A typical transitional week coming up for the Midwest.  Right off the bat we have a taste of summer with a warm southerly flow sending temps back into the 80s on Monday.  But the warm air will not last.  A weather system is splitting as it slowly heads towards the Mississippi River.  The northern low will head into Canada while the southern energy will get stuck.  I think the models are trying to progress this southern energy too quickly through the upper level ridge anchored over the Great Lakes.  As a result, I expect unsettled conditions to move in Tuesday and continue into Wednesday night...and perhaps linger into Thursday.  This energy/low will be responsible for waves of showers and a few thunderstorms.  The dynamics don't look as favorable at this point as they did a few days ago so severe storms...while not out of the question... don't look like a big factor at this point.   Temperatures with the clouds will get cooler by day....only in the low 70s at best Tuesdsay and Wednesday.  As the system pulls away Thursday into Friday, there is little to no cold air...in fact...it's just more mild Pacific air...so I expect it to warm up nicely late in the week once the clouds finally do break.

Then attention turns to the weekend and early next week when signals are starting to point to a rather potent fall/winter like system taking shape in the Rockies and Plains.  This will eventually bring more rain and much colder temperatures our way...but timing and specifics this far out are impossible to gage.  Needless to say, early next week will feature a transition to colder fall temperatures.

One final note... I have received MANY emails and phone calls about the time change this fall.  We set our clocks back (fall back) on November 2nd.

Thanks for the new corner Chris! I have been watching the GFC closely lately and I am noticing someting I havent noticed before, at least I didn't notice what I see, last year. In the week of the 12th I see a good push of some cold air trying to dig south in to the southwest, on the western side of the rockies. And then sharply gets cut off and some pockets of cold air linget while the main body retreats. I did not notice that last year. Anyway, looking forward to some rain... my yard needs it.

Hey all, just a heads up that HM over at ACCUWX has posted his winter weather outlook. Personally, I do not 100% agree with him (remember I am not a professional weather man), not because of what he says will or will not happen to us here at STL, but because of the holes. If you read it you may understand. I do agree with the "between the "eL NINO/LA NINA" patterns" and I do agree that the Great Lakes region is the bullseye, sort of, for the majority of the snow this year. If you can take a minute and read his forecast and let me know what you think, I would appreciate it. Have a great day!

Do the leaves seem to be coming off the trees early this year or is it just me? Is there a weather related issue causing this? Also, it seems the squirrels are saying it's going to be a brutal winter.. I don't know how much truth is in that but they sure seem excessively busy this year.
I love weather but do not know much of the science. I read the posts here all the time and enjoy all the knowledge that works its way onto this blog. Not that these are important questions but I am curious..

hello all, im from wentzville,mo but i recently moved to carthage,ny which is just southeast of watertown,ny, about 25 miles from lake ontario. Does anyone know how i could find out if I live in the so called "snow belt", I know that this area gets a lot of snow, much of which is caused by the lake. I understand the gist of what causes this but not fully. I also don't understand why these bursts of snow can set up for extended periods of time off the lake, however only cover a span of a few miles. If anyone can explain this to me I would greatly appreciate it, I'm kind of excited I've never seen snow like what they say that we get here

Hey skiz, I do not know about the snow belt... but if you are 25 miles from Ontario, you can bet that lake effect snow will get you... A LOT of snow falls on windward side of the lakes. Looking at the GOOGLE map, I see that you are alittle north and west of the lake, but that should still set you up pretty good. I also like the fact that there is a belleville close to you too... sooo that should make you feel right at home. Have fun!!!

Skiz, as long as the lakes are not frozen, air flows across the lakes and picks up that moisture. When the air hits land, it slows due to friction causing the air flowing in behind it to rise. The locations that get the snow at any given time depend on the direction of the winds.

Dave said the leaf changing is about a week behind schedule. However last year it was so late, it didn't even peak till early November or mid november, still had leaves on the trees on Thanksgiving. Seems to me that we're on schedule. looks more and more like Late November and December are going to be alot of fun, at the very least very cold.
And we have a itty bitty tropical storm in the Bay of Campeche, Marco. He will move into Mexico and not bother the US.

thanks for the comments, weaxwatcher, and beaker, i'm really excited about seeing that kind of snowfall. its odd being this early in the season and its already getting kind of chilly. There is a freeze warning for tonight, they said its supposed to get down to 30 or so. It'll be interesting to see if my little VW GTI can make it through a winter up here! I hope you all get at least a few good southern storm systems, and get dumped on a few times. I spent many nights awake all night waiting for the "big storms" that never seemed to come. Hopefully I won't have that problem anymore LOL!

Hey all. Love this weather. On a somewhat related note, most of the hummingbirds should have migrated away by now, but we should keep our eyes out for other migrant species, particularly Rufous Hummingbirds. They're about the same size as our Ruby-Throated that we normally have but are more orange to rust colored. If anyone sees any to get a pic, post it on the blog. In the meantime, I'll try to figure out how to post some of my better hummingbird pics from the summer.

Hey Chris, I've got a favor to ask? My family is going camping down to Eminence,MO

We will be camping at Alley spring campgroung this weekend. Can you give me a basic forcast on how the weather will be down their? Thanks alot. This will be my daughters 1st camping trip. She is only 6 months so she won't remember. But I would like to know if the weather will be nice down their too??

i think dave has hinted an awful lot about this winter and i qoute "one us snowbunnies will enjoy" and so and so forth chris help me out here is it cuz this winter really will be snowy and cold or to keep us watching for the next hint about the oncoming winter
