Weather or Not

Hello once again from the middle of nowhere!

First and foremost I have to extend some huge thank yous to a couple of groups of very special people.  A very very very heart felt thank you to my fellow Knights of Columbus at Ascension parish in Chesterfield.  They pulled together a HUGE care package (actually packages) full of lots of good stuff that arrived late last week.  Only a few days later, I received a second HUGE care package from my awesome co-workers and friends at Fox 2.  I'm now well stocked and should have enough goodies to get me through the rest of the summer.

The care packages couldn't have come at a better time for me.  I'm now almost six weeks into my deployment with about 3 more months to go.  The reality of being away from my home and family for that long keeps sneaking up on me at the weirdest times.  Instead of getting easier with each day it seems to get more difficult.  I can't even begin to imagine the mental and physical stress our troops went through back during earlier wars...when there were few phones, no computers, no internet or digital cameras.  I get to talk to my wife and family at least 1x a week..sometimes more.  In previous wars they were lucky to get to talk once a month... or longer.  I've actually taken to writing letters home because sometimes it just seems more private and personal.  Besides, who doesn't like to get a letter in the mail, right?

I haven't been able to get a status report on our adopt a soldier program through A SOLDIERS WISH LIST.  But from the sounds of things we are at least making a dent.  Coming up sometime in the next week or two I will be doing a live phone interview with Mark Christopher at KTRS.  I'll use that opportunity to once again put out the call for folks to adopt soldiers.  I've been so blessed by so many friends...I just want to make sure others who are in far worse conditions receive the same.

The weather here during the past week has been horrible.  The worst wind, dust, sand,e tc. storm of my time here so far.  One side effect is that this "Shamal" pattern as it's called, does bring down the temperatures.  It has only been in the 103 to 107 range the past few days which has felt amazingly cool.

BRTN.. congrats on the funnel cloud spotting.  Gotta be careful at night though...especially in MO and IL.  Roads don't exactly go straight...especially in MO and it can be dangerous at best.  I do wish I was there...so save some of the storms for when I get back.  I haven't seen a cloud in nearly 5 weeks...not one!

The family is doing well... but as I have always said... deployment is more difficult on the family you leave at home.  My wife has been doing an awesome job of keeping everything in good shape while I've been gone.  I think she needs a care package more than I do LOL.  Maybe I can get her a day at the spa?  Any ideas from former military?  What did your spouses like most to get while you were gone?

Well...time is slowly crawling by and its time for me to get back to work.  Best wishes to all...

-Chris

Chris,
Glad to hear you're hanging in there. Just keep thinking of returning to family and Fall temperatures. I'm sure they just love hearing from you more than anything--whether it's a phone call or letter. Other than that, maybe send them a tanker of $0.25 gas (or whatever it is over there). Then she can pamper herself with the money saved...LOL.

Sir,
From an active duty guy (Navy Chief); My job let me call or e-mail when ever I wanted to, and to be quite honest I called at least 4 or 5 times a week. I spoiled my homecoming, as my wife really never got the chance to miss me. My advice to you is to call when you can regardless, send letters vial snail mail with the hugs and kisses and daddy talk in them and e-mail when you have the more important issues that need to be taken care of fast. I do not regret being able to call at anytime I wanted, but I do regret not giving my wife a chance to miss me. I am not real sure where you are located, not sure what creature comforts you have... I worked out everyday, sometimes twice a day. I tried to get to know my peers and the juniors alike just to keep the momentum moving along. I am not sure this will help but from a SNCO (NAVY equivalent is CPO/E-7) with 7 deployments under the belt, I've learned what makes and keeps my family happy and informed, within the compounds of reason. Take care and stay safe!

Chris, great to hear from you again! Thanks for the props on the funnel, and reminding me to be safe in the dark - I know the roads around here pretty well, and had actually chased on this particular road before, so I knew it would go pretty smoothly. The SW region of that storm was very well defined on radar and in person, so I knew all I'd need was a well placed strike to see it, and that's all it took.

I'm sure you've been keeping tabs, but you will be missing an impressive river flooding event over here in the next few days/weeks - it's getting bad up North, even in Quincy, which will see major levels or better in the next few days. I'm afraid this pattern will not ease for some time too. The current slow moving, deep low pressure system churning across the Upper Midwest spells more trouble for the flood ravaged IA/WI/IL areas.

Stay safe and cool!

Ah, now I'm seeing that they are calling for major flood levels at Grafton now! This is getting serious.

Yes 10 feet above flood stage puts them at the 2nd highest crest ever. The graphs haven't been updated to meet the new rainfall amounts from up north. Who knows how high they will rise. Now the missouri is coming into play up north in Nebraska, Kansas area! Yikes.

Chris,
Great to hear from you. We've been storm free for a couple of days here in Belleville. It's really quite nice.
We miss you .

Heya Cap. Yeah it does seem to get harder as time goes by. I really have no advice that will make it any easier. Just remember that all of us here support you and your buds.
The only thing that made it easier for me is realizing that every one else was feeling the same way. We bonded in ways that no civilian can ever understand. We became life long friends, no matter how far apart we are.
Wow! Only 103? Get out the long handles man, you might get frost bitten.

And to let you know. A bunch of us old retired farts around here have our own adopt a soldier mission going on. Anybody that wants to join in can go to any VFW or American Legion post and get the info, our donate items or cash to defray shipping costs.
Hey did you hear? General Schwartz has been tagged to be Chief of Staff for the USAF. Scotts loss is a big time gain for the country!

I just talked to Julieann at A Soldiers Wish List. She says about 10 servicemen and women have been adopted by FOX 2 fans.

She still has more than 100 who need to get matched.

If you are interested in sending care packages to military personnel, visit A Soldiers Wish List

Chris....thanks once again for keeping us updated on what's going on with you. Are you enjoying the Raisin Bran CRUNCH (emphasis on "Crunch"!!)? I don't like plain Raisin Bran either....

I will continue to pray for you every day.

One more thing Chris...

When my old boyfriend Brett was over in Desert Storm, we used to send a cassette tape back and forth. When it was my turn to record it, I would mostly just talk....sometimes play the piano.....sometimes take it around to his family and have them say a few things on it.....sometimes record the latest song from his favorite group. I used to LOVE getting that tape in the mail! When he died, I was the last one to have received the tape, so I will always have that to remember him by.

Just an idea.....
