I have always wondered what we plege allegiance to? Though we say flag, what does the flag represent? Is it showing support for the actions of our government or showing support for the principles which we think this nation has been founded on? I have always wondered what one should be loyal to the country they live in or a certain set of values? I have grown up in the U.S. all of my life but I wonder if the people and country deserve my loyalty or the values that the country was founded upon does. Should we even be loyal to a country? It is the place we live in and an entity of people that share a common government and set of laws but should that alone determine our support? If the U.S. say became a dictatorship or started abolishing the constitution is it our duty as citzens to support the country or the values?

What? Demoboy are you serious? I am beginning to completely loose faith in our public schools.

What are they teaching you over in Wisconsin, or should I say, NOT teaching you. And you're one of the smart kids right? yikes.

I'd better enroll my children in private school, this is frightening.

Sorry Demoboy, I don't mean to sound shocked, but this is a bit much. Even for you. I seriuosly hope that the majority of students don't share your views, for the good of our country.

I'm beginning to understand hottie and company now. They might be right, this is crazy.

dasvics - instead of dismissing what Demoboy has said,
please try to answer each question as it is written not the subject as a whole.

I for one would like to know what people think. It is my belief that that is what Demoboy is doing, just asking a question.

There are 7 questions.
I am really interested in how people answer questions 3 thru 7.

dasvics, can you answer them without the sarcasm?

Are you daft? she did answer, she thinks it's nonsense as a whole!

Oh by the way, I think you should spend more time studying first, then when you get a true grasp on life you might be able to answer those questions that are truly answered differently by the individual.

Actually, I was looking to see if anyone would care to answer questions rather than
not answer them, but just spew sarcasm.

Is it showing support for the actions of our government or showing support for the principles which we think this nation has been founded on?

It has been evident on many of these blogs that some people don’t support the actions of our government.
While still believing in the principles which we think this nation was founded on.
So which one or anything different, are they are they pledging to.

I have always wondered what one should be loyal to the country they live in or a certain set of values?

Some live in this country
and believe in a deviation of Our values.

Should we even be loyal to a country?

Yes, if you live in the United States.

If the U.S. say became a dictatorship or started abolishing the constitution
is it our duty as citizens to support the country
or the values?

I personally would support the values.
There are some in this country that are
[for me] all ready starting to change [amend] the constitution.
If it goes too far from the original,
would that not be a form of abolishment?

I took fire a few times to make sure that Flag still flys free. The Pledge to me is one that basically says that you wont screw over the USA. Something some Hollywood politcal Marxists have no clue about. I cant tell you how cool it looks when you go to a foreign land and see the USA flag at US owned hotels, embassys or the USA World War 2 battlefield near Normandy France.

I meant his more as a philosophical question not as a political one. We are all individuals with values and beliefs and no matter what our nation does I think we should hold to those beliefs.

For the most part I think people say the pledge of allegiance as a cultural staple, we were brought up to be patriotic. I can truly see that there are other people that don't have that patriotism because they are first or second generation citizens whose only presence here was dictated by their parents hunger for prosperity and nothing else. Others who have come from a horrible experience of oppression make it a point to be patriotic because of the joy of being free to do so.
My Grand Father came here legally from Mexico, he never once labeled himself a Portuguese Mexican American. My Grand Father was an American. To make a point, He fought in Mexico against the Zapatistas as a Federal soldier. As soon as he came here, he made no claims to Portugal or Mexico, just America!
Our parents didn't raise us as mindless idiots, they just taught us the value of patriotism and the freedom that comes with being a citizen here. Along with it our pledge to the flag is a symbol of thanks to the many who have fallen it's defense so that people like Nicole, Demboy, Jay and the host of others can hold fast to their views and not be afraid of disappearing in the middle of the night never to be seen again because the dictator of the country thinks you are a threat to his power hold.

I think you need to visit Kenya, Iraq, Cuba, and a few countries like that then ask these qestions. You pledge to your flag because it represents the freedoms you have and one of those is to question why. It represents the safty of the life you live from the government killing or locking you up for not agreeing with them. It is a symble of all that you have and will have and the people who fought to give it to you. So in not doing so or disrespecting it you are basicly saying you would rather have the same life as some of these other countries. I personally do not.

Should Venezuelan's be loyal to there country in spite of the Socialist Dictator, Hugo Chavez? Or would that be "crossing the line"?

Hugo's much worst than a Socialist dictator. He's change the 40 hour workweek to include three hours of intensive MANDATORY classes in Marxism.

But nevertheless, Venezuelans SHOULD be loyal to their country, just not to their leader.

This is great, fabulous,
this is what I was looking for.
I've only been reading these blogs
for a couple of weeks.
Just about all the political or news blogs are full of heat, sarcam, indifference.

I wanted to hear something good about this wonderful free land we live in.

People take for granted that,
they can
say whatever they want
and not disappear in the middle of the night.
One of our many rights,
that others do not have.

With all the complaining, I wanted people to see (as in print) that they remember,
remember what they love about this country.

To take a line from Field of Dreams;
"That's great, you're great, all right America way to go!"

I am neither disrespecting it nor rejecting the flag I am wondering if the principles this nation was founded on which I love and agree with are more important than the nation itself. We are neither the most free or the most Democratic in the world based upon those respective indexes. I think we do a pretty good job but their are other countries that do it better. It is a simple fact not a debatable issue.I do not take for granted the opportunities that this nation has allowed me to have and the freedoms I enjoy in it but quite simply If I support the values solely that you are talking about then it is harder to support the state because their are many countries which have more freedom of the press, privacy rights, less corruption, property rights, and education freedom.

I just want to interrupt for a quick second because quite frankly I am tired of reading a bunch of bickering.

Whenever I see the American flag I see the tattoo of the USMC Bulldog on my dad's upper arm.

I think gimini210 got it right--you need to spend some time in less fortunate parts of the world to appreciate what that flag stands for.
Anyone who has been in the military won't tolerate disrespect to the flag.

I am a Freshman at UW Madison. I believe in real solutions to real problems. I didn't see the Republicans offering any of them so I a gave the Democrats a chance to do something. I believe both parties are too polarized now to get things done so I think moderates are needed. I am a moderate liberal. I spent months deciding who to support in the presidential election but I finally have decided to vote for Senator Barrack Obama. I love studying world problems, playing tennis, playing video games and now blogging.
