I met Brad Pitt! Of Brazil! The Brad Pitt of Brazil, that is! Fabio Assunção.

At least that's what some fellow female movie goers told me. (As I stood there with my boyfriend.)
And I didn't actually meet him. But he was standing right in front of me, speaking at the Brazilian Film Festival. Check this link for the Brazil Film Festival:

LA Brazilian Film Festival Website

It was the FIRST Brazilian Film Festival ever. And a coup for the Brazilian community. CONGRATULATIONS Ambassador Quintella! She has fought hard to paint a different picture of Brazil... to expand the vision beyond thong bikinis, sexy Samba dancers, and crazy Carnival!

I LOVE this lady. She was the first female Ambassador out of Brazil and has held posts in the Soviet Union, England, Spain, Argentina and is now the Consul General of Los Angeles. It's her last post before retiring to Brazil in May. When you talk to her your conversation is so intelligent... talk of fuels made of corn, Brazil's black population and the history of slavery, the favelas(shanty towns) where my mom used to work as a nurse in the Peace Corp.

In my continued search for my family roots the Brazilian Film Festival was a chance to connect "with my people." Okay, the people on my father's side. "My people" on my mother's side are in upstate New York. But since I've never my father I'm on a constant quest for anything Brazil. I was first in line for the free "Havaianas"... a popular plastic thong that's made it onto the national market. Havaianas Website Their signature promotion is to have a thong-making stand at events. You pick your thong color... and jewel to be hole-punched into the strap. I picked army green... a Brazil flag logo. I loaded up my plate with coxhina... a chicken dumpling.(so tasty when hot from a restaurant like Bossa Nova). Bossa Nova Website While the movie had subtitles I tried to translate on my own.

The film festival runs through Sunday at the new Landmark Theaters near the Westside Pavilion. It was great to see opening night sold out. The opening film, "Bellini and the Devil", is a 90 minute thriller directed by Marcelo Galvão and produced by Theodoro Fontes. The cast includes Fabio Assunção, Nill Marcondes, Luisa Curvo and Marilia Gabriela. Three of the main actors attended the premiere. I imagined what it must be like for them for the movie to show in Los Angeles. Is that not the dream of every film maker? Hollywood, here we come! One report says that over 100 films are made in Brazil each year. OK, Hollywood here we slowly come. I had wondered who would attend this red-carpet event? There were about four cameras. Hey, it's a start!! So, back to Brazil's Brad Pitt. Some female fans tell me he was a big soap star in Brazil, was married to a model. Was it fun for him to be in L.A? Unrecognized? Unknown? Will he long for the paparazzi of home? It all only added to the mystery and my fantasy of Brazil. I have yet to go there, but will one day soon.

I'd love to hear your stories if you've visited Brazil. Did you feel safe? That's always a concern of mine given the crime and the tragedy of Brazil's impoverished children running the streets. Any places you recommend? Any great vacation spots?

Obrigado,
Christine

I am more worried about our own cities and streets. Gangs toting machine guns, killing mothers and infants, a Federal government committing political suicide. Open borders with Rapists, Murders, Drug Cartels, Foreign Gangs, Car thieves, common thieves and foreign Terrorists of the Islamic flavor, planning to murder Americans in their homes. It is nice to be concerned about people in foreign countries, but we better fix our own country before we endeavor to fix other countries. we have starvation and mass homelessness on our own streets, and a complete national industrial sellout of our job base on all levels which means people will not have many jobs, while foreign people are replacing local people for a serf class of near slave workers. Cruel as it may sound I place Americans First!

Sebar, I couldn't agree with you more. While I appreciate you reading my blog and responding I'm not sure what that has to do with a film festival?

Thorny... the Brad Pitt comparison was their's not mine. I'd not heard of the actor.

AC... Thank you, but I prefer not to post that publicly. Many thanks.

Christine,

Your blog caught my attention in this way. I too have a desire to trace some of my relatives in Brazil. One of my father's paternal uncles emigrated from Japan to Brazil in the 1930s. Most likely, they are likely to be in the Sao Paolo area, where there are many Japanese immigrants and descendents of the immigrants. Ever since my great uncle left for Brazil, the family has lost touch with the rest of the family. Even my cousins in Japan don't know what happened to the family after they emigrated. It would be a blast for me to track down some of my family members in Brazil, and I understand your desire to trace your family roots in Brazil too. I hope you succeed in tracing your father's side of the family. I have my work cut out for me, and my brother wants to find our relatives in Brazil too.

Take Care Now!

I knew Brad Pitt when is was juggling chain-saws in Venice Beach as Chad. I am always surprised on how well liked he is in the media.

Hi Christine,

It was nice reading your blog about the film festival. Valeria, my wife, (you know us through your work in the past with Sambala in Long Beach) has done some work with the film festival in the past and it seems to be getting bigger and better. It is wonderful that you are still digging into your Brazilian roots; we certainly miss you at the events in Long Beach.

I have many wonderful stories about my trips to Brazil; I've met wonderful, warm people and visited beautiful places. I would have to say though that my highlight would be getting married on the beach in Rio. Fortaleza, in the Northeast, is a beautiful city, and from what I heard, the only real major crime was committed by toursits. The beaches there are spectacular; Praia do futuro is miles of beach with warm, clean water. I could sit at the barracas all day enjoying fresh seafood and cold cervejas; and further away, a magical spot called Canoa Quebrada, which has these huge sand dunes near the ocean that are beautiful to take in sunsets. Jericoacoara, is another beach that can only be reached by 4 wheel drive or special buses, and was featured as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. I have been to Rio 4 times and the only problem I ever had was from the police at a traffice checkpoint on the way to Buzios, a vacation spot. They came up with some bogus infraction, and we paid our "fine" on the spot and were sent on our way. The advice that was given to me was dress like a local and do NOT wear anything flashy...

On another note, Christine, and without going into detail here, Valer

It has been my honor to work(anchor 10pm news) at Fox 11 news since 1990(yes, I started when I was 2!) Jokes aside, Fox 11 has allowed me to continue my passion for knowledge and education. My parents were both educators and stressed "knowing about our world." They were aid workers in Brazil(my heritage) and Africa and emphasized a caring for community. I love coming to work each day and being a part of "what's new." Fox 11 has allowed me to serve through our Wednesday's Child program. Our goal, to help children in foster care... who will end up on the streets at 18... find permanent safe homes. Through WC we are using the power and outreach of TV to find adoptive homes for children in GREAT need. My parents were foster parents and adopted one boy. I was adopted by my step-dad, which gave me the name "Devine." At home, I enjoying cooking and fitness. I have a new puppy for the first time since high school and am completely in love. (and with my fiance too!)
