok, ddain many say the same, maybe there are no laws to prevent this from happening...many I have heard from recently say it's pointless because as SJRSBABYGIRL pointed out.. guns kill people because people use them for that purpose. Samo...ddain reads your mind huh :)...well I must say you have a great point about being kinder and how its the litle things in life that make a difference. I see it all the time in my line of work.. one example... I wonder why people have to ignore the homeless person sitting on the street begging for money..instead just give away a smile, maybe a dollar, and or say sorry don't have the money or don't feel I should give you the money but give an encouraging smile. You gotta figure we are all a product of our own experiences and that is what shapes us. For some, life has been super kind and others, not so much. It's not Prince Charles' fault he was born into royalty, he had no say...all that should be taken from this is that being kind should not be difficult to do. In fact,I would argue you get more from giving freely a random act of kindness as opposed to being on the receiving end. Ok, meandmygirls now I am rambling (hahaha) it's easy to do, huh?
Jeano, the salt to their wounds remark was right on...what about this NBC backlash about airing the stuff..hey let's face it all the networks ran with it at the end of the day. Jean, good point, law enforcement, school psychs etc, they should see the material in its entirety...memoryjoe, it is very sad and prayer is all we can give these families now...ediefella, soo true, p

Well I just think its horrible that NBC decided to show these videos they not only helped him achieve what he wanted to achive but they also showed others that might be in the situation of this crazed person that they too could become infamous if they decide to step over the line and respond in such a way to depression and social rejection.By the way your great Elizabeth!!

i think its disgusting that NBC decided to show these videos...why didn't they just air a 5 month old baby getting rapped?! everyone saw that video, everyone...including young kids who will say "hey that guy is on tv, he looks soo cool with those though guns...i want to do it too" but you know what, I hope it was worth it for them...whatever it was they were trying to accomplish by airing it.

Hey Elizabeth, glad to see you have your own blog. It's well deserved and I know you have a lot of great things to say! Thus, I'll be checking in weekly.

In regards to Cho, not only was mental health an issue but his family should've played a role in taking care of his mental health issue. Unfortunately, I have had situations with friends and family of friends that have had schizophrenic issues and family in almost all cases saved these individuals from damaging themselves. It was only when pleads and referrals from society and friends told the family members to please take care of their loved ones did the family members take the illness seriously.

We must all work as a society together; because we feel someone's culture is different than ours does not make them(whomever) different human beings and mental illness is definitely a disease that strikes a lot of us and can get worse if we condone the wrong behaviours to keep taking place. I feel this was the case with Cho, as an Asian-American, I think people did not want to be intrusive, they felt a bit odd approaching him not only because of his erratic behaviour but because of his ethniticty. Just my 2 cents.

Cheers!

Well, I deem what happened is trajic regardless of how it came to happen, it just simply shouldn't have happened. As far as showing the video... I think it should have been aired and perhaps still should, part of the reason things like this happen is because we as a society cringe at images like this and would rather turn away and let others deal with it. But if we all faced it, we'd probably have a better understanding of it. I mean, c'mon... the 9/11 incident was far more disastrous (not saying this wasn't) where thousands were killed and still to this day those images are being aired and even movies made about it, and people actually payed to them. It's not the videos that create copycats.. you don't see anyone purpously running airplanes into buildings cause of it. A copycat is just looking for attention and since they can't think for themselves, they'll use anything to get it, wether they saw it on video or just heard it on the radio.

I really don't believe that he did this because he was picked on. He probably was looked at differently because of his behavior, but not because of his looks or anything. He had mental issues, for example, they interviewed his family back in Korea and one aunt said that he was always very quiet, some of his family even believed that he was retarded or some thought he was mute because he never talked, never responded to them. He had a girlfriend here, was a senior at V. Tech.. so he wasn't dumb, he demonstrated his hatred towards the rich but killed just anyone.. not just the rich but of all economic stature. He had been instatutionalized before, had prior stalking charges, and he's gonna try to blame it on people picking on him? C'mon... you mean to say his family back in Korea picked on him too that's why he didn't talk to them? If your neighborhood had someone like him on you neighborhood watch program, I guarantee that no one would let their kids around him or associate that much with him... on the contrary.. he would be avoided. This is why I deem the video should be aired, it gives us a chance to look at someone or something that we normally don't see on a day to day basis and allows us to further understand suttle signs that may make a larger than life impact.

