AGodthing's Blog

I really didn't intend to blog about the broadcast circus, but since we seem to be leaning that way...

It had snowed a typical four feet in Denver, and the plows were due to be busy an hour after I had to report to work. and as is the economic case with radio types, I was driving a less-than-showroom vehicle. The clock strikes 4:30am and through the drifts I plow. about halfway to work, I high-end a drift and become as wedged as Pooh Bear in Rabbit's hole. Stuck. Immovable.

There were no options other than to start leaping through the drifts, as fast as I could leap. Literally over the river and through the woods, hoping I would make it there by 5:30AM.

When one is faced with living on the edge of poverty, it's truly amazing what the prospects of being late for work can do for one's motivation. So I had made it, in spite of the odds. On time. A true champion of the industry! Except that due to the frigid temperatures and the sudden transformation from out-of-shape producer to human snowplow, I found myself completely unable to speak. And it wasn't TV. I couldn't wave my hands to communicate. Management sent me home later, anyway. They had no idea that  it would  shortly develop into full bore pneumonia.

Sure brings back a LOT of not-so-fond memories, AG!

On several occasions I did pretty much the exact same thing, attempting to get my "poor man's used car" to the station on time. I was always out ahead of the snowplows and the last half-mile of my trip was almost straight uphill. I plodded through knee-deep snow MANY times.

Thankfully, the police knew my car and the local wrecker operator's would tow it up the station's parking lot, so the plows could do their job. I don't think one of them ever charged me for the towing.

Kowboy: My father-in-law would sometimes plow a path with the blade on the front of his jeep, from home to the station. Makes today's rain seem like nothing at all.

Yup, Yup! While this rain seems like a mess (and it's certainly NOT pretty when it all comes down at once and washes away), there's nothing like a ten below zero morning, wallowing in snow that's arse deep on a ten foot indian, trying to get to work so you can warn all of the motorists to STAY HOME. LOLOLOL

I'm about as involved as one can be in my community. I live suburban life through the families I minister to.I endured 27 years as a broadcaster, and in that time I learned to appreciate the power one can have in the newsroom. I have also seen that power abused. ...So I blog!
