Iwo Jima Battle Remembered - February 19th

February 19, 1945


Sixty-three years ago, on this date, I played a tiny part in the invasion and capture
of Iwo Jima Island with the Navy Amphibious Force. 


My ship, LSM 92, landed elements of the 5th Marines and a few Sea-Bees in the
second wave of the assault on the island's black sand. 

Throughout the next month we made many landings to deliver reinforcements,
equipment and supplies in support of the Marines who were engaged in savage warfare.

Each time we withdrew from the beach we brought with us the wounded, mostly
teenagers, and delivered them to hospital ships.  I was 17 years old then, and
shall never forget the experience of 24/7 terror, anger, entrappment endured by
all combat veterans everywhere before, then, and now.

During that murderous month in an area slightly larger than Griffith Park in
Los Angeles, the  Marines suffered incredible casualties in order to fly and protect our flag atop a "mountain" barely high enough to reach the HOLLYWOOD sign!
Compare the one-month's slaughet in that single battle, to the casualties of years of war in Iraq to date!
 

 

 

The city of Berkley, and who knows how many other
misguided, drugged, or brainwashed individuals
in America today, spit in the eyes of Marines
who fight to keep the flag of freedom flying in spite of the
Anti-Americans here and worldwide yearning to burn it.

It is hard for me to accept this insult to the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution,  and the memory of Fallen Marines.  But, it is evident that as long as politicians find it more profitable for their self interests to ignore the threats to America's survival as a nation, I must recognize that the war my generation fought for freedom of speech and  religion, and freedom from fear and poverty was done in vain!
