The Other Chip

We took tons of calls tonight from viewers who were upset with us for interrupting House.   Tons of calls, and many more went unanswered.  We aboslutely understand your concern.  Many of us at FOX 4 like House too, and a lot of us working in the newsroom tonight were hoping to watch it at home on our VCRs, DVRs and Tivos after work.

But please understand our first concern at FOX 4 is your safety.  When the National Weather Service issued a Tornado Warning for southeastern Tarrant County, about 8:15pm, we had to go on the air right away to tell those people about the imminent danger.   Tornado sirens were sounding in Arlington, and later Grand Prairie.  Spotters were seeing low-level rotation in the clouds overhead.  This was a very dangerous situation.

Folks asked us why don't we just give the warning, and then return to regular programming.  Most of the time we do that.  We try to keep our "cutin's" as brief as we can.  But when there's an imminent tornado threat, we're going to stay on the air as long as public safety is at immediate risk.  And there was a tornado-capable storm passing over about 200,000 people.  And with nearby storms dropping golf-ball and even baseball-sized hail stones (confirmed by trained spotters), that's a life-threatening situation too.

All during our coverage, we were in close touch with the National Weather Service and with the ham-radio operators spotting the skies around the storm.  As soon as the storm threat passed, we wrapped up.  (Keep in mind there was another storm with a hail threat emerging in Hood and Bosque counties at the end of the 8pm hour.)

So far there's been no reports of wind or tornado damage, and no tornado was ever spotted in the Arlington area, despite the persistent low-level rotation.   But as we learned from the Wylie tornado the other night, tornadoes can spin up with no warning.  And they can cause significant damage.  And they can hurt or kill people.

We don't like making viewers angry at us.  But our first priority is keeping you safe.  To those callers I spoke with tonight, and to all the rest of you who are upset with us, all I can say is that we'll do our best to provide the same level of warning when a storm like this comes to your neighborhood.  And it will, one of these days.

Thanks for sharing your concerns and complaints, and thanks for reading our reply here.

Ok if severe weather was really at hand, most of us would have lost power anyway and would have to turn on a radio or something else. Why couldnt you just run a ticker at the bottom of the screen or split the screen up and put closed captioning???

Imminent danger my arse! You people were talking about who was were, who's at the malls, what have they seen, same reports over and over and over again.

If this happened t 3 in the morning, most of us would be asleep anyway.

Are you going to replay House then?

Hey! It's Boogles here, For "Us" old Texans, that was pretty sorry. I think that these "Young Weathermen", should take a course in "Texas Weather History". And don't get all exited over a little bit of it. When they have been here, for Forty Years or more, they would be as "Mad" as "Us". We will have to watch "House" on A$E reruns. :)

Hey! Me again, It does not take 45 minutes, to let people know, unless you don't know were you are. Then all you have to do, is cover your head. Don't disturb people, that know were they are, or don't live anywhere near any storms. Boogles

I can't imagine why anyone would be more interested in watching a TV show then being advised of possibly dangerous weather, which could injure us or damage our property -- Especially since the weather has become more extreme due to global warming. I like to know these things so I can make decisions about going out or seeking shelter to protect myself if necessary. We all know what happens to people who choose to ignore the severe weather situations - we hear about them on the 10 o'clock news.

If the dangerous weather is in other parts of Texas and not where you live, please be considerate of those folks living there. They have a need to know.

Thank you FOX 4 for your weather information.

I have to agree with the sum of everyones concerns about this issue. I watch every episode of house that airs on fox. Be it new or rerun, and for you to interrupt 30-40 minutes of a new episode for people who most likely are not watching your station...it really irritates everybody. This storm was more than an hour drive away from me, and now I have missed it because you were unable to figure out that a message on the bottom of the screen is just as effective as you ruining our show!

There were those of us in the path of the severe weather who totally lost TV signal for the duration of the storm, so it didn't matter that you interrupted House; we couldn't see your warnings either. That being said, it would have been wonderful if I could have logged on to your website after the storm passed to see a complete web-cast of the show so I wouldn't have missed it completely. As it stands now, I will not see it until someone decides to show it in reruns. What's up with not having House as one of your web-casts?

We understand that you had to do the public service thing tonight and that you couldn't control the timing so the warnings had to come during the House show instead of the Idol show before it. All you had to do to keep everyone happy was announce that you would reair House in its entirety at a future date/time. If that wasn't possible, just add House to the On Demand line up that features current episodes of other popular dramas like 24 and Bones. When did you say you would be re-airing House from 4/3 - uninterrupted by Dan's great weather reporting, of course?

I work in that area; responsible for nearly 30 people in the office and across the metroplex. My first thought was: "where is my crew in relation to this path? who could be driving into it now? what route will get them out of there?" These cut-in's, my hubby & my cell phone helped me keep people out of harms way and, for that, I'm thankful!

The hail at the office was pretty big for a while... slightly larger than a marble. Once I got in touch with everyone, my next thought went to "MY CAR!!" Aaagh!!

I didn't notice any damage but it was dark when I left work.

I logged in to see if there's an announcement on when they'll be re-airing the episode. Seems like a simple way to do whatever they felt they needed to do warning-wise and satisfy the people who really wanted to watch the new episode of House. But I guess there's no plan at all? Well done, KDFW.

I was one of the spotters out tonight spotting that storm in Arlington. And I am so surprised of all of the crybabies over a stupid TV show than the safety of lives. Even though it may not have been in your area, the TV broadcast just cant come onto certain peoples TV. What if you had an elderly person, who has no internet, may have a NOAA radio, and is in the path of this storm. Without the TV broadcast of this storm, and the continuing broadcast, this person would probably never know they were in danger. You "House" crybabies need to educate yourself when it comes to severe weather and tornados. Ive seen storms changed in a matter of seconds. And just like the saying "seconds count" in a medical situation, it also can apply to severe weather. But until you experience your own damage to your house, car, ect, you will never understand. And as it was mentioned by Chip, it will happen someday. You think those people in Arlington who just had their homes suffer major damage are concerned about missing the "House" episode?

I thank FOX 4 for bringing the live coverage. I had relatives I was concerned about and were working...I was able to let them know what was happening in Arlington so they would be cautious of leaving their jobs.

Let me see, what's more important, a TV program or lives? LIVES!!! THANKS FOX 4!!

I too cant believe what Im reading here..all the cry babies.. big deal its a TV show..god the reruns will come soon enough.. What is more important is the safety of the people.. Just because there is a ticker running across the bottom of the screen doesnt mean that everyone takes it seriously... Sometimes when it is as important as last night..you have to break in and give DETAIL information... on whats going on... I live in Ellis COunty and we didnt get a drop of rain last night.. but Im sure glad to know that there is someone looking out for all of us..Hey I missed most of Law and Order SVU last night..but Im not crying... Its just a show!!! Get a grip!!!!

Howdy! First off, I'm not the FOX 4 traffic guy. That's Waggoner. I'm the "other Chip" and I’m the managing editor of this world’s-finest newsroom. One of my responsibilities is to manage this website, so I’d love to hear your comments. Outside of work, I’m on the board of directors of Radio Television News Directors Association, the leading organization of TV/radio/online journalists in the world. One of the Top 5 highlights of my life will come when the Texas Rangers win a World Series. My wife is also in TV News, and we've got two great kids. This photo is me in front of a mountain glacier at the Columbia Icefields in Alberta, Canada. How to tell Chip Waggoner and me apart? We're both good-looking, but he's a Frog and I'm a Mustang, and that's all you need to know about that!
