(A quick update on the story below: It's a good thing I checked in on the little guy, because even though West LA Animal Shelter on Pico Blvd. said they would fix his broken leg, when I went in on Monday to check on him their story changed!

In fact, they decided since his leg was broken that he would most likely be euthanized
within the week.

I freaked! As you can imagine. I begged them to hang on while I made some calls.

Fortunately, an amazing organization called " MUCH LOVE" , Terri Vasquez, literally heard his story- hung up the phone and ran over and took him in to her care. I had to agree to foster him when he gets out of the hospital. A task I am more than happy to do!

I will also help "MUCH LOVE" find a good home for Pico when he is completely healed.

Thanks to "MUCH LOVE" Pico had his surgery today and is doing well. He is apparently winning over hearts at the veterinarian's office.

The long and short of it is ...without organizations like www.muchlove.org

perfectly viable pets such as this adorable little bundle of love would die.

If you would like to foster a pet, adopt or donate-please check out their website!

I love "MUCH LOVE" and I hope you will too!

If I could take home another stray dog... you know I would. My luck was pretty amazing the last time I found a dog (now the love of my life) in the street.

Saturday evening my co-anchor, Susan Hirasuna, and I ran out for a quick bite to eat together.

As we pulled in to the restaurant parking lot, I spotted a playful, floppy puppy out of the corner of my eye. But this little guy seemed to be limping.

I kneeled down and he came running over on three legs, looking helpless and adorable. The 2-3 month old jet-black Akita mix was obviously in pain but glad to see us!

We quickly determined he had no tag... and no one was around to claim him!

Because we had to get back to work...we took him to the West Los Angeles Animal Care Center on Pico and Sawtelle. They scanned this beautiful little dog and NO MICRO-CHIP!

If he is someone's pet... a 50 dollar procedure could have prevented him from being lost.

Long story short...there's a beautiful little puppy now at the West Los Angeles Shelter in need of a good home.

Pico the Dog

He has a broken elbow. I checked in on him today. The shelter put him in the splint and they took him to see the veterinarian. I believe they will be doing what they can to fix his elbow soon. But he will be available for adoption in a few days.

This little guy, although in obvious pain, was so sweet and loving. He licked my face as I held him in my arms on the way to the shelter. Even though he was favoring his broken leg, he still tried to play with a toy on the floor.

If you live in a house with a yard, you are a responsible pet owner, and you are looking for a pet.... check out this little guy, I nicknamed "Pico". He will win your heart over....just as he did mine!

Hey all!
Truth be told Amy should get all the credit. I was a little uncertain about putting a stray, possibly flea bitten dog in my car. But Amy AND the dog looked at me with BIG eyes.. and there was no going back.
And, what Amy didn't tell you is the story didn't end with the dog's arrival at the shelter. Amy has actively tried to find the dog's owner... showing people the pup's pic with plans to post more around the neighborhood where we found the dog. Talk about a lucky dog!

Susan, you are definitely a good friend to Amy; I look forward to hearing more about the progress on the dog.

Amy, you are very modest about this situation; keep us informed on the progress. Pico is a good judge of character...I hope you find his owner.

BLCoffman,
I love that you are helping the possum family. Most people don't realize that possum are very beneficial to have in your neighborhood... they are the least likely animal to carry rabies, they eat snails, they kill rats, they clean up the neighborhood of food remnants, they never attack... their defenses are to play dead, they actually pass out, at the sign of danger and sometimes if they really feel threatened they will excrete an ugly green goo from their bottom, to make other animals leave them alone. They are very passive, they might hiss at you, like a cat does... but that is as far as their threats go. They are good animals who deserve more respect than most people give them, thanks for helping that little possum family... I appreciate you for it.

Amy,
You are awesome, every time you help an animal, you acquire a little bigger space in my heart. Thanks for being such a caring soul. Keep being you... because you, being you, is such a blessing to the rest of us.

Samo,
They only "look" mean... that is their best defence. If you want to learn more about Possum go to

They have info on Possum, they are interesting little, so ugly that they are cute, kind of animal. They really do good for a community. Several years ago a LAX Customs Officer told me that when they were building LAX they brought a lot of Possum in to the area to help cut down the rat population during construction. Many of the Possum in that area today are decendants of the LAX Possums.

I wish I could adopt a dog but my landlord doesn't allow them.

Were you Amy Hasten on Cleveland news? If so, I remember when I was 13 and just being obsessed with the news when you did weather reports. Anyways, I'm sure LA weather reports are more enjoyable.

I will try to watch... I would look forward to seeing him on air. I hope he gets a great home. Because of YOU... he has a future... how cool is that!
One of my doggies is currently healing from knee re-construction surgery... I understand the challenges of caring for an injured pup, the head cone and all. Thanks for the up-date... and thanks again for helping him... you are so sweet and caring.

Hi Amy,
You really represent what adopt a pet is all about. I saw the segment today. I only wished that you were there to tell the story about Pico. Is there a reason why your blog about him was not mentioned on air? Also, why did they change his name?
I do have a concern. Jillian mentioned that her actor friend, David Spade, pet peeve with GDLA is that he has a difficult time communicating with the agencies for the adopt a pet segments. For example, no one answers the phone ect. Jillian mentioned that someone needs to look into this. I thought this was kinda odd... Anyhow, what a great story. Please keep us updated on his adoption progress. He is so adorable and what a face!

Amy,
Did you hear that Liz has joined you... in your title of "doggie hero?" She is helping a beagle that she found... she found it in Carson... sound familiar? The beagle was in pretty bad shape, Liz took her to the vet, got her tumors removed, got her spayed, teeth cleaned and x-rays. If you see her, please give her a hug from me.
