I got a preview today of the Body Worlds exhibit. It was very interesting, but it is not for the squemish. The fetal development exibit was the most disturbing for me. The exhibit showed the different stages of fetal development using real fetuses.. The area is cordoned off so it is up to you if you want to see it. I could have done without seeing that part, but everything else was very educational. There was also an exhibit where the plastinate, as they are called, was holding his skin. That was a little gross, but really educational at the same time. There are also different exhibits of diseased organs. They show, for example, what a smoker's lung looks like. Here is more on the exhibit..

THE SCIENCE CENTER HAS ALREADY SOLD AN UNPRECEDENTED 25-THOUSAND ADVANCE TICKETS.

BODY WORLDS OPENS FRIDAY IN THE EXPLORADOME... AND RUNS THROUGH MARCH 2ND.

TICKETS ARE 18-DOLLARS FOR ADULTS... AND 12 DOLLARS FOR CHILDREN.

IT'S AN EXHIBIT OF REAL HUMAN CORPSES.. DEHYDRATED THEN INFUSED WITH PLASTIC.

THE SCIENCE CENTER SAYS THE EXHIBIT IS EDUCATIONAL.. BUT ADMITS, IT'S NOT APPROPRIATE FOR CHILDREN UNDER AGE TEN.

AND THE EXHIBIT IS NOT WITHOUT CONTROVERSY.

THE HEAD OF ST. LOUIS CATHOLIC SCHOOLS URGED TEACHERS NOT TO TAKE THEIR STUDENTS TO THE EXHIBIT.

YOUR THOUGHTS...

Great job this morning! I see the exhibit as an educational experience. I am not against going with my 13 yr old son. Maybe seeing this will help him shy away from some of the current teen pressures.

mandm829 I didn't think of it as a deterrent for my teens, but that is a thought. I think that it is an educational esperience. I am allowing my son(8th grade) to go with his class for the field trip. He does have written consent to leave an area if it is too much. I did talk about the fetus part with him. I will be going with my other teens also. I think what does get me is that it is really real, these people were real people not just plastic shells or molds. I will not be taking my elementary children. As for the churches debate. I don't think that there is anything immoral about this exhibit. I plan to donate my body to science when I die and I guess it is up to them to decide how they use it. Knowledge is power...and this is educational.

If my daughter was a little older, I would take her in a heartbeat! She's only 8 and gets a little creeped out by some things, so I don't think she'd do very well seeing it right now.
As for the Church....I don't agree with the ban.

I think its a great learning experience. I don't think that little ones would do great with it, but My son by the time he was 8 could have handled it. I think it depends on the parent as to whether or not their children should see it. As far as the Catholics go what do they agree too?

The same things most other churches take a stand on but they are the biggest so their name gets thrown around the media more. Every church in the area I live in has pro-life signs outside and have organizations pertaining to protecting life, the only one you will ever hear about is the Catholic ones because they involved so many more people.

"The fetal development exibit was the most disturbing for me. "

Kind of puts abortion into perspective, doesn't it?

Then wouldn’t this be a wonderful opportunity to educate teens about sex. If a couple gets pregnant then look what you started. If you do not want this then you need to use a method to prevent getting pregnant. Yes the best method from getting pregnant is abstinence but here are some other ways….

Aside from the pregnancy issue what about the lung from a smoker. Would make stop smoking dead in my tracks. So many wonderful opportunities to show students what happen to the human body if you do this or that.

Even though this is a wonderful opportunity to show students the inner workings of the human body the ticket cost may prevent schools from attending. With most exhibits there is some discount or the fee may even be waved. As of now till Nov. 24 one student can go free for every 10 tickets purchased. I can get by with asking students for up to $10 for a field trip but $18 for the ticket then the price for lunch (on average $7) can be a bit much for many families. Even though the same family can spend more money for a ticket to Six Flags – especially if it is a field trip. Why is it some families just have a hang up about paying for an educational opportunity?

Personally I do not have a problem with the ticket price.

Priorities!!!

Bill Cosby said:

"why is it that a parent will pay 500 dollars for tennis shoes, and won't spend 250 on hooked on Phonics?"

Did you see the Oprah show?

Amen to that one LF.

I'll see it and will take my 10 year old child that has a high affinity for science. I've seen many dying and dead people from my background in healthcare, I have no issue with observing the dead.

They donated their bodies as a teaching tool. I can see many educational aspects of this display. And I don't think that it's 'disrespectful', it's exactly the opposite.

And the science center should give financial dispensation to students and field trips for this exhibit. It not only shouldn't be 18 bucks, it should be free. It shouldn't be about the money with something like this.

Save the big ticket prices to the adult general public.

I usually do not watch the Oprah show. But I respect to the work she has done for so many people over the years.

I agree with the PRIORITIES.

BTW How are things at STLFD?

I agree that an exhibit like this should be available for free to the students and their teachers. But there are many “other” costs with an exhibit like this. I am sure the Science Center had to hire extra Security, help pay for the special transportation costs (much different the transporting a sculpture made out of stone or metal), and insurance costs if something were to actually get damaged.

I can't wait to go see it. I'm glad it's going to be there through March. I'm going to check it out first before I take my kids. I'm an EMT student and it will be such a learning experience to actually see the different body systems instead of looking at them in a textbook.

I think it is an awesome opportunity for everyone.
We heard about it in May, and can't wait to see it.

As for the church, well, they need SOMETHING to complain about. What else would they do?

How many of these people were told that their bodies were going to be on display like this? Were their surviving families consulted? This is going to make people think twice before leaving their body to science. Leaving your body to science is one thing, but to be encapsulated in plastic and put on public display is something else. I think that this is sick and gross and displays how sick and gross this society has become that so many people would want to see this.
