Physical Education: Making the choice

There will be a lot of people weighing in on this. This is just my 2 cents worth.

When I was a kid (Admittedly, that was a few years ago), every school had a P.E. program and they managed to include the program in days that weren't any longer.

I want to hear what YOU think about the state’s decision to force each school to include a 20 minute physical education period in the schedule.

My thinking: We ran out of time for P.E. when we started requiring all of these stupid state required "qualification" tests that have nothing at all to do with an individual student's education.

All kids need to exercise and workout. 20 minutes A DAY is fine. They say that kids are getting bigger and bigger with obiesety, yet no one is willing to do anything about it. If they do the exercising everyday for the rest of thier lives, they will be lighter in weight by the time they are ready to graduate than if they didn't exercise ever in elementry school. Its embarrassing to have kids across America, as big as a full grown adult. They will have heart and other medical problems in the future. And the sickening thing is, is that no one wants or even thinks to do anything about it because "I'm too busy"... I work my butt off and hardly have time to work out myself but you know what, I make a conscience effort to get in some kind of physical workout EVERYDAY just so I know that I feel better that I got calories off of my body and other harmful toxins. I am on the SLIM FAST plan and working out and within a time span of 11 months straight, I have lost 40+ lbs. My fiance is on the same plan, the same amount of time and he's lost 100+ lbs. Granted, men do loose weight faster than women, but I have gone from a size 16 pant to a size 8 pant! I feel great! Now I just need a tailor who can help me with my weddind dress! Its a 12, I'm in an 8. Good post, AGodthing!

Educating the students to be physically fit should fall right in there with being educationally fit. About the only exercise some students ever get is a workout of the "facial muscles" when griping about not having anything to do or of the thumb muscle when "surfing" the channels.
Don't get me wrong. There are thousands of good kids out there who strive to by physically fit for different athletics. These students do so because they want more in life than becoming another couch potato.
As with anything, some people have to be pushed to excell.

Public (government) schools are used as babysitters. My opinion is MOST of the 'subjects' taught should be done away with. We need reading, writing, history, science, geography, the basics. That would probably get them out of school to go HOME for lunch (and then a job.) Too much school is wasted on junk.
It's NOT up to the government to teach kids to play/exercise, what to eat, how to draw pretty pictures or study hall. What kids need is more time with parents and at paying jobs.

When i was in school (stone age) we had p.e. every day. had to dress in our blue shorts and white tee shirt. our school day was not longer, maybe it was just run more efficiently. IMO the kids need p.e. every day because there are lots of parents out here that will not make sure their kids get off the couch and do something physical

Great comments, gang! I said it before and I'll say it again, we don't always have to agree to have a stimulating conversation, and there really are some people on the Fox blogs who know how to share effectively and intelligently.

P.E. should be for an hour each day. Wow, when I was a kid we loved getting out to play ball. Of course, obesity was not as common then as it is now. Sad, sad state of affairs nowadays.

I think that P.E. is a very important part of a kids day.

We used to start out at 7 a.m. for marching band and then athletics at the end of the day.

P.E. helps these kids with healthy growth and like Scotty said, we used to love getting outside to play ball. We all eagerly awaited recess.

But, there was a difference between recess and P.E.

I say.....bring it back and make it mandatory. =0)

Both of my kids are physically active and are aware of what they eat and how to take care of themselves. But, I also taught them very young how to eat well and it has carried over into their teenage years.

I think PE is important as that is probably the only excercise that many kids get. Get out from behind that damn game controller and go get some fresh air!!

Gone are the days that we'd go run around the neighborhood all day and only come home for dinner. Is that because of all the weirdos and molesters out there that live in all of our neighborhoods? I guess times have changed...that's sad.

Signs of the Apocalypse. Whatever happened to tennis elbow and knee injuries? Seems to me that kids nowadays are more inclined to have injuries like: PS3 wrist, XBox pox and Wii Knee.

You're right Scotty, obesity was not a problem back in the "oldy times" as my son likes to call them. We were out and about all the time, we didn't have play stations to waste our time. We didn't have five milion channels to waste our time. We were'nt afraid to go out, there was nothing out there to be afraid of. That has all changed, hasn't it. I'm an adult now, now when I go out I make sure I take my gun.

The schools are nuts now. They are even stopping how to write cursive. They had rather use the time and money for band, debate, choir, sports, latin club, cheer leading, and hundreds of other crap that are draining the tax payers. I am almost to the age to get my tax exemption. It cant get here fast enough.

Oldrocker37: Oh my gosh! I was just discussing this the other day with my 80 year old mom. We were talking about how for some time now, people have made fun of the old TV show “Leave It to Beaver". The naysayers claim that life was never like that, but I lived it. It was just like you said. We'd run around all over the hood and nobody worried about us. Neighbors don't know each other today, and when we look on the predator sites, we see many ARE our neighbors!

why is school not 8 to 5 like our jobs? if they want to prepare the kids for the world, might as well get them used to work hours, then maybe it would not be so hard to pick up the kids after work, and they could fit in PE and all that other stuff?

This may anger some of you....it is intended to....

but anyway...my girl graduated in 07...from a high school in irving...

she did the required two years of PE in high school....but not one time did they exercise....most of the time they never even went outside....if they did all they did was "walk around, and talk and stuff"....her exact words....

the coaches chatted on cell phones...stared into their laptops...or...get this....NEVER EVEN BOTHERED TO SHOW UP FOR CLASS....

she said it was "no big deal"...."PE is a blow-off anyway dad..."

So I'm taking it that even the schools that DO still have a PE program don't take it very seriously...

ted-mania: Good point. If you will allow one more story from me: When I was in Jr. high, we had a track coach who had the same attitude as those you speak of. He was fired, because back then, P.E. was taken seriously. Children learn from adults--good or bad.

My 4th grader has PE every third day.

When I was in elementary we had it every day, middle school & HS everyday unless you participated in sports. of course, back then they didn't teach down to government mandated minimum intelligence tests...they actually taught sometimes.

Kids need PE. They spend all their time on cell phones, playstations, xboxes, computers, watching TV, etc. On top of that parents aren't feedng their children well balanced, nutritious meals. People are so busy that fast food is a common staple in many households. Those are the two major reasons why kids are so obese today.

Schools need to have PE and it should be enforced so it is not just goof off time.

When I was growing up people didn't have the computers, cell phones and video games. We played outside and rode our bikes. My mother cooked nutritious meals and we sat down to eat dinner and talked. No TV was on. I was involved with the track team, the swim team and gymnastics.

The schools also need to have better lunch choices.

Only the people that have kids in public school should have to pay school taxes.
