I just got back from a brief vacation to Los Angeles and a few things really struck me. I grew up in LA so it is going back home for me. The congestion and housing prices just blew me away. My nephew just purchased an $800,000 fixer upper. It is a one story home built in the 60's that needs a lot of work. Whew! It is his first home. He just recently got married. Imagine that mortgage payment. Also, the traffic is just out of control. I spent time in Santa Monica, Huntinton Beach, Laguna and Crestline. I put about 350 miles on my rental car and spent no less than 10 hours sitting in bumper to bumper traffic. It didn't matter if I was traveling at noon or 10 o clock at night. The freeways are always packed. Thank goodness I was traveling with others and could use the diamond lane...but then it too was always backed up. It all made me feel very fortunate to be living in Dallas.

Becky,

When SBC bought PacBell, all departments would come together and have ‘best practice’ meetings. In our department, the folks from California came here first. The first things they wanted to know was the average cost of a house and how far did we have to drive to get to work. They were astonished with our numbers and we were blown away by theirs. God Bless Texas!

Native LA resident here. I got out in 1984 and made my way east. I love/hate LA. I've driven down I-5 at 3am where it's been just as crowded as Preston Rd at 5pm. Our home purchased in the 60's for 16,500 is now selling for over 1.2 mil. The same home here is 200,000. Crazy. I went to school in Whittier, Becky. You?

I love California, if there is another State I could live in other than Texas, it would be California. I have relatives and friends out there and I too, am astonished at the housing prices. This poor Texan couldn't afford to live there but I love it just the same!

I do miss the beaches as well and Texas, as much as I love it, pales in comparison to the beaches of Florida and California. But as for me and my house, we will serve Texas!

Calif. has been hi-priced a long time. In 1977, I transfereed from OkCity to Denver in a consolidation. The California people coming in had money to 'burn' in buying the Denver houses and doing the landscapes. We Oklahoma people were scrounging to get into a house the same size as the one we left in Okla. I have visited California two times on business...did not see much...but since I am not a beach person, I would say no way to ever living there...even IF i could afford it. On the other hand, I suppose if one puts up with the traffic and congestion and high prices there for a time, then you reap your rewards when you go eastward. I say all things balance out in the long run. But, that's just my opinion.

...oh, NOW I can't afford the houses in Denver. My son just bought one for $425K, nice, but about like a $300K down here in the Dallas area.

I'm still stuck on seeing the words "$800,000" and "fixer upper" in the same sentence and referring to the same house.

I have worked at Fox4 for the past 16 years. What I like best about investigative reporting is feeling like we are a voice for the community and helping people get issues resolved. We get hundreds of emails every day and while we cannot answer all of them or focus on them for stories, we try to help people or point them in the right direction.
