It started with 2 startled kids yelling "Somebody is trying to break in the house". 6AM Sunday morning...Nash had his friend Chaise sleeping over. The kids burst in our room (that was fine it was waaaaay too early for anything to be going on in there.) They were scared. They had reason to be. It wasn't a thief it was the fire. Chaise's dad was trying to wake us up. He didn't want to just yell FIRE!!! But why not...our Church was burning, the neighborhood would be next..

We grabbed the kids, the cat, the dog , the geckos and pictures and ran. We watched the fire from the parking lot at Duke's ( a Malibu restaurant I have to plug because they fed us for days).

Nash cried when I told him about our church. I was trying so hard not to cry because I didn't want to scare him but when he started...I started. Malibu Presbyterian Church has been at the heart of our lives ( between Sunday service, Bible study, Preschool, meetings..I think I spend more time there than at home). "THINGS WE LOST IN THE FIRE" is so much more than a movie title now. I know a Church is just a building but it's a building I loved.

We also lost a member of the family (although not one I loved). We...okay...Nash lost one of his pet geckos. Lemon (all our pets have food names Milky Way the dog, Oatmeal the cat, Banana and Lemon the geckos) was lost in my car. Lemon may still be in there (I fear if...he/she...we never knew...if it is still there I will know soon enough!) So we dealt with the fear and the sorrow..and the mess. I ripped up everything in my car looking for the gecko. I dropped and broke a bunch of the frames I had put in my car to save. It was a long smoky day but we got to go home.

Monday morning 5am...FIRE!!!!!!AGAIN!!! When I woke up I could see it from my window...that I really don't care for. Again we ran...dog,cat and one gecko. Monday was so much worse. The fire was all around our house and the homes of the people I love. My husband (David Goldstein from CBS2) and I worked the story together. We haven't done that since we were both news reporters in NY. Well he worked the story, I mostly got on TV and tried not to cry.

I am so thankful. Our house is fine. The only house to burn nearby is a house David and I almost bought. Nash and I made muffins for the fireman. I burned them. I have decided to say thank you by not giving them the muffins.

If your ending is not yet a happy one you have my prayers. And honestly I am sorry I think I was a bit giddy on TV today . Maybe it's the relief.. In my house we are all home...well all except the gecko.

Wow, let me be the first to say that I am so glad you and family are ok (Lemon, well...). I watched you Monday (was it?? who knows anymore) and when your husband walked by, it must have been really weird. I'm down here in OC and am okay, presently. Sick from the smoke and always trying to find out if the Trabuco/Santiago/Lake Forest fire is getting closer.

I admired your giddyness, it was normal, which felt good. A church is only a building and the congregation is the life. Broken pictures to find your son's silly gecko is what is pure in your heart, a mother's love. We will clean out stinky turtle aquariums or loose a creature in our car if we have to. That's all that really matters. Bless you, and now I have your sexy voice.

Glad you, your family and house are safe. Sorry about the gecko... lizards live for a while without food or water so he might still turn up... drive careful, should he startle you.
Sometimes people in the blog world give you a hard time, but I like you. You seem like a good person. Sometimes you are a bit goofy, but still a good person. You handled yourself really well, while on the air, during the fire that threatened your house. Take care.

Dorothy,

I'm just glad that you, David, Nash, and his friend Chaise all made it through the fire. Just so you know, I work for radio station KBRT, and my colleague Paul McGuire also went through the fire scare this past week. Also, our station engineer had to deal with the Catalina fire this past summer. Just so you know, Paul interviewed Dr. Jack Hayford recently, and Dr. Hayford said some positive things about Malibu Presbyterian Church. I hope everybody in the congregation gets through this, and when the church gets rebuilt, it goes on even stronger.

Now about blogger Paul_D: What you said was COLD AND CRUEL...shame on you!

Dorothy, your reactions are completely normal, so don't worry about how you were on air. Any sane viewer will understand what you went through. As for those foolish mean spirited people who are trying to bring you down, don't worry, God will deal severely with them. I don't say this with any pleasure either; I know that God doesn't take any pleasure in doing this, and He doesn't like it when someone laughs at another's misfortune.

You take care now!

Please don't listen to the mean people with their shriveled heart and soul. You are beautiful to so many more than them. Even my husband and son (23 yr old son) told me, at separate times, without knowing the others opinion, that you are the prettiest one on the show. So if a 23 yr old thinks you are attractive... you must be. Good luck with all the rebuilding of your church and community. The sane people love ya!

well it's good to know your house didnt burn down and your family is alright. as for the church burning down, well it's a loss, but look at it this way. now you and your church friends can all help rebuild it together. then when it's completed, you can honestly say, that it's not just a building, but it's a home for you and your friends made out of love. a home dedicated to the lord.

Nash cried and then made muffins. I wish Daddy David were to have more of a hand in raising young Nash than Dorothy seems to have or this kid is headed for a nice little condo in West Hollywood with his playmate Chaise.

Dorothy, believe it or not, just wanted to say when I caught you on the Fox news cast, I said a prayer for your church and your family that you guys would be ok. Nobody should have to face so many evils ever!

OMG! Dorothy is cool! but to suggest Lauren "Light Weight" as a tv personality who would suck in viewers? absolutely ridiculous. Lauren is pathetic. I can understand her getting an internship at KCOP but hiring her is weird. there are many attractive, brilliant women out of Cal Berkeley who can brighen my mornings. Sanchez is empty headed and somewhat grotesque. I see nothing appealing about her aside from her ability to read. Sanchez is a good reader.

Hi Dorothy - I'm glad you and the family faired well throughout this ordeal. It's so sad to see those who did lose everything. My prayers go out to all.

In regards to the people with negative, ignorant comments - just DELETE them or have the webmasters delete them. They're totally uncalled for. It's the good people who lose their homes in fires and the scumbags like some of these bloggers who go through life riding the coattails of others... oh if only the tables would turn.
