The Other Chip

I didn't mean to hurt anyone's feelings in the prior post. I wasn't knocking either of the two blog posts regarding shopping (or not) at Sears. I was only pointing out the irony in the conflict between them, and perhaps clumsily trying to make a broader point that I won't change shopping habits based on any reason that doesn't have to do directly with the basics of any economic decision: price, quality, convenience, etc.

I agree with the commenter who said there is sometimes good information to be found in chain e-mails. But I always do check snopes.com before passing any of that information on, particularly with regard to potential news stories here at FOX 4.

With all that said, let me offer you my LEAST favorite chain e-mail. We've gotten this chain sent to our Viewers Voice e-mail box viewersvoice@kdfwfox4.com at least 100 times. The e-mail is only half true at best. I'll copy the e-mail here, and then write my standard reply below.

Subject: Fw: Denzel Washington

Don't know whether you heard about this but Denzel Washington and his family visited the troops at Brook Army Medical Center, in San Antonio, Texas (BAMC) the other day. This is where soldiers that have been evacuated from Germany come to be hospitalized in the States, especially burn victims. They have buildings there called Fisher Houses. The Fisher House is a hotel where soldiers' families can stay, for little or no charge, while their soldier is staying in the hospital. BAMC has quite a few of these houses on base but as you can imagine, they are almost completely filled most of the time.

While Denzel Washington was visiting BAMC, they gave him a tour of one of the Fisher Houses. He asked how much one of them would cost to build. He took his check book out and wrote a check for the full amount right there on the spot. The soldiers overseas were amazed to hear this story and want to get the word out to the American public, because it warmed their hearts to hear it

The question I have is why does Alec Baldwin, Madonna, Sean Penn and other Hollywood types make front page news with their anti-everything America crap and this doesn't even make page 3 in the Metro section of any newspaper except the base newspaper in San Antonio.

My reply:

This story is only half true. Check out this link at snopes.com for the real story.

By the way, FOX 4 did cover this story the day Denzel visited the base, which was back in December 2004. But we only told the part of the story that was true.

Thank goodness for Snopes.com!

Chip, I got that email, too, and thought it was ALL true. I see now where it half true. But, don't you just hate chain email? I mean some of it is OK, but...my Lord!

I apologize for my comment on the other blog. I did indeed think you were attacking their chain e-mail blogs. I misinterpreted. My bad, Chip!

I have got this SAME one!!

I am sure the same ones go around thousands of times.... but don't you ever wonder who the ORIGINATOR was??

Imagine making an email, sending it, then getting it back a few times over the next 2 years..... Would you feel like a mini-celeb or something?

As much as I hate emails - it would be cool if one that YOU did was now a "chain" email, don't ya think?

Thanks, Chip. I detest chain mail/email and normally delete them right away. This one got my attention only because of the soldiers because I'm not a Sears fan and as you read in my post later in the day I did not have a pleasant shopping experience when I did try to patronize them.

I was a little too touchy over your remarks in light of all the other garbage that has gone on at this site lately and rekindled itself last night.

I appreciate your clarification and will continue to focus on the news as I have in the past.

I went to Snopes.com and he giving a substantial donation should have gotten more media coverage then all negative news we get about celebrities.

I could care less if this email is true or not. I don’t base any truth or fact on chain-emails.
Having said that. Let’s look at it this way. It did make some people look up the truth. Those of us who wish to know the truth will take the time to look it up or find out more about it.

I do not trust snopes to be correct. I have seen stuff on there that was not true.

I put snopes up about the same level as Wiki for credibility.

Howdy! First off, I'm not the FOX 4 traffic guy. That's Waggoner. I'm the "other Chip" and I’m the managing editor of this world’s-finest newsroom. One of my responsibilities is to manage this website, so I’d love to hear your comments. Outside of work, I’m on the board of directors of Radio Television News Directors Association, the leading organization of TV/radio/online journalists in the world. One of the Top 5 highlights of my life will come when the Texas Rangers win a World Series. My wife is also in TV News, and we've got two great kids. This photo is me in front of a mountain glacier at the Columbia Icefields in Alberta, Canada. How to tell Chip Waggoner and me apart? We're both good-looking, but he's a Frog and I'm a Mustang, and that's all you need to know about that!
