Weather or Not

by ChrisHiggins from FOX 2

Last Post 10 days, 14 hours Ago

After almost 5 months of deployment and a couple of weeks of down town to rest, it's time to start getting back into the swing of things here at Fox 2.  Wow, have things changed...station gets sold and now we are merging operations with KPLR.  There will be no shortage of interesting times ahead for us here at Fox 2...that is for sure.

I need to pass along once again to everyone my  most sincere and heart-felt thanks for your thoughts, prayers and just overall well wishes while I was gone.  I especially need to thank my co-workers who picked up the slack....Mark, Angella, Dave and Glenn all did a great job filling the void.  But now I'm back and the it's time to shift back into weather mode.

Looking at the week ahead, the pattern is fairly quiet.  While there will be a dip in the jet this week, the main push with this will stay up to the north keeping any major pushes of cool air away.  This dip is enough to dislodge the pesky upper low that kept our skies mixed up with clouds over the weekend and even produced a few spotty thunderstorms.

With that low out of the picture clouds will be fewer and farther between.  The upper flow might look like one that would argue for a large warm-up...but the surface winds don't indicate it.  In fact, the models are showing little wind on Monday...and only light winds the next couple of days with a ridge of high pressure to our east being the main player.  This type of scenerio will offer only modest warming... lower to mid 80s at most...with stronger warming out west of western MO where the south/southwesterfly flow will become well established.

Don't take your eyes off the tropics... it looks like a new tropical storm is on the way as conditions are at least somewhat favorable for a disturbance near Puerrto Rico to get organized in the next day or so.  This will be a watcher for the east coast ... as current trends block the Gulf of Mexico.

Thanks again to everyone...let the discussions begin!

-Chris

Great to have you back, Chris. It's been a strange year...plenty of flooding, not much of the typical "take-your-breath-away" heat and humidity we're used to...even the tropical systems have been acting funny. Looking forward to whatever Fall and Winter bring.

Chris,

Great to have you home. Man we all missed you. I know you are just getting back into the swing of things after being away but i would like to know your thoughts on this fall and of course the MILLION dollar ? is winter and snow. What are your thoughts???? The farmers people have made alot of people jump for joy with there prediction of snowy and cold and even dave gave us a hint as to what might be in store this winter. Although small in nature but big in minds. No doubt you will have this question come up a hundred times. So do you have any thoughts yet??? Boy you are going to see it all in a 6 month period 120 degree heat and then snow not to many people see that. Well great to hve you back and can't wait to enjoy the "fun" on winter with you again.

"WELCOME HOME CHRIS"!
So glad you made it back safely. Now.. the big question?? What are your thoughts on the snowfall this year? I have a blog on my page and hope you will predict a date for the snowfall. It is just for fun, and I expect nobody to be accurate, but will be interested in seeing who comes in the winner. Thanks,P.J.

LOL, already the questions about winter and snow Chris, welcome back man! Great to see ya on TV again and great to see another Chris' Corner up and running. Angela and others did a great job with the weather blogs in your absence, but great to see the master is back.
This week does look rather "boring" around here anyway. The east coast may get 2 different storms, the first one a hybrid/subtropical system maybe, followed by what will likely be Kyle. At least there'll be something to watch.

Holy Cow! So many questions about the winter already! The CPC has a great long lead outlook - basically milder than normal with equal chances of above, below, or normal precip. Of course, going trends would be the most influencing factor to this forecast absent of any strong El Nino or La Nina. It would be fun to have a "snow bowl" of sorts with the bloggers on here. I think I have a pretty reasonable prediction in my mind, but my predictions are no more accurate than the Old Farmer's Almanac. I am interested in two things: 1) The tendency for winters following the first 9 months of above average rainfall; and 2) The tendency of winters during sunspot minima cycles which occur during enso-neutral periods. My hunch is that nature tries to "even things out" toward the end of the year in the precip metrics and that the minima solar cycle will help drive cold air deep into the European continent.

Hey Chris, Glad to be back in the corner! Angela did an absolute superb job in her corner and gave us all a place to discuss the weather. I am happy to hear that you had some time to re-aquaint yourself with your family and friends. I can't wait for our future discussions on what this fall and winter will bring. It is going to be a beautiful fall color season and a very cold winter. Have a great day.

Hey Chris, great to have you back and the "Corner" back in business(although Angela did do a good job taking over while you were gone)! I know you've heard it a mil times, but thanks again for serving our country, it's appreciated greatly!

It does look like we've got a stretch of quiet weather, with any Western energy staying to the N and W, and tropical systems in the East keeping any return flow at bay. A front might try to make it into the area later in the week, but moisture will be limited, and large scale ascent will be absent, so probably a dry week ahead. Very typical weather for this time of the year, although it's a bit warmer than average. Enjoy everyone!

I don't mean to talk non weather in here but what is with the channel 11 channel 2 thing? IS Fox 2 staying Fox 2? Just changing locations or what's going on? Sorry just confused a bit and concerned for the awesome Fox 2 staff!!!!

Hey Medic... yeah... it is a bit confusing and there are still lots of unknowns as to exactly how and when this will play out. The bottomline is that we are merging operations with KPLR at some point and the resulting "cooperative" will be based entirely out of KPLR's existing facility in Westport. We will be providing news/weather etc. to both KPLR and KTVI. I really don't know anything beyond that nor would it be prudent for me to speculate beyond the obvious...it will be an interesting 12 months at both KPLR and KTVI as this new era in St. Louis TV unfolds.