Hi everybody--

So I realized recently after writing a dissertation on the subject matter, this blog page can't take too much content...hence the cut off response on my part where my blog gets cut off at p...

Anyway, Memoryjoe I see your concern for copycats..since we last spoke, there have been scares. You being a parent are in the right to have legitimate concerns about your child's welfare while at school, or even while playing outside on our neighborhood streets.
Fixitmilw...thank you, I thank you for your comments and agree people have to use their minds, brainstorm...I really believe society as a whole could do so much to end violence, poverty, and war. As you pointed out, it's important to strategize together...remember the saying, "two heads think better than one". Joorej5-- thank you for the compliment and for expressing your frustration. You are not alone, a lot of people have come up to me while I am reporting expressing similar concerns. Watching that video, made many of us ponder whether it was necessary for everyone to watch. SM88-- thank you as well for your comment...clearly you are angered, did you write to NBC about it? Just curious...

Hola guapo!!!

OMG...I soo miss you! We must catch up soon!
Thanks for that in depth response to my question. I think you are absolutely right about family involvement, and the fact that his cultural background may have played a role as to why some professionals probably did more no to intervene with Cho..?? Your 2 cents are priceless, thank you! Hope the film biz is going well!

GLO...

Ok, I hear you as well...and yes people don't always commit crimes to be "copycats"..and yes Cho was not dumb, as you point out, he did get accepted at Virginia Tech! But, as far as continuing airing footage of Cho waving his weapons and threatening people...I do not see it offering any continued value. Ok, we saw it a couple of times, fine..to air it anymore becomes "sensationalism tv". Thank you for sharing your thoughts!! By the way, have you sent any comments to NBC commending them of their actions?

Hey Elizabeth

I would have emailed this to you but don't know your email, so I hope you don't mind me borrowing your blog to send my call for making a difference :) it is kind of long so I am sure it will take more then one post.

Anyone who knows me well, knows that children and how they are care for has always been something very important to me

Children are our biggest investment into the future of our world. Each upcoming generation takes on the responsibility of being the ones to guide our nation. They will be the caretakers of the world...Our doctors, lawyers, teachers, politicians, firemen and women, police officers, plumbers, electricians , engineers, scientist, writers...they will be our everything that keeps things running..we will get back exactly what we invest in them.

As one person we think "what can I do? that can really make a difference?"...and I say a lot.

As a Clay fan I can tell you what made me one, and how I am proud to see him use his voice to reach out to the masses...and yes he has his celebrity to help him reach many...but like Clay, we also have a voice, we just must find other vehicles to deliver our message...to sing our own song :) I described Clay words of "I want to make a difference" spoken on American Idol as being like a drop in a quiet still pond...that one drop starts a ripple effect from one end of the pond to the other

I would like to use the internet via myspace , emails, blogs yes even fan boards to be that drop in the pond, and I hope you will all join me.

continued...

I want to start with our Schools...our schools are underfunded, and I think we can all agree on that. We can wait until the cows come home for our government to change that, but while we do, many children and teachers are suffering, our most important investment is not being tended to..we are waiting for someone else to fix it.

Have you ever been to back to school night?..do you know that most teachers reach into their own pockets to pay for all the nice things you see around the room...a pleasant working environment is important...and our children in effect are going to work everyday to learn to be productive human beings..to be the leaders and caretakers of our world.

Here is how I am hoping you can help...go to schools in your area and ask the teachers what they need for their classrooms...you would be surprised at what they may ask for...it could be as simple as some pencils, paper, tissue etc...it may be a helping hand with making copies, or reading to the class, grading papers..busy work that sometimes takes away from a teacher being able to give some one on one time to a student who needs help...find out what you can do as one person to help and ask others to do the same...be that drop in the pond. Also one other big thing that can do to make a difference...teach our children grandchildren and others children to be kind to others, that alone will make a difference in our schools and our future

Here goes my first drop...I hope you will join me.

Leslie
