How to buy American -- Douglas ChickWith all of our dollars being sent away to other countries in our “Global Economy”, how do we purchase merchandise and keep the money here at home? Buy American! But buying American isn’t as easy as we might think, particularly when no one really knows which foreign entity, or emirates owns which corporation?

One way is to buy used. If you like a Japanese or German car, but do what your money to be sent back to Japan or Germany, you can buy a used car and keep the money in an local American economy. I just saw a 2 year old 56K Infiniti for 25 thousand dollars. 24 months old and it already lost more than half of its value. Buying a new car might help a foreign economy, but it is killing ours.

What about a good old fashion neighborhood garage sales? Ebay, Craigslist, and your local newspaper’s want ads is also a good way to keep your money locally.

Sending our hard earned money away to another country means never seeing it again.

Buying locally or purchasing used items locally means keeping your money local and giving you a better chance at getting it back one day.

Good advice. You may like to know I own a 94 Mercury. I've had it for 4 years. Still running as good as the day I bought it. I don't know where the parts I've added to it come from. Like the radiator and hoses and that pesky harmonic balance which had the bolt hole so warn, I had to get out and tighten it up constantly. Got to keep it going so I keep fixing whatever breaks. Got the car cheap, and I've only put about $300 for all the repairs. I don't count the tune ups as repairs. Just something you do for an object you love. Tires are another thing. I wonder if they were Made in America? Gas mileage is fairly good, too.

Good post Doug. I do those things.
Never buy a NEW car.
Go Garage Saling.
Go to Thrift Stores.

Caviot here... Go to the bank and try to get a loan for a used car and see what percentage you get, or the trouble you have vs. the new car financing available. Show me where you can get zero percent on a used car....

Lets also remember that KIA are Dodge, Chevy is carring SAAB, and Toyota has plants right here in America supporting domestic employment.
You can't associate "buy American" like they did back in the 70s anymore. Besides, "buy American" also means "support Unions" and I'm not planning on purchasing an inflated priced domestic car simply because we have to support more retired workers from a UAW ran plant!

Its the same problem America is having with Social Security except in the auto industry it already hit us. GM almost went under because there are more people retired to pay than actual workers, and it came full circle.

Want to stop seeing American work go overseas? Tell your liberal friends that raising capital gains and corporate taxes certainly isn't the answer! You think its bad now, you wait until Obama doubles it! Wait until Corporate taxes are hit harder and justified by the weak "Big Oil" profit scam the left keeps throwing at us.

I recomend you read up on MACRO economics before buying into the left wing antics here.

You sure do make a lot of arguments protecting the foreign investment of America. The give away of America by Washington is nothing less than treasonous. I would even go as far to say that a guy like you will never have to worry about capital gains. You should worry about your children future, not the trust funds of children; your kids will undoubtedly serve.

Fair tax. Domestic manufacturing will return to america along with foreign manufactures to take advantage of the worlds best tax haven.

Abunai sez- "Should we throw Toyota out of the country?"

Yes.

"Would ya like to know WHY the Japanese actually attacked us in Pearl Harbor?"

Oh yes, please enlighten us. Then please tell us all about Bataan, Nanking and Tanoura Beach, OK?

Abunai, you need to learn the art of “summing up”! Your comments are too long. Rant on your own blogs. I’m going to clear out some of your free speech to make room for others.

In order to avoid sending our money to foreign countries people could also stop taking prescriptions drugs. According to a recent report by the Public Citizen Health Research Group, in FY 2007 China had 714 drug producing establishments and India had 410 that were subject to FDA inspections. American drug companies are sure doing well.

Americans could also stop investing in foreign markets even though the GDP growth in many developing countries exceeds ours.

All foreign subsidiaries of American corporations should also be closed and relocated to the U.S.

BTW, I couldn't help but notice that on the day of Sen. Kennedy's brain tumor being announced, the stock market fell considerably.

Kennedy affecting the stock market by bad news? Maybe it was the opposite, people leaving and having a few beers to celebrate his finally leaving.

Abunai - You have a choice to work for a union or not, you don't want to work for one that's great it's your choice. BUT I also know people who live in WA (A pro Union state) making decent wages supporting their families well and having great benefits. I know people in Florida doing the same job making a THIRD what the same man makes in WA. Rent is cheaper in WA and Food is about the same so justify paying a third the wage and no benefits? Unions protect workers from being abused by corporations to greedy to share their profits with those that provide the backbone to earn them.

Unions are a choice for each worker and your comment about supporting retired union workers are ludicrous! They payed their dues to earn that retirement check and if you payed dues every month for 30 years sometimes more you would expect that benefit too.

I say boycott anything from China myself. I can never see buying goods from a country that portrays us as a villain and enemy. You can look at the label and find whats made here and not made here.

Why boycott China? Because we still have the manufacturing infrastructure to produce enough to support the American economy, it's just more profitable for AMERICAN CORPORATIONS to send jobs over sees then sell the goods back to us. Shame on anyone that supports that mentality.

Abunai,I'll bet you that Fox doesn't have union workers. I get blocked for stupid reasons but then again I blasted Tom Sussi on the blood blog and they didn't cut that YET. In my humble opinion Tom Sussie is a jerk. opposite opinions are welcome.

Dear Chicken; Although I think you play with your mouse (computer) too much to think straight, I welcome your ignorant comparison to having a 'big mouth' on a blog. Even Homer Simpson makes fun of Fox on Fox. The Simpsons in case you haven't discovered TV yet.

Actually I thought Abunai's comments were well thought out and accurate. In addition to his excellent points I would love to buy American however even Harley Davidson has sold out. Try and buy anything from them that doesn't come from over seas.

Abunai, toyota may have plants here, but it is for assembly only, not one of the components are made here...the assembly of all the parts is the cheap part of car building. so no matter what wool toyota has pulled over on nascar, they wont pull it over on me. Plus the japanese dont make a car I fit in, even their "full size trucks" may be full size in japan...but not here

Abunai is a good thinker. Unfortunately he doesn't get out very much and seems to be lost in the seventies, but some of us are working to change that. He seems to be coming around a bit and with a little more support the prognosis is favorable.

Oh please shadows.. you give your moderate self too much credit.

So it went from insults on my family and children to all out deleting my posts, and then not being man enough give the real reason.

sabaii had to come in and shake the tree for Chicken to finally confess he is trying to censore opposing view under the name of "big mouths."
I noticed you didn't bring forth any evidence to my facts being in error however.

Oryguncb, responded with more FACTS to the work being assembly plants and not parts manufacturing. He is correct.

So DC, I guess we now have dragged your closet liberal status out into the open...

Folks this is the new MO of liberals, to bring forth questions based in facts that are incorrect to begin with. NBC just got caught editing an interview with the President where he called them on it, and they too edited it out for propaganda.
