Who in their right mind would ever want to be President of the United States? Just think about it, you really can’t do a damn thing that might actually accomplish something. You can make recommendations but not laws, you can send up a budget but you can’t ratify it. You can veto but not adjust a bill to make it palatable. Every step you make is under the scrutiny of the press and Congress.

You may hold the most prestigious job in the world but you are at the mercy of the 545 professional politicians in the House and Senate. Your job can not last more than eight years but the people who control all you do have unlimited terms. You will take the blame for everything imaginable and the people who are actually in control will skate along to the music and never face the consequences of their actions. If you listen to the politicians you would almost be convinced that the economy, the price of gas and the housing crisis were all of your making.

The fact that we didn’t have these crisis’s until after the last election when the House and Senate was remade in the form of Pelosi and Reid does not register with the general public. No, you’re to blame Mr. President, you must have purposely caused the banks to get greedy and take those bad loans. You must have purposely caused India and China to become huge users of oil to make the barrel prices go up. You must have drugged the water in the House and Senate to get them to believe there was cause to go into Iraq.

Surely it must be your fault that the schools of America are breeding grounds for violence and sex. You must be responsible for the dreadful movies our kids watch and the violent computer games they play each day. I’m sure that the professional politicians must be right when they tell us what a terrible leader you are. I’m sure they wouldn’t pass the buck if it weren’t true.

No, I wouldn’t be President for all the tea in China. Just think an athlete going into the pro’s in almost any major sport will make an average of several million dollars a year and do what ever he wants with really no liability or responsibility to his fans or the public. The President of these United States has the weight of the world on his shoulders and only makes a few hundred thousand a year. Gosh, is something amiss here?

And that’s my opinion,
Don

Don Politico...

Now I feel very sad that I didn't really know most of what you said to be the case. I'm sure at one time I knew some of it but for the most part I'm suprised at my own ignorance of Presidential powers.

I guess that's why I liked being a clerk in the Army. The officers and NCO's had a saying that poop only rolls down hill... But the secret to that was knowing how to pass the buck. As in that song in that wonderful movie "White Christmas"

Oh gee... I wish I were back in the Army
the Army wasn't really bad at all
When you get stuck, you're never outta luck
there's always someone higher up where you can pass the buck
Oh gee! I wish I were back in the Army

Don...it's all about the ego. We all know the job doesn't pay well, but when you think about, George Bush is perhaps the most powerful man in the world. If that doesn't stroke your ego, nothing will.

Yeah, it's a thankless job, but think about if you do manage to accomplish a few good things, your name will be in the history as doing such, and that's forever.

Well the Presidnet actually does have responsibilities as well as powers. He can appoint cabinet members, including Supreme Court Justices and depending on which party has control, tilt the high court, an oversight I believe by the founders. Then the President also has the real power in the Veto pen. He can kill bills left and right and unless there is enough congressional or Senate members to over ride him, the bill is at his or her mercy. He is the Commander and Chief not only of the Federal military, but thanks to terror laws now the local paramilitaries too, which gives the President a virtual dictatorship, and finally, depending on the President's strength, he is an interface with foreign leaders and can cause great things or very, very bad things with foreign governments as witnessed in the last 8 years.

Glad you guys were listening. Yes the president can appoint a cabinet if he has control over congress. Yes he can appoint judges if he controls congress. Yes he can veto bad bills if he controls congress. It still is in the power of 545 people, professional politicians all who have the power. Face it, until we make them accountable to the people we will always have political conflict to the point of not serving those who they represent.

I agree, Don, it is the power of those 545 people (professional politicians) who are beholden to corporate America that holds all of us hostage and no vote will change that fact. The corruption has reached unprecedented heights at all levels of government, starting at cities and all the way up!Thomas Jefferson said "the tree of liberty is often nurtured by the blood of it's patrons"....I think the time has come to honor his words.

Hey olgrama how are ya? Yes I love the {professional politicians}. This is going to take a very long time to fix something that is so messed up. But it can be done just hope my Grandkids benefit. I am never surprised at what Politicians do with our tax money and what they manage to get away with.

I believe in a commonsense approach to government rather than a reactionary one.
