As we head into a hot weekend...be sure to lather up with some sunscreen, watch your exposure and drink plenty of water. I'm sure there will be those who won't. They will be easy to spot. Red like a lobster, bold strap tan lines and very sore. Hey..if you don't protect yourself..who will?

Have you noticed that a lot of gas stations which normally sell gas at higher than normal prices are holding the line at $3.99 for regular? I have. Yet, these same stations have no problem asking $4.30 and $4.40 for mid grade and premium. It seems they just can't bring themselves to breach the $4 mark for regular. I know if I see $4 and up for regular, I'll just drive on by..at least...for now. And you know, $3.99 is no bargain. Actually, I've seen several gas stations in the OC selling regular for $3.75..ain't that great!! Just remember, the oil companies, as they tell us, have no choice but to pass along the increased costs. I suppose they also have no choice but to keep raking in record profits!! Pain at the pump!!!

A morning ritual turns tragic for a 87 year old grandmother in Santa Ana. A driver hits her as she's crossing the street before dawn and just drives away with her in the middle of the street. It doesn't seem possible. It's definitely not humane. Did the driver freak out. Maybe. But now's the time to man up or woman up...accept responsibility and turn yourself in. The victim is fighting for her life while her family prays for her recovery. If you're the driver and you're reading this...then you know what to do. If you know who did this...hopefully, you know what to do.

Don't forget..Sunday is Mother's Day. Though, I've always thought EVERY day is mother's day. We should give mom props daily. It's nice to treat her to a meal, lavish her with gifts, cards and flowers on the second Sunday in May, but why not show it year round? She deserves it!! Even if you can't be with mom...I'm sure you can do her proud by remembering her in your own way. C'mon...you wouldn't be here without her!

It's happened again. A pit bull in Lakewood attacks an animal control officer. It was vicious. The officer thought he was going to die...with four other pit bulls in the backyard circling. His injuries are hard to look at and it's hard to believe he survived such an attack. All five dogs were put down after the owner gave the ok. It's sad....sad that had to happen and sad that there seemed to be no other choice than to take the lives of the dogs.

What's with all these coyotes attack on small kids? Thankfully, no one's been killed. The latest incident happened in Lake Arrowhead. A mom dashes in the house and in an instant...a coyote grabs her two year old daughter by the head..and heads for the street. The coyote drops the kid, but not before inflicting some serious puncture wounds. Hey..these coyotes are doing what comes natural. Kids might not know better, which is why you can't let them out of your sight...for a minute!

Two men attacked by a pit bull and a boxer say it was like a scene out of a movie...a never-ending scene. It went on for about 10 minutes. The dogs, on the loose, first attacked a Husky, then knocked down and repeatedly bit the owner, who jumped atop a car and finally attacked another man, shielding his wife, who looked on in horror. Good news...the Husky and both victims will recover. The pit bull and the boxer are in quarantine. Neighbors say they hope the dogs aren't allowed back in their neighborhood. Why these dogs lost it and attacked is anyone's guess. I'm not here to bash pit bulls and boxers. The facts in this case are clear. No one should ever undergo such trauma just out for a walk around the block.

Once again, we give pause this week to reflect upon one of the darkest hours in all of humanity-- the Holocaust. I wonder if younger generations worldwide truly understand what happened. It's a story that is often told, but just how many listen? Until you've had an opportunity to meet and speak with a survivor, it's difficult to get a true sense of EXACTLY what transpired. I would encourage everyone to take some time out of their busy lives this week to attend a remembrance and chat with a survivor or their families. I guarantee, you will never be the same.

It seemed like a scene out of the movie, "Jaws." Officials gather on a bluff overlooking picturesque Solana Beach, to discuss a Great White Shark attack and their plans to deal with it. But this was real. A 66 year old retired vet training as a triathlete is attacked and killed while swimming just off shore. This never happens here...many said and yet, there is this tragic reality. And just think...other swimmers in the water watched as it happened. Officials closed the beach. However, we couldn't find anyone anxious to head out given what happened. It just goes to show that beneath the tranquil waters of the Pacific, there is danger and sometimes it surfaces to let us know.

