The Other Chip

Looking at the blogs today, I see two conflicting blogs about Sears posted just a few hours apart from each other.

Yesterday, "mykidzatm" reprinted parts of a chain e-mail that tells people to shop at Sears because they're supporting their employees who are reservists called up to fight the war. Click here for the link.

Last night, "dolphinchic" posted a chain e-mail telling people NOT to shop at Sears because the company is buying commercials on a cable TV network programmed for gay/lesbian viewers. Click here for the link.

My head is spinning, but thankfully I never let a single issue dictate whether I'm going to do business with a company. Sears is a huge company, and they market to the masses -- that means everyone in the community.

I don't normally shop Sears, but if they had the best of what I was looking for, at the best price, I'd be there in a minute, no matter what any chain e-mail told me to do. Likewise, I wouldn't necessarily decide to shop them just because I supported one thing they did that I liked.

By the way, we get a lot of viewer e-mails here at FOX 4, and we appreciate every one of them. But if you want to pass along a chain e-mail, you might check it out first at snopes.com to see if it's true.

I agree with you Chip on the single issue stopping me from shopping at a store. It would have to be pretty bad for me to stop. Like you, I don't shop Sears much, mostly for a car battery when I need one.

I must agree. If a store has something I need at the best price for it, I'm probably going to shop there. Unless they have a habit of randomly killing customers or something like that, then I MIGHT think twice.

I agree as well, Chip. I normally do not shop at Sears, but I had to give them props for supporting our troops. As far as the gay/lesbian thing, I don't think I care about that at all.

Phil, I got a chuckley about the randomly killing customers. I had a vision of people pulling the numbers to insure their turn in line. Someone would pull the tag and it says, 'see the guy with the gun'.

The only thing I buy at Sears is my jeans. They are the only place I know of that has "Flex Jeans." And I need the flex in the waist if you know what I mean.

Also, Chip, if you don't mind . . . I have tried to post the hyperlinks to other websites but for some reason I can't get it to work on the blog. I can do it in my email okay. I followed your instructions that you had before, but for some reason I do not have the hyperlink button on my page toolbar and I don't know how to add it on. The hyperlink button is on my email toolbar because I have it on my Word program toolbar. But I cannot get the hyperlink to work on the blog. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I don't shop at Sears because I can get it cheaper elsewhere.

Based on their support of our Reserve troops, I say we should all be shopping there. If we won't support our own community and our country, we got nothin' worth protecting. Might as well be speaking Chinese.

As stated in the very first line of my original post, I checked the authenticity of this letter on snopes.com before even considering posting it.

The purpose of the Sears post was not a paid ad nor endorsement for their products or other business practices.

It was an endorsement for their stand-up employment practice with regard to those who serve our country and as TexasGuyDFW stated above "If we won't support our own community and our country, we got nothin' worth protecting".

I'll refrain from such posts in the future to avoid the appearance of "inappropriate chain letters".

mykids,

I heard you loud and clear in your first post. I understood perfectly it was a chain mail, and you checked it out on snopes. I was proud you did so, as so many post stuff here that is NOT true, and they don't bother to verify.

I would not let this particular blog keep you from posting more like it in the future, as long as you do your due diligence, like this time.

Nobody is accusing you of plagiarism, or posting untrue things here.

The only conflict in the two post is one SHOULD engender us to Sears, and one MAY not.

mykidzatm, I wasn't getting on you. Don't take it that way. I just found it interesting that two bloggers had two different things to say about Sears, and they both came from e-mail chains.

I'm glad you wrote that you checked it out on snopes. That's a good lesson for all of us.

I was just commenting (somewhat in jest) that I didn't know what everyone was telling me to do re Sears. Shop or Don't Shop?

Keep on blogging, mykidzatm!

I get updates every so often from The American Family Association,,, That is where my post came from about Sears,, you can check it out.. www.afa.net,,,, I posted this on Atm's only to let people make an informed decision as to where they would want to spend their money...It was nothing against supporting our Troops,,, I personally know of too many that are serving Our Country as we speak.. My point was that there is always two sides to every story....

I think as long as the validity of the content is verified (like on Snopes), it's fine to post a chain e-mail. Some of the most interesting blogs on here have been chain e-mails.

I am torn between the two -- supporting and boycotting Sears,

Guess I'll just shop Wal-Mart as a compromise.

Further, I'm not going to question anyone's blogs (and I don't think others should either) when people are still making personal blogs about other people and nothing is being done about it. (See: http://community.myfoxdfw.com/blogs/chardoney/2006/12/1

Showdog, you're going to have to write the code manually in order to insert a link into your blog post.

Here's a sample link to our site, but because I can't post HTML code (including links) as a comment here, I've substituted regular parentheses for the angle bracket. Wherever you see a parenthesis here, substitute an angle bracket.

(A HREF="http://www.myfoxdfw.com")This is the text that shows up linked.(/A)

Hope this helps.

Howdy! First off, I'm not the FOX 4 traffic guy. That's Waggoner. I'm the "other Chip" and I’m the managing editor of this world’s-finest newsroom. One of my responsibilities is to manage this website, so I’d love to hear your comments. Outside of work, I’m on the board of directors of Radio Television News Directors Association, the leading organization of TV/radio/online journalists in the world. One of the Top 5 highlights of my life will come when the Texas Rangers win a World Series. My wife is also in TV News, and we've got two great kids. This photo is me in front of a mountain glacier at the Columbia Icefields in Alberta, Canada. How to tell Chip Waggoner and me apart? We're both good-looking, but he's a Frog and I'm a Mustang, and that's all you need to know about that!
