The Other Chip

SMU and Rice play each other this weekend. By my calculations, it's the first time these two teams have met, with something on the line for both teams, since 1940. There's been a lot of losing years between these two teams, so this game has often passed as only a footnote to the bigger teams and games out there.

But this year is different. SMU is 6-5. Rice is 6-5. The team that wins Saturday in Houston will be 7-5 and will play in a bowl game. The team that loses will finish 6-6 and will almost certainly NOT play in a bowl.

How big would this be for either school? SMU hasn't been to a bowl since 1984. Rice hasn't bowled since 1961.

Both teams have brighter futures ahead. The SMU quarterback Justin Willis is a star-in-the-making. I've seen 5 SMU games this season, and he is definitely something special.

Here's another angle to look at these teams. Which would you rather have this year? The old Big 8 teams? Or the old Southwest Conference teams? With SMU, Rice, TCU, Arkansas, Texas A&M, Houston, Texas Tech, and Texas all finishing above .500, that's a pretty strong league.

My pick is Rice over SMU.

I would like to have the old Southwest Conference teams, that would make for some good football viewing.

SMU will have to do something they've only done once this year: win on the road. It's a tall order against a HOT team like Rice.

I hope SMU wins, but I cannot predict the outcome of this game.

Howdy! First off, I'm not the FOX 4 traffic guy. That's Waggoner. I'm the "other Chip" and I’m the managing editor of this world’s-finest newsroom. One of my responsibilities is to manage this website, so I’d love to hear your comments. Outside of work, I’m on the board of directors of Radio Television News Directors Association, the leading organization of TV/radio/online journalists in the world. One of the Top 5 highlights of my life will come when the Texas Rangers win a World Series. My wife is also in TV News, and we've got two great kids. This photo is me in front of a mountain glacier at the Columbia Icefields in Alberta, Canada. How to tell Chip Waggoner and me apart? We're both good-looking, but he's a Frog and I'm a Mustang, and that's all you need to know about that!