Have you ever thought about zipping through the Fast Trak toll lanes without paying? Or wondered whether there might be any consequences if your transponder malfunctioned? A longtime Fast Trak customer learned that his device didn't work when he rolled through the toll plaza in his rental car and was subsequently charged $855 in penalties for failing to pay his $5.40 in tolls. He thought the problem was all taken care of, but it wasn't. A couple weeks ago, he received his state tax refund check, but authorities had deducted the $855. What a surprise! He's still fighting to get his money back with a collection agency from New York. As those tax refund checks begin to hit mailboxes, you might want to take a close look to see if you're getting all you should...especially if you failed to pay a toll or authorities believe you tried to pull a fast one.

How are those taxes coming? Don't feel bad, I too have waited until D-Day..or T-Day as the case may be. I try not to think about taxes until I absolutely must...like April 14th. There's gotta be a better way! C'mon, this nation has a lot of smart guys. Why can't we simplify the tax code once and for all. To think that some returns are more than 30 pages is just insane. I feel this way every year and yet, no relief. Perhaps 2009 will be different...yeah...right!

Boy..am I mad! After enjoying a nice meal, I come out to my car and find that someone hit me while pulling in or out of a parking stall. No note..nothing. Just a piece of the plastic wheel fender dangling near the tire, along with a black scrape on my white vehicle that isn't even six months old. For crying out loud! I guess the damage could be a lot worse. But c'mon, how difficult is it to pull in and out of a parking space? I was parked correctly, well within the lines...and wham-o. I know the culprit must've known they hit my car. Maybe they didn't care. Has this happened to you or someone you know. If so, you know the feeling. It's a real pain in the.....

Nobody did it better than Elizabeth Granados. She's the newest cop on the streets of Santa Ana, following her graduation at the top of her academy class out of 38. What a story! She emigrated from Mexico seven years ago, interned at the Santa Ana Police Department, earned two degrees at UC Irvine and became the first female Santa Ana cop to take top honors among recruits. Don't think because she's a woman they cut her any slack. They didn't. There's only one standard for men and women and Elizabeth proved that in a profession dominated by men, that a woman can best them all. In speaking to this engaging and yet humble young woman, you get the feeling she'll be going places fast. Way to go Officer Granados!!

The annual rite of passage for some college students leads them to spring break at Lake Havasu, Arizona. It's a popular place for many students seeking to escape the rigors of classes and let loose. This year though, attendance was down when we visited just after Easter. Why? Not even the authorities could explain, But those students who did venture out onto those crystal blue waters with beautiful scenery around, found a way to party and didn't disappoint. Yes, they jumped off the big rock in Copper Canyon, bared all and had a few cocktails. It never ceases to amaze me when we in television show up with camera and mic in hand at how willing people will tell you EVERYTHING they did in explicit detail. They seem to forget or perhaps, don't care, that those comments and pictures will make the nightly news and that mommy or daddy will cringe at the sight of their darling behaving in a manner they warned them about before they left. Spring Break...you gotta love it!

It would've been one of those tragic stories about how a Santa Ana jeweler lost perhaps thousands of dollars on her way to make a deposit. Instead, two men decided they couldn't just sit by and watch, so they got involved. One, an armed retired Orange County police officer, the other, a shopper on his way out of a drug store. The Good Samaritans followed the two fleeing suspects in their cars and "boxed" the robbers in on the street. Though the suspects escaped, despite the retired officer firing his gun at their car, they didn't elude cops for long. Other witnesses followed the suspects and directed officers to their location, where they were arrested. Everything was recovered and no one was hurt, although the suspects did ram one of the witnesses cars. Some times the good guys do win!
